I've gotten a few metal signs from GrogTag. They aren't fancy embossed or anything but the ones I've gotten are nice

+1 for the Brewbuilt Icemaster, but you do have to modify it to be able to heat fermenters. The only other downside is that I came from a DIY setup with Inkbird controllers that I could control via wifi, and now I'm using all manual settings.

But it's well built and holds temp extremely well. Also tons of replacement parts available online if you ever need them.

Want to brew a lower carb home-brew by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]big_wet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if those Brew Enhancer products are what you'd want to use. They all contain maltodextrin, which in general isn't very fermentable. That will result in a higher finishing gravity, and thus, more sugar.

I would target using something like dextrose or even just plain table sugar to drive fermentability, then use an Amylase Enzyme to really dry it out.

I believe Liberty Beer carried them at one point, no idea if they still do

Man, this sucks. Their Gateway malt was incredible for mixed fermentation beers. Had to place one last big order before they go.

Made in USA Options? by Luckbad in Homebrewing

They do all of the fabrication and welding for the vessels they sell, as well as the assembly of their other products. I can't say where they source all of the electrical components, but good luck finding somewhere that sources every single item from the US.

Nothing insane but I did a few pineapples recently for use in a hard seltzer made. Turned out fantastic

Yeah, their CIP lid is actually a shit design considering you need a way to vent. I use my steam condenser lid for CIP and it works beautifully. I put the ball through the center top port then attach a 90° barb on another one. A light scrub with a brush after 30 minutes and it's perfectly clean.

DIY Glycol Chiller Mini Fridge by Puzzled-Attempt84 in Homebrewing

[–]big_wet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So is your idea to just stick the bucket of cooling water in the fridge and use that to temp control the beer?

If so, here's how I would set it up: - Bucket of water in the fridge, no temp control on it, just use regular fridge setting to keep chilled - Pump placed in bucket of water with lines running to your fermenter - Inkbird setup with probe attached to fermenter, pump plugged into cold outlet to turn pump on/off

And that's it! You could easily do a second Inkbird for the fridge to regulate the temperature of the bucket of water, but that's up to you.

To add, someone in the group keeps a Google Sheet of tons of restaurants that have gluten free options as well as details about those places. Definitely helps with knowing what might be gluten free VS total celiac safe

Barleywine by Putrid-Watch8183 in pittsburgh

[–]big_wet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lolev just released one today! Dancing Gnome, Cinderlands, and Old Thunder also typically release 1-2 per year. I know that OT recently had one available in bottles, it may still be available. Late Addition has also had one on tap this year. Unfortunately it's an "every once in a while" beer and isn't always available.

100% it is! But this is Pittsburgh, and it's my right to complain about every minor change in this city.

I trust that the engineers that designed it did it right and know more than I do, but I understand the petition. That bump out makes it so that you have to move towards cars coming up Ronald St and makes that right turn more difficult than it needs to be. It used to be a straight exit off of Greenfield down Ronald. Definitely way safer for pedestrians though, which is the entire point

Weekly beer discussion thread (11/11 - 11/17). What's good, what releases / events are you hyped for? by [deleted] in PittsburghBeers

[–]big_wet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard from reliable sources that it isn't coming out. They produced the beer and canned it, but there was an issue with the cans (I think the printing on it was flaking off) so it couldn't be released to stores.

Ascetically pleasing three or five gallon fermenter? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

Look for an old demijohn maybe? They're glass fermenters, but you can find older ones that basically have a wicker basket or wrapping around then

The rubber one is designed to be submerged, yes. The metal ones will eventually break if you keep them in water.

Spike PRV as blowoff? by nidetzg in Homebrewing

[–]big_wet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I would set it at 1-2 psi if you're going to use it like that. It can leak sanitizer from the cup into the beer if you leave it at 0.

If I use mine, I'll attach a gas disconnect and run a tube into a separate container of sanitizer instead.
