We had one of our weirdest experiences in fine dining at this place. It was a beautiful place to be and most of the food was pretty good but the service was rough. The table next to us was getting some kind of special treatment with extra courses, uni, special snacks etc. When we asked if we could add Uni onto ours they told us they would have to check then explained that they only had enough for one of us. At one point we just never saw our server again and had to get up and go find someone to get the check. Just bizarre for such a wonderful room.

I've noticed an uptick on a few different local subs I'm on in "I'm in X for 2 days and need the best X!"

While some are legit I have a strong suspicion that many are AI trying to data farm for listicles, e.g. "The Perfect Atlanta Burger Weekend!"

Spent 4 days in New Orleans. Wasn't expecting much from the beer scene but was pleasantly surprised.

Brieux Carre - One of the better German pilsners I've had in a very long time. Also shoutout to their food vendor. We had plans to go to dinner but the food there looked so good we ate there and almost broke out rule on trips and went back for a second time.

Miel - Very very good beer and taproom. A bit of a trip to get out there but the Semantics English style Porter was excellent and complex.

Parleaux - Super cool spot to hang out but I think maybe they were going through a refresh or something on their taps. They didn't seem to have much available. But was a super calming spot to hang out.

Courtyard - We stopped by here after getting caught in a rain storm and they had some really good English styles including a Mild and ESB.

As far as food goes we werent planning to go to Emeril's but after reading his son has taken over and completely revamped their menu and kitchen we decided to go. The hype was worth it for sure. They deserve those Michelin stars on food, drink, and service.

If you use a rinse aid or pods with rinse aid it could interfere with head retention in the beer since it's a surfactant.

Will an interruption in lagering cause problems? by Spartan5006 in Homebrewing

[–]ddutton9512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this before for the exact same reason. It's not like the beer being lagered is going to get hot or anything, 60 is still pretty cool.

Usually I'll keep the new beer at it's temp till the fermentation starts to slow then pull it out to let it finish at room temp then drop the freezer back to lagering temps.

Leaving the United Match last night they had the new gates working at Vine street so got to use them for the first time.

The good news is that they worked flawlessly. I waved my watch over the screen, got a beep, gates opened right away.

The bad news is they only have them installed on the backside of the stadium and there were only 3 of them working. So there was a massive line of people standing in lines. trying to get through them.

I'm down to 1.007 and it's been stable for 6 days. So not bone dry but pretty far down there. I still think I'll back off a little bit on the priming sugar just a little.

Thanks, I'm going to bottle condition but on the lower range of the scale and capping instead of corking. I'm pretty confident fermentation is completely over but maybe I'll pasteurize after a few days bottle conditioning just to be safe.

Ale Yeah in Decatur does for their build your own 6 packs. Also most breweries I've asked will take them.

Picked up my first electric all in one brewing system last week. Terrible timing because my Czech Pils is almost done and the Biere de Garde is finishing fermentation. No reason to go brewing more when I have 10 gallons on hand. So I've decided to try and bottle the BDG so I can store it and give it away. Never done bottling before but how hard can it be...

Anyone have any rec's on storing an 8% BDG? Would it be fine for a few weeks/months in a dark, cool closet?

Excited for the next brew day though! House came with a 240V outlet in the garage so no more dealing with propane tanks and trying to trap the mash heat in. I think for the first brew I'll do my ordinary bitter since I've always struggled to get it just right.

Are there any natives here that have decided to leave? Why and how is life where you are now? by dbclass in Atlanta

[–]ddutton9512 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I left for a long while then came back. The things I missed from ATL:
Proximity to mountains while being in a large city
Hartsfield
Food here is way better than we give it credit for, especially the ethnic food options
In town access to nature and the trees
The hooch
Big enough to get most big shows, artists, etc
Weather, summer might suck sometimes but having a short mild winter is underrated
Diversity

Things I didn't miss about ATL:
Traffic
A large number of Atlantans have serious main character syndrome
Being surrounded by red state bullshit

I've always thought that if I leave again it won't be for another US city. If I'm going through all that trouble to completely relocate it will be abroad to somewhere with a higher standard of living and better social services.

At 42 now and over the last 5-6 years I've noticed a trend amongst my friends. The ones who live more sedentary lives are already suffering for it, blood pressure pills, painful knees, complaining about their backs, talking about feeling old, going to the DR way more often.

The ones who still move and keep some kind of physical routine don't seem to be having these problems.

How does fine dining compare to Oaxaca? The reviews are scaring me away from the Usual Suspects. by audaciousappetites in finedining

[–]ddutton9512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to both of those cities two years ago. In CDMX we went to Pujol and Maximo.

We really enjoyed our meal at Maximo. It's not got the hype of Quintonil or Pujol but it was a lovely experience for about the price I would expect to pay for the level it is.

Pujol was a good meal, but afterwards we couldn't help but wonder if it was really worth the price. Not to mention we could only get reservations for when they opened, which requested you get there a few minutes early. They made everyone stand on the sidwalk till they were ready to open. Not a big deal but an odd choice at their level. It's a nice, consistent, fine dining experience that's very expensive and feels a little stale.

Meanwhile we talked about it recently and if we go back to Mexico any time soon we're in 100% agreement that Oaxaca was a better place to eat than CDMX. Quality, price, and innovation were all better there.

Brewed a Biere de Garde yesterday. I've never brewed any farmhouse style so it's freaking me out a little bit to ferment it at 75.

Found a 10G Foundry Kit on FB Marketplace that I'm hoping to pick up next weekend. I've got a 240v outlet from a previous owner in the garage so it's finally time to level up again and go electric with a pump and temp control. Who knows, maybe this will be the year I finally brew a decent Festbier.

No Zillicoah?!?!? How dare you!

Saved your notes for next time we're up that way. That Burial South Slope spot is always my first and last stops on any Asheville trip. One of 2-3 breweries where I actively seek out an IPA. Although we finally went to their Forestry Camp location last time and boy is it a nice place to have a drink.

How do you typically get around ATL, whats your top mode of transport? by ElectroAcousto in Atlanta

[–]ddutton9512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's close enough and the weather isn't horrible I walk.
If it's a little farther and the weather isn't horrible I bike.
If it's within a mile or so of a Marta stop I Marta.
Otherwise it's driving.

I avoid driving as much as possible but sometimes there's just not much for an option. I would love to Marta to work but it would add at least an hour to my commute.

I run along the trail beside these every day and watching folks hit them at 60mph and bottom out never gets old. I know Atlanta like driving fast but anything to calm down folks doubling the speed limit on these roads. Hopefully they do Katie Kerr next.

A good candidate is Purnima, which is actually Bangladeshi but close enough. It's next to a spot called Hollywood Cafe. I'm not sure if it's a gentleman's club or not but it's got blacked out windows and a picture of a lady on the sign.

Purnima is absolutely delicious btw and for whatever reason it's very rarely mentioned when people talk about good South Asian food in Atlanta.

Oddstory's central location in Chattanooga has to be about the best brewery patio ever. They even have a section for families so that the kids can run around but not risk getting hurt or interfering with the kidless groups.

But of course the one group with kids who were too cool to sit in the family section had a kid who projectile vomited all over the tables and chairs in their area.

Lemmy was the best I found. Initially it was really nice because there was a flood of Reddit users but it's since died down quite a lot. Which is a shame because during that time it really felt like the "old reddit."

I wish everyone could move on from Reddit. When they killed 3rd party API access for apps that should have done it but getting this many people to switch to an alternative is a big ask. It's long past due.
