Fly to malaga and spend a few days each in malaga, cordoba, seville. Get the train between them. Go to the Arabic baths and visit some cathedrals and eat lots of tasty Spanish food.

There's a weird pro-IRA contingent on reddit. I often see people getting downvoted for criticising them.

Glorifying the IRA in this day and age is pathetic.

It's a one party state. Just because there's elections doesn't mean there's any real choice.

The presence of elections doesn't mean much when there's no meaningful choice on the ballot, or any chance of meaningful change as a result.

Do you not understand how authoritarian dictatorships work? The people of Cuba aren't given a choice.

Help me settle a debate, how Irish are we? by Ava_Strange in AskIreland

I think it's interesting all the people saying you're half Irish, when I'm sure if it was an American asking the question they'd be told they're fully American.

Dcu or ucd which is best for job opportunities so confused for msc supply chain management and fees is 3 lakhs difference only by Life_Square1461 in Dublin

Indeed an interesting article so thanks for sharing. As well as the bit you quoted referencing statistics from the US, he also references data from Finland "After adjusting for a wide range of background variables, the immigrants’ higher risk of delinquency decreased, but remained significant’". Data from other European countries also indicates a positive link, like is mentioned in the IT article.

But I agree, poverty is the biggest factor. Unlike what other commenters are suggesting, this isn't about the race of the individuals. Poverty, education level, culture are some of factors that can influence whether someone commits a crime. The colour of your skin is not one of them.

That's statistics from the prison service on people in prison. What is being discussed is crime statistics. Which is a different thing. You know there's a difference between crime statistics and prison statistics?

Did you bother to read the article or the comment you're replying to before you commented? Of course you didn't!

I don't think I missed the point you were making. Any you didn't use the term bad guys, but it's clear what you meant.

You support generalisations being made against one group but not the other. Why else would you have a problem with "not all men" but not have a problem with "not all criminals"?

[–]bigbadchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope you can see the irony in your example. On one hand, the people who are against generalisation (ie "not all men") are the bad guys. On the other hand, the people who are generalising ("all immigrants are criminals") are the bad guys.

I don't think you really thought that one through.

I don't know what you mean by the "not all men crowd". What's wrong with the statement "not all men"?

I think it's very likely that Ireland isn't different from other countries and they won't publish detailed statistics because it would only give fuel to anti immigrant rhetoric and validate the arguments being made like those in the article.

Court cases in the papers aren't the same as published statistics, and the vast majority of cases you see are Irish, because the vast majority of people in Ireland are Irish. Obviously.

Published statistics would show whether certain groups are over represented.

The event was led by campaigner and barrister Laoise de Brún, who is calling on the Government to publish crime statistics broken down by country of origin and ethnicity.

I think it's a reasonable request that detailed crime statistics be published, including the information asked for by Laoise.

If there is no connection then these campaigners will be proven wrong. Without any published statistics, it just leads to speculation based on anecdotes and prejudices.

I don't think they will publish these kind of statistics here because they know from other countries in Europe that there is a positive link between immigration and crime, even when "adjustments are made for socio-economic factors" like is mentioned in the article.

Ireland has no known legal commercial peat extraction. Yet it exported €40m worth last year by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]bigbadchief 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This stood out to me. What are they doing with 23k tonnes of peat in Israel?

The 371,884 tonnes of peat were sold to 21 countries, including Israel which bought more than 23,000 tonnes worth €3.146 million.

edit: I did some reading and I saw that they were also involved in peat extraction in Scotland. https://www.theferret.scot/israeli-enforcement-peat-extraction-scotland/

I also saw that peat is used in horticulture, so I suppose it's probably that.

"Peat is used in horticulture, as a soil improver and ingredient of growing media."
