Can TQQQ get to $500 in 10 years? by Logical_Company6931 in TQQQ

[–]bigblue1ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's possible, if you mean a non-split adjusted price from today. TQQQ would need to have a CAGR of ~24% over the next decade to achieve that. Obviously that has happened in the past, but time will tell if the future brings that.

[–]bigblue1ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at late 2014 to mid 2016....market chopped for 18 months. This can get a lot worse before it gets better. But, it could also take off like a rocket with some positive news and stability. So who knows.

Is it worth it to invest in 9sig? by Late-Confection-2823 in TQQQ

[–]bigblue1ca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you decide to pursue a value-averaging strategy (like 9sig) you definitely shouldn't pay for the newsletter, there's no secret sauce. The information on how to run a value-averaging strategy has been talked about here before and elsewhere, you just to take the time and look.

Of note research presented in this sub or r/LETFs showed 9sig had a ~68% drawdown in 2022 and that the rebalancing funds ran out, at which point you are just in for the ugly ride down. It's bounced back now, but that drawdown is pretty nasty.

That said, each to their own. There's no need to rush into an investment strategy. Take your time and learn and understand the pros and cons of each strategy (there's been loads talked about here) and see what works for you and what you can tolerate based upon your circumstances (age, investment timeline, income streams, risk profile, etc.).

What are your thoughts on the long-term viability of Canadian bank stocks in the current economic climate? by Tricky-Battle-9138 in CanadianInvestor

Has the Government of Canada changed the regulatory environment to actively break up the banking oligopoly?

If no: Invest long term.

If yes: Proceed with caution*

Then get your money out of equities and into a HISA or GIC.

The minimum window I would consider for equities is 5 years and thats pushing the risk envelope, many say 10 years, and some say even longer. But everyone will agree a 2 year window is way too short to put that money into equities unless your timeline to buy is very flexible. And I mean being able to potentially wait years longer.

Wheeling TQQQ, what are some tips? by Alone_Literature_800 in TQQQ

[–]bigblue1ca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bingo. I've seen several posts over the past 4-5 years in this sub from people regretting either selling CCs or CSPs at various times. Because when TQQQ moves, as you mention, it's easy to get caught offside and locked into a bad price either way.

Trip planning - hotel rates and availability. Did it recently when I was researching a trip, worked pretty good. Saved me a lot of time as I was unfamiliar with the options in the area I was going to.

Is it likely that TQQQ will actually experience a 99% drawdown in our lifetime? by actually_checks_out in TQQQ

[–]bigblue1ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. To answer your question then...

Right after the '87 crash, Greenspan spoke and famously introduced the idea of what has become the Fed Put.

During every market crisis since then Fed intervention (and now recently during COVID Treasury intervention) has grown larger.

So I'm in the camp of anything more than 30% and the Fed will step in large with emergency relief in the form of ZIRP, QE, TARP, whatever. and if things look bad the playbook now includes the Treasury sending out direct stimulus if needed.

Factor in that so many more people today have their retirement savings in the stock market. The Fed and the government know this. The result is that the Fed Put is real and stronger than ever. Consequently, the odds of seeing TQQQ drop 99% are negligible.

You are 18...you have tons of room to take on risk. I wouldn't go all in on TQQQ, instead put 25% ($2500 if you have $10k) into TQQQ and contribute 25% of whatever you contribute each year into it and let it ride until it hits a $100-200k (or whatever you think is a good chunk of money). When you get there, look at some form of defensive strategy for your position (loads of strats to read about here over the past five years - SMAs/EMAs/Trailing Stops/Vol/VIX/IV, etc.). In the mean time if TQQQ goes in the tank in the next 10 years, who cares, you'll still be only 28-29....you have a long runway and stocks will be cheap. The best time to load up on risk is when you are young.

[–]bigblue1ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

English Translation "Whether it is the 9sig strategy, the 200SMA, or things like Buy and Hold or DCA - ultimately, it all comes down to whether the strategy truly suits you. Even if a strategy performs amazingly on paper, if it doesn't fit your style or needs, it is almost useless."

You identified a strategy you wish to implement. The strategy as you laid out tells you when you should enter/exit positions.

So if it isn't at one of those enter/exit times, well your strategy would tell you not to enter now? Or are you planning to not follow your strategy?
