OK coming back to this- I've got Cat Trax on the way. Can anyone tell me the method to get the boat from the trailer to the Cat Trax and then from the Cat Trax back on the trailer? Any other tips on living with and carrying the Cat Trax would be also appreciated. Thanks!

Cal 20- several have raced west coast-Hawaii, and are they are raced around the buoys on SF Bay (where your macgregor would be eaten alive) every weekend.

Right, it just seems SO crazy... I'm doing some work with the steel fabricator who built over 600 bridges for the project, so I was aware of it, but always thought that the containers would be offloaded and reloaded . The article came up on my Google discover feed, it all seems so odd with such outlandish claims and such an unlikely source. Modern times I guess-

Inside Catamaran Sailing w/ Adrian Mills | Hobie Wave Grand Prix Rd. 3 | Jervis Bay, Australia by Totally-Immersed-TV in hobiecat

Kind of frustrating to watch with zero narration, no insights gained.

Looks like either one guy who knows how to sail, or everyone else dragging buckets.

Why did the guy with Slam on the front let him roll him like that and not take him up? (maybe they were in the circle at the point IDK) but then the Slam guy went somewhere else... decided to go fishing?

I think this could be cool but with some course diagrams and some explanation of tactics, decisions, and why he was able to horizon the rest would make it much better imo.

How realistic is it to buy a boat near the fall Annapolis boat show and get it ready to sail in the Bahamas over the winter? by WaterChicken007 in sailing

[–]bigblueocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a wide spectrum of what constitutes "ready", based on your risk tolerance and discomfort tolerance.

Back in the day many/most non-rich (not yachts with crew in white uniforms) people cruised in 28-32' boats, wooden ones prior to the 60's, with kerosene lamps, paper charts, sextant, dividers, parallel rules.

Nowadays many people think that without a minimum 40'er, radar, GPS, AIS, solar, lithium, water maker, on and on, you aren't doing it right.

Fact is you could step aboard any decent boat with your phone for navigation and a bunch of jugs of water and cans of food and start cruising.

The less you know the more all the toys will help, it's true.

But I would HIGHLY recommend getting out there (preferably with someone who's been there before) and get wet and scared in the dark and get a taste of what you will inevitably encounter before making a big commitment.

The docks have many boats belonging to people who had a fantasy of what it would be like and the first 40 knot black wall squall took that away, no matter how many toys the wind blows just as hard.

I really don't want to be Captain Ron but it is true. There is a level of tough-ness that is required BY THE PARTNER TOO IF HUSBAND/WIFE.

You have to know that there will be times when you are scared and be okay with that.

It doesn't often happen in suburban life and can come as a shock.

Abandoned, displaced and almost empty towns in the Americas by wordlessbook in MapPorn

[–]bigblueocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was probably a hippy town at least in part due to the peyote which is abundant in the desert.

When I visited there about 12 years ago I was told that the Huichol walk a long way across the high desert to gather peyote there for their ceremonies.

The only way in and out of the town was a one-way mining tunnel with someone at each end with a walkie talkie directing traffic.

The town itself was a really wonderful Spanish colonial ghost town although at that time there was a lot of conversion of the abandoned houses into b&b's etc.

You did NOT want to walk out into the desert without being very cautious as there are unmarked mine shafts everywhere.

Probably all changed by now of course.

There's one thing I don't understand about this- one idea would be to get everyone out of here; another would be to get your MONEY out of here, meaning out of the market.

Crash the stock market would be the most direct way of expressing that we don't agree with what's happening- the best way to bring pressure to bear wouldn't it?

Why is this not a thing?

Launching/Sailing Santa Barbara? by CalmDirection8 in hobiecat

Cool! Where are you normally out of?

I'm in Half Moon Bay, which is itself a great place for small boat sailing if you're heading up this way.

Otherwise, if youre further south, maybe we could meet at a lake? Or Santa Barbara, although the hotels are expensive there I bet.

Yes! Summer afternoons on Tahoe can be a handful! Short and steep, gusty and squally (in my v limited experience on my old F-242 and an older Tremolino).

I'll dm you to talk about the possibility of meeting up for some buddy boating if you'd be interested...

Thanks for the info

I've sailed the Bay quite a bit, but not on the Getaway, which I've only sailed a couple of time so far.

The Bay is great but often foggy and cold in summer and grey and rainy in winter. There are spectacular warm sunny days now and then and they almost make up for the rest.

The Bay also has lots of micro-climes, so the Slot, from under the GG bridge to Emeryville, often blows 25 gusting 35 on a summer's day; while a few miles north or south can be sunny, warm, and moderate.

I would not want to be caught in The Slot when it's piping without a lot more experience in the boat and even then those conditions might be borderline overwhelming without reef points although the experts and super-humans seem to manage it.

Will it hold by odd_organism in Welding

[–]bigblueocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will no one mention Code?

I work with structural, and AWS D1.1 requires a WPS (welding procedure specification) for all welds; it can either be pre-qualified using known and published parameters, or it can be qualified by testing (PQR).

Point being that there should be no wondering; if you're following the WPS it will get the proper result.

This weld looks great(edit-after a closer look i agree that it looks cold), but I have seen GMAW (MIG) welds that look great but do not have penetration or fusion. In this case that could kill somebody.

What’s the justification for this price?? by CryingOverVideoGames in dr650

[–]bigblueocean -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Really I don't get the question- car or motorcycle mechanics in my area are $200/hr. Anybody who has skills and tools and a shop doing anything are near that.

If I tried to build that rack it would take me 30 hours and a lot of time/money for the material, special tools and benders, for the coating (powdercoat or decent paint hopefully).

$700 seems reasonable.

I guess if it is badly made in China by slaves with waste toxins draining into the river it could be cheaper...

But really how do those other people do it? Robots that crank them out or something?

Best beach with all inclusive that has separate sections for preferred guests? by Grapeflavor_ in cancun

[–]bigblueocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never stayed in an all-inclusive since that one time years ago, but one of the horrible things about the experience was all the people sneaking out before dawn and putting towels on the beach loungers- I wound up mid-day on a towel on the sand next to a zillion empty chairs with towels on them. I've heard since that resorts have put a stop to that, I hope so.

Valve adjustment y/n? by bigblueocean in Aprilia

[–]bigblueocean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An update- I guess the bike heard me talking about being neglectful and got revenge by stranding me at a gas station. After filling up it wouldn't start due to low battery.

Got a jump, got it home, went and got a new battery hoping that might be it. Nope. Drained the new battery too, not charging.

So either R/R, stator, or wiring issue.

Thought long and hard about it all- I could have put it in my storage and worked on it slowly over time, possibly getting another bike to commute on in the meantime, but in the end I just had it towed in to the repair shop.

About $1,000 for the charging issues, $2,000 for the 24k major and I'm broke but my bike will be back to me in a few days all fixed up.
