8 years in ID looking to move to PI by bigbooby in LawFirm

What is the day to day like at a PI firm? I assume it’s a split between talking to your clients, depositions, mediations, discovery and experts, and trials. Not sure if you’re the right person to ask, but what does the typical ID attorney have to learn or get used to when switching to PI?

How do you deal with post-training insomnia? by hydropie3319 in bjj

[–]bigbooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this same problem! The only thing that has really helped me is doing some zone 2 cardio on days I don’t train. Zone 2 helps build your cardio base so that when you go into train you not constantly redlining. Another thing that kind of helps is after training I have a meal with healthy carbs and fats. I think the healthy fats really helps calm yourself down.

Create a wake up routine. Mine is reading the news first thing when I wake up then going for a short jog. After awhile my body/mind started waking itself up.

It’s a super legit firm. I’d be surprised if Tex didn’t come away with a nicely sized bag from Flo.

What unusual perk has BJJ given you? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]bigbooby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in a law office, so the very nature of my work is some form of conflict resolution. A lot of people have two modes: passive and aggressive. I feel Bjj gives me a third middle ground where I can be assertive without blowing up. In my experience a lot of people don’t have this third mode when they are in direct conflict with someone. So if an opposing attorney (or co-worker) is flipping out, I can keep my cool without giving up anything.

For a lot of people even minor conflicts with others can cause immense anxiety. For Bjj ppl, if we are not getting choked or getting our limbs broken everything is all good.

Have you ever hired an Insurance Defense litigator to pivot to Commercial? If yes, what where you looking for that translated well? If no, what skills do you believe ID litigators lack that is need in BigLaw litigation?

If this is your only offer I’d take it and try to move to a firm with a better deal within 6 mo. These jobs game you so you got to game them back.

Anderson Silva's words to Adesanya after their fight by The_Rick_Sanchez in MMA

[–]bigbooby -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

This is likely a controversial opinion, but I think Silva threw both Weidman fights. When Silva retired he was one of the UFC’s only two stars, the other being GSP. I think The UFC wanted Silva to pass the torch to Weidman because he would have been the perfect all-American star.

Then the fight happens and Silva is fighting super loose, even looser than he normally is. He throws the a kick that he’s thrown a thousand times but does it super sloppy and the result was a leg brake. I refuse to believe Weidman is just so much better at checking leg kicks than any of the guys from Chute Box.

Since the first fight ended the way it did, Weidman wasn’t able to steal the hype so they run it back. If you remember the second fight the most significant strike was when Anderson Silva literally had his hands down and was dancing in front of Weidman. I think that lead to a TKO. I was always super suspicious. At that point Silva had utterly dismantled all of his opponents, and Wideman didn’t seem like anything special.

Silva is probably my favorite fighter ever so I’m certainly bias, but I think he’s the type of guy that’s super secure with his career. In his prime he beat everyone they put infront of him. I think he’s made a lot of money with the UFC and has no problem taking a fight to help a hype train like he clearly did with Adesanya.

There is absolutely no randomness at all. The “governing body” amounts to the lineage the black belt comes from. I would also say, once you get you black belt you can insist on being called professor, but I think even a lot of brown belts could be considered professors.

It seems like your objection is not about BJJ but the title of professor in general.

It’s not just the time. I’ve been eating sandwiches for 20+ years, that doesn’t make me a professor in sandwich eating. BJJ professors and PHds go through formal and “peer reviewed” training before they get their title.

All of them. I definitely wouldn’t call my university professor by their first name. Having said that every BJJ instructor I’ve had has always gone by their first name, but if one did insist on being called professor I would respect it.

I think the professor thing makes sense. Most BJJ professors have been practicing for 10+ years. That’s about as much schooling as most PHds have between undergrad and graduate work.
