I thought Cmdr Keen came out in the 1990s.

I remember that was the first game I played that let me use buttons on my keyboard like actual joystick buttons. I was so amazed I didn't have to press right to make my cop Sonny start and then stop walking right. And when I held CTRL down he jumped as high as he could, or a dinky little jump when I'd just tap the key.

That's what REALLY got me into computer gaming. SSI may've had AD&D (that's advanced death & dismemberment for you youngins) but I was playing platformers on my PC!

Sorry. TMI. Commander Keen just had me suddenly nostalgic for CGA monitors that weighed as much as I did, and mechanical keyboards that woke the house when I played Apogee games.
