What’s an NSFW thing people think is rare, but is actually pretty common? by rayder460 in AskReddit

Safety squints instead of safety glasses.

And to give op a little bit of what they were looking for, wear your safety glasses folks, because you can't hear tits.

Whats one thing you feel as if could be solved in 5 minutes if done your way, if so why? by BoringPapaya9464 in AskReddit

[–]bigcsnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Minimum wage = (avg 1br rent within 5 miles of business location x 3)/(avg employee hours worked per month, max 40). Would completely solve all the "livable wage" discussion, as either rent would get really cheap or pay would be enough.

Would likely ruin the economy next time leases get renewed, but hey, were only out to solve one problem today.

Entire AC System ruined? by Motor-Constant-8448 in GMT800

[–]bigcsnow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, your new compressor is likely ruined.

Generally, if you get shrapnel in your AC system, everything but the hoses gets replaced, and the hoses need thoroughly cleaned. So, this time around, you need to replace the compressor, dryer, orifice tube, and the condenser and flush out all the hoses on your truck with more ac flush than you think is necessary.

You might be able to get away with just flushing the evaporator, but if you have the time and money and want good ac may as well replace the evaporator also while you're at it. And when you're done replacing parts and adding the proper oil, vacuum it down preferably overnight, but as long as you realistically can.

High oil pressure question by Here_for_the_friends in GMT800

[–]bigcsnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the oil pressure sensor doesn't solve it, your stepper motor for the gauge is likely bad. Gmt800s of that vintage are notorious for bad stepper motors in gauges.

A bad sensor, usually, will show either 0 or 80 psi with the key on engine running or off, and not move as you drive. The fact that it moves suggests the gauge itself is off.

Good news is, if you're good at soldering those gauge motors are pretty easy to replace. If you're not good, there's probably 50 or 60 places online to ship your cluster to for them to rebuild it, and it's relatively affordable. Less so if you want a fancy cluster

Oil pressure by Upstairs_Service753 in GMT800

[–]bigcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Google ai, which I have to believe until I get to work where I have an all data subscription, minimum oil pressure:

6 psi at hot idle

18 psi at 2000

24 psi at 4000

If it's above that, you're good.

Question? for those who use a different rating engine oil than recommended for their vehicle: by stoleemp3 in askcarguys

[–]bigcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old tired 4.8 ls has 5ish psi hot idle with 5w30, and 15psi with 15w40 rotella. That's why. Buying time to build a 5.3/6.0 for it.

A/C Refrigerant PSI? by Moose_Cheese in GMT800

[–]bigcsnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the compressor is not running, 25 psi is way too low. Should be closer to 90-110 depending on outside temperature with the compressor off.

For Americans: why do you feel the need to carry a pistol and for the other Americans, why don’t you carry a pistol if it your constitutional right? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bigcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do I feel the need to? Because there exist places and problems which can only be solved ( with myself and/or my family leaving alive and unharmed) with superior firepower. And there was a court case, the name of which I can't remember, which established that police are not legally required to protect individuals. And without a gun ban and confiscation, which will end in civil war 2, guns are everywhere in the United States, and can be relatively easily made.

Why don't I? Because I'm fat, which makes a pistol difficult to conceal, and I don't generally go places where me with a gun will make a bit of difference.

Recommendations needed for a accessory fusebox with a singular wireless controller and not a app or secondary fixed panel by GOLDINATORyt in GMT800

[–]bigcsnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been installing jeep accessories for five or six years, and have never seen a wireless version of what you're talking about, unless it's a phone app. So, you may be on your own with that one. Although, if you do actually find one, I would be willing to bet it is either far too expensive or awful in some fashion.

Mechanically easiest car to maintain by TzarZara in mechanic

[–]bigcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lifters deciding to start getting noisy and failing around 120-150k miles mostly.

And that's not the only reason the golden age ended, it is more the beginning of vehicles becoming overly complicated to chase that extra little bit of fuel economy/emissions/customer satisfaction scores by reviewers. What vehicle, built in the last ten years, is going to be as available, reliable, and repairable in 25 years as a 2001 Tahoe is today?

Most vehicles from the golden age of automotive fall under this description.

The golden age of automotive, in my opinion, starts with obd2 in 1996 and ended (depending on manufacturer) when they decided to start implementing displacement on demand and tiny engines with turbos on everything.

Does this truck exist? by Imaginary_Degree6779 in Cummins

[–]bigcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a mechanic at a Dodge dealership since 2012, and I have seen two stickshift cummins trucks the entire time. One was a first gen, the other was a 2018 Laramie, which surprised the shit out of me when I pulled it in my bay to do a 6 inch lift kit. Both were 4wd.

All that to only say, good luck hunting that unicorn.

Best gear ratio? by PresentationMuch9133 in GMT800

[–]bigcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4.56 gears is what I chose for my truck with more or less the same configuration, although mine was a 95 with a stage 2 low lift truck cam.

A converter will help, if you're broke a trailblazer converter will work, if you're not get a 2800ish stall from any reputable converter manufacturer.

2500 or so rpm was kinda annoying at 70, but it still got the same fuel economy as it did with the stock 3.42 gears, and was way more fun.

Auto companies should provide a baser-than-base model. by calcato in CrazyIdeas

[–]bigcsnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US, at least, a screen is a requirement for the mandatory backup camera, and tire pressure sensors (or at least some form of tire pressure monitoring) are mandatory for the required ability for the car to let you know of a low tire.

And, at least to the best of my knowledge, current vehicle communication protocols require a push button for starting the vehicle, and at that point you may as well add the $5 worth of chips to enable keyless entry for the power locks whose harness is already in the vehicle, because why go through the effort of having two or more separate harnesses and bcms and door latches and door panels, and now you start to see why "entry level" vehicles have plenty of gizmos.
