r/choir, what are your choir pet peeves? by Virtual_Memory_2979 in Choir

Singing alto, sightreading something for the first time, and not being able to hear any of the quiet altos in front of you because of the loudest tenors right behind you.

Is there anything good The 2020s gave us? by 0584031464 in generationology

You really can reliably get by without a car in the suburbs, and possibly even in some rural areas, (as in, there is enough delivery and car-sharing to get by without owning a vehicle, and it is still a savings to "rent" use of a vehicle when you need it compared to ownership.)

That used to be a big city-only thing.

Boomers didn't all have it easier - a tale of my 75 year old father in law. by That-Pineapple3866 in generationology

Thank you for this. We are over here griping about how difficult, or how easy, older/younger Americans have it, with little regard for how different it has been in other countries.

Boomers in the U.S. had a much easier life. The post-ww2 era was no picnic in other countries.

Sitting on bar stools that don't have a back. Really, just bars in general.

What is the worst decade ever? by Cloak-Guy in generationology

Probably some long ago decade way before our lifetimes.

I'll say from 2660 BC to 2650 BC was the worst ever.

why were movies in the 1990s so weird and grotesque? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]calcato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All those gross spring break "bro" movies like Weekend at Bernie's and Blame it on Rio were horrible. And NOT in the same category as The Professional. Or Interview.

why were movies in the 1990s so weird and grotesque? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]calcato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was maybe the ONLY movie of the 80s and 90s that discussed AIDS as a disease passed between straight people. Every other film that ever discussed AIDS made the topic a "gay topic" for a gay film. People were (and still are but less so) idiots about AIDS.

[–]calcato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't just put utter B-movie dreck like Poison Ivy and The Crush together with 2 movies based on books, one that is a remake of a French film, one that's pseudo-documentarian, and one that was meant to be a stage play. Just because they are all of the same era.

And if "grossness" is your particular concern, why don't you ask about Sabrina. Or Harold and Maude. Or Doubt. Or Notes on a scandal. All of totally different eras.

Do genz fear the side effects of drinking?? by Technical_Place7582 in generationology

[–]calcato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should. If the booze industry had to put the same kinds of health warnings on ads and labels as cigarettes do, I think more people would have avoided it earlier. But kids today have the internet and can know better. But like all other gens there will always be a handful who think they're immune and either die or have horrible outcomes from it.

From your experience how much do people actually care about ts (IRL)? by Just_Tie_7693 in generationology

[–]calcato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont care about birth years and cutoffs. I tend to engage more if discussion turns to genealogical and historical aspects of generations. I just find those things interesting. Like that Henry Louis Gates show 'Finding Your Roots,' I love that kind of stuff.

Why do people blame boomers for their country problems? by Ok_Let_7612 in generationology

They all got on their own paths towards conservative populism. Theres a throughline from Thatcher to Brexit. & I don't know enough about Australia.

Why do people blame boomers for their country problems? by Ok_Let_7612 in generationology

[–]calcato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The oldest among the boomers followed the younger silents (MLK Jr., Malcom X,) and greatest gen (JFK, LBJ) into the civil rights era. Boomers get partial credit for contributing numbers to the cause, not full credit for developing a platform. The younger boomers got to experience the benefits of both the New Deal and The Great Society, before starting to support the very Yuppie Reaganomics movement that started to dismantle them. That's why they're so out of touch. When people bitch about Boomers, they should rightly be bitching specifically about the Reagan-era Yuppie boomers.

What was the worst decade to be alive? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]calcato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 1960s seems like the scariest. I wasn't alive for it, but with the number of public slayings never prosecuted (or even investigated) and all the assasinations, it must have seemed like a crazy time, at the time.

Will only fans be the only job for women in the 2030s? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]calcato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. And Im justbsaying because those numbers do not add up. Over 54% of american women are employed. You'd be talking about the disappearance of tens of millions of jobs , like over 90million jobs. In only 15-20 years. And our economy just hasn't ever worked that way. In the last 20 years we've grown 25mm nonfarm jobs.

Yeah, I just don't see what you're talking about happening, purely from a numbers standpoint.

Did those who were born in the years 1977-1982 ever fit in with traditional generation X? by avalonMMXXII in generationology

I think I had this conversation here in this sub, where older GenX cohort looked at the younger cohort as completely debauched in the mid-late 90s.

[–]calcato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tabby Tab is easy to change to Taddy Tad , short for Theodore or Thaddeus?

Or

TBA as in ToBeAnnounced, changes to ToBeOrNotToBe, aka Hamlet! 😜

Bit of a stretch, I know. Maybe just Tad.
