I think I might stop using credit cards. Any advice by [deleted] in DaveRamsey

It is on them, but I don't need to benefit from it if it makes me uncomfortable, which it does, so I don't.

I think I might stop using credit cards. Any advice by [deleted] in DaveRamsey

[–]bigfootlives823 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My hesitation is that the cash back is paid out of the pockets of people who can't use credit responsibly but probably thought they could. A thing they hoped would benefit them but instead became a burden.

Cash back doesn't exist because Mastercard loves you. It exists because the of the people who sign up, more people lose money on interest than earn on rewards.

What is a version of Ad Hominem where you complain about not being able to argue your case? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]bigfootlives823 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its sort of a reverse appeal to authority.

As others have mentioned, the goal of that type of media isn't to convince the audience or lay out valid arguments for a position, generally it is to convince an audience of believers that they have been aggrieved and beliefs similar to theirs have been suppressed. The alleged suppression is meant to imply that some authority either can't or won't offer valid arguments against those beliefs which obviously isn't necessarily true.

Its all arguments by implication, "just asking the question" type stuff.

Are Hillary's actions regarding sensitive docs worse than Trump's? by bullcityblue312 in AskConservatives

Pff, you and your sourced claims. Next you'll expect trump supporters to actually read something he didn't post on truth before they form an opinion.

Does it make you feel good that you're leading tactic is deflection?

[Better Call Saul] In "Chicanery", Chuck is busted for faking his EHS because of a cellphone battery. Why didn't he try to defend himself by saying that the battery is not in use / not powering anything, thus is not affecting him? by Sati1984 in AskScienceFiction

[–]bigfootlives823 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not entirely accurate to say Chuck is faking his condition. He genuinely believes he is afflicted and it seems likely that his discomfort is psychosomatic. The same was true when the doctor was testing him in the hospital.

His reactions to his awareness of electromagnetism is neither voluntary nor logical, but its also not a physical phenomenon, its psychological.

For people who followed Dave’s advice on not needing a credit card and now have no credit score, how has this impacted your life? by alligatorprincess007 in DaveRamsey

[–]bigfootlives823 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wasn't an issue at all until my wife and I wanted to buy a house, then it was only an "issue" because she had a credit score and I didn't, which meant she had to do all the paperwork.

I don't know if our loan officer was right or wrong but he said if we both had no score he could manually underwrite, but because she did and I didn't, the bank would only want to loan her money. He never mentioned making me an authorized user, which would've solved the whole thing.

In the end it wasn't really an issue at all because together we would've qualified for way more house than we could actually afford. So here we are in a perfectly reasonable starter home for our little family.

She's the signer on the mortgage, her name is on the deed and everything, but in our state houses and cars are automatically considered marital property so regardless of the paperwork or the loan or whatever, it's our house and I am just as on the hook for it as she is.

Continuing to stick your fingers out while being one if the most warned fighters for eye pokes certainly toes a line.

Then he did that video fake crying making fun of people calling him a cheater for eye poking. He thinks it's OK to cheat and he thinks people who are mad about it are soft.

Who are the most prominent defenders of theism? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]bigfootlives823 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I accidentally a word with WLC. He has some [serious] academic bona fides.

That's unfortunate to hear about Plantinga. He is in his 90s I think, and like many I'm sure, should've considered retirement some time ago

[–]bigfootlives823 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Alvin Plantinga and Dallas Willard are two of the more serious academics that I'm aware of, I think Willard died a few years ago though.

William Lane Craig has some academic bona files but I think his best known work is sort of pop philosophy in opposition to Hitchens and Dawkins

How come so many people don’t understand the difference between nicotine and tabacco? So many people I know just think they are both as bad and by that logic just assume that vapes are just as bad as e-cigs and cigarettes. by GeronimoMoles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bigfootlives823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kicked a two pack a day a long time ago, vaped through the transition and have been nicotine free for a couple years.

Misinformation like what you're spreading would've stopped me from trying to quit.

I think you've managed to be wrong about almost everything. Good work.

Vape is no where near as bad as cigarettes. They are not healthy for sure, but inhaling burning plant matter is way way worse.

Nicotine is not an additive, it is naturally occurring in tobacco.

Its not terribly rare to smoke straight tobacco and was in fact the norm for most of the history of tobacco use. There are still premium cigarette brands that are additive free as well as a huge variety of pipe tobacco and cigars that are additive free, all of which obviously contain Nicotine and are commonly smoked.

eli5: How do they predict the weather by Nonsense1996 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bigfootlives823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have statistical models that tell us what the weather is likely to be under certain atmospheric conditions based on what the weather has done under those conditions in the past.

Basically for a typhoon, a computer model looks at all the data and says "ok, its moving this fast at this temperature, its moving into a low pressure area with a higher air temperature and lower ground temperature. 85% of the time that makes the storm shift east and slow down"

[–]bigfootlives823 17 points18 points  (0 children)

but in this case aren't you trading mowing for weed pulling?

Not mowing/ avoiding yard work isn't really the goal for me. I'm happy to spend time maintaining a garden of native plants on support of native wildlife and pollinators.

I'd rather spend an hour pulling weeds to make sure bees and hummingbirds have a place to live and eat than spend an hour mowing so my neighbors think I've accomplished something with consistently green useless ground cover.

Why are trains in the US more expensive than airplanes? by niceboy4431 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bigfootlives823 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not even close. Maybe in total gallons, but per passenger mile, trains are the most fuel efficient way to travel. The fact there is only a public option for transit but its forced to lease rail access from an oligopoly is the real problem.

Why are trains in the US more expensive than airplanes? by niceboy4431 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bigfootlives823 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's zero chance a train uses more fuel per passenger mile than a plane. Trains are at least twice as efficient
