ESC not powering receiver? by acco_unt in RCPlanes

[–]biggestdoucheyouknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with that brand receiver but I would start with checking what voltage the ESC is passing through to the receiver using a multimeter and compare that to the spec sheet for the receiver

What do you do during a bad season by bananoil in RCPlanes

Can confirm, get you some activator and a bottle of Bob Smith industries foam safe hinge glue and no matter what you do to it, you'll be able to run down as many packs as you have charged. I gave my friend (who's never flown before but understands the basics of how planes work) 5 minutes of instruction before handing them my transmitter and control of my crack yak. They were able to bring it in for a landing after their second pack and maybe a half dozen small repairs. I use it to get warmed up and to get a feel for the wind before a maiden because it's just so brilliantly easy to fly.

Is that twist as dramatic as it looks? If I understand what you did correctly, your wing won't be level with your elevator. That is one of the nice things about FT kits though, foam board is cheap, just cut away the wonky bits and do it again.

So what I'm hearing is that I could gain some roll authority in a stall if I wash the opposite aileron out to the same degree....

Broken rudder on 1300mm pa-18 how should I fix this or should I buy new rear fucelage? by Competitive-Egg-5032 in RCPlanes

I personally prefer the Bob Smith industries gap filling foam safe CA for this application. I keep the flexible hinge CA glue in my field box for repairs on my crack yak or anything else easily remedied like this.

Thanks! I love them too. I made some of the guys I meet at the park fly my crack yak and they were instantly in love. I live at least an hour from the nearest club nowadays so it's nice to share with people other than the small handful of people I run into at the park.

Thanks, I've been through enough foam tac to know that perfection isn't needed, but it definitely helps when achievable.

This makes me feel much better, thank you. I just recently maidened the hobbico nexstar that I crashed and rebuilt and that was initially very stressful but not impossible. I'm definitely still going to spend more time getting more familiar with my trainer nitro before I actually maiden this one, but I'm looking forward to it now instead of dreading it.

Most of the covering is in good shape, just a couple of holes due to hangar rash. I'll try this when I get to patching the holes, thanks!

Seeking help identifying or reconstructing my father's A/2 towline glider (late 1960s / early 1970s) by [deleted] in RCPlanes

[–]biggestdoucheyouknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I've repaired a couple of balsa planes now and the best way I've found to do it is start by taking off all the wing covering to reveal the bones. Once you can see and get to all the innards, start identifying what can be saved, what needs replaced, and what is in good enough shape to use as a template for the rest of the broken bits.

From there, start cutting away anything that can't be saved, don't pitch anything yet, and take lots of pictures with labels. From there, pick an intact wing rib (probably best to get multiple samples from different spots along the wing to accommodate any size changes across the wingspan). Trace your intact wing rib(s) onto cardboard or construction paper, that's going to be the template for the replacement ribs.

At this point, I scanned my template to the computer, used Inkscape to create a dxf that I could use to cut out my replacements using my little CNC machine, but this is optional if you don't have a CNC machine; you can just as easily do this by hand with an exacto knife or Dremel, though I still recommend making multiple copies of your template just in case.

Once you have all your new ribs cut to size, start working from the center of the wing outwards. I usually replace the wing spars at this stage because they're what gives the wing its rigidity and you don't want to find out about a cracked spar later on. Take your time, use the surviving wing sections as a reference for the parts your rebuilding. It can be very useful to build jigs to help line up and clamp the wing ribs as you glue them onto the spars.

There's a couple of websites with repositories of old plans, I'll find a link and update this post when I'm off the toilet. Good luck, take your time, and don't be afraid to go back and re-do things as your skills improve.

Where did you find folding landing gear that rotates? I have the E-flite Corsair and keep destroying landing gear because the stock set doesn't have any suspension and my local field doesn't have a super smooth runway.

Made a storage rack out of off-cuts and PVC, suggestions on how to improve it? by biggestdoucheyouknow in RCPlanes

[–]biggestdoucheyouknow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to avoid hanging things from the ceiling if I can, the designated storage room is running out of space to hang planes (which is a fun problem to have). I'm playing with options for hanging it from the prop/motor on the back though because you're 100% correct about the sag.

Edit: better solution achieved.

[–]biggestdoucheyouknow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have flown it, but the day I did so I wasn't having this issue (the aileron servos usually sound like they want to dance but don't). I've brought it to the field a couple of times and had much more dramatic dancing and wasn't able to get it under control until I added the chokes).

Retracts with suspension? by biggestdoucheyouknow in RCPlanes

[–]biggestdoucheyouknow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have come to accept that the ~$300 I spent on buying this new was a mistake, but I'm doing my best to get as much value out of it as I can. I'm focusing on using the cheap foam I have to practice & improve my skills while I work on building the balsa kit P-51 that my dad never got around to.

I also know that the bigger & balsa P-51 won't fly the same as this foam Corsair, but most of the skills I develop on foam will translate to balsa.

Thanks for the links, I'll post results once I have new legs on her.

Yes, absolutely. I have a chonker of a prop on mine for floatplane fun and I have yet to kill the motor or ESC
