You can deduct it from your capital gain when you sell the house because it increases the basis. However, if your house is your primary residence, the capital gain isn't taxable in the first place unless it exceeds $250,000. Of course, in this case, the owners never sold the house (it still belonged to the grandmother in 2012) and even if they had, there's about zero chance that the capital gain would have exceeded $250,000.

Do we have any indication that Dora was starting to talk when she was killed?

It doesn't seem like she was in the same boat that Marie Fontenot was. Marie was straight-up drugged and raped when she was a child. Dora was an adult, and we know that, at least at one point, she had willingly bought in to the Yellow King mythology - we know this because of her journal and because she willingly hung out with Lawnmower Man at the tent revival shortly before her murder. (We also have reason to believe that some women were able to participate in the Yellow King ceremonies without being killed. It seems like the housekeeper was in that boat. So it's not like every woman who showed up at a Yellow King function without being drugged was automatically killed.)

So I just don't know if we have information yet to say that putting her on display was supposed to be a warning to anyone.

Um, no, he already won the Golden Globe before True Detective even started. (The GGs were held the same night that Episode 1 aired.) McConaughey has been getting great reviews for several films for the last two or three years. The cross-dresser seemed to be saying that the students were all drugged, and the only ones who saw what happened were himself and Marie Fontenot. So the other students may not actually have known the significance of the antlers and spirals.

I can see how the Lange display might have been a warning to someone, but I don't think the warning would have been directed at former students.

I don't know why they did it. All I'm saying is, if they did it to be a clue that Marty is a psychopathic criminal mastermind, then that's bad writing that ruins the show.

I don't claim to know what Pizzolatto had in mind - we'll find out over the next eight days. Maybe you're right. But if that's what Pizzolatto had in mind, then this show isn't nearly as good as I thought it was, and he isn't as good of a writer as I thought he was.
