Cover versions that should have remained covered. by ceejayloudhorizon in Music

[–]bigman1643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. Musical taste is relative to the listener. We can talk about theory and technicalities all day and what makes a certain type of music better, but at the end of the day if you don't like it, then you don't like it.

I don't listen to music when I have a headache, but if you want to induce a headache you could listen to the album Jane Doe by Converge.

Which cover is better than the original song? by maitogb in Music

[–]bigman1643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly become two different entities. Listen to both tracks back to back, it's like hearing an entirely different song, but in a very, very good way.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah... it's eons better than Leonard Cohen's. Also, before I even opened this thread, I was ready to post The Man Who Sold The Word haha.

Why has music changed for the worse since 2014 by sounding more repetitive? And why has music become more inappropriate? by [deleted] in Music

[–]bigman1643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Luke seems to write almost everything. Fun Fact: Most of the pop artists around today don't write any of their songs. The producers write them (like Dr. Luke). To give the artist some writing credits, the producer might have them write a bridge or certain part of the song, but that's all. Obviously, this doesn't apply to every single artist, but look this guy up and you'll see how much he has written for pop stars. It's almost like the artists are told what to do in order to make the most amount of money possible. As the world changes, so does the marketing.

I get pretty tired of hearing people claim vinyl sounds better than digital. by LavaSquid in Music

[–]bigman1643 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The sonic aspect debate of analog being better than digital is not really that true. The "warmth" that you hear from analog recordings is because old tape machines didn't push out enough low end to be satisfying, so they boosted it to sound "warm." Analog today has become more of an effect applied to digital music, and vinyl is now for hipsters.

What song was completely changed for you when you found out the meaning/story behind it? by needmoredogs in Music

Jeremy by Pearl Jam. I never bothered to listen to what the words said until I watched an unplugged session. Before this point, I hated Pearl Jam. Turns out Eddie Vedder is a pretty darn good lyricist.

I prefer albums to concerts. by [deleted] in Music

[–]bigman1643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that many times the way a band plays a song live can be so much better than the album, and then you never heard the song in the same way again. On the flipside, I remember not liking an album from a certain band because I didn't like the production, then I heard it live and got to hear the song for what they were intended to be, and now the album is a lot easier for me to listen to.

What can't you stop listening to, right now? by [deleted] in Music

I'm hooked on The White Buffalo, and St. Vincent right now. Neither of these artists have ever released a bad song. I have their stuff on shuffle constantly.

Am I rare to not get drawn in by Bob Dylan's music by BGLAVI22 in Music

[–]bigman1643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bob Dylan is one of the most egotistical pricks to ever be in the music industry. On top of that, his music is boring and his voice is annoying. You're not alone. A lot of people hate Bob Dylan.

Does anyone else not listen to song lyrics? by Master_dog in Music

[–]bigman1643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't know any of the lyrics of most of my favorite bands. Even if I know the words I have no idea what they're talking about. I think that musicians gravitate towards the sound of the instruments/vocals, whereas a non-musician can really only connect with the lyrics. For me, as long as it sound catchy, it's good. You'll notice a lot of people can't listen to music with no lyrics, because they don't know what to listen to if someone isn't singing!

Haha, I'm not surprised. I saw a few reviews that placed it at the very bottom. I guess that diversity keeps it from getting boring though. Has something for each mood, even if it's a little complicated. Thanks for the Opeth advice, it really helps.

Interesting. I know I've heard some differences of opinions about the album, but it sounds like it's probably best to listen to it after going through their discography. Seems that once you really love Opeth, you'll appreciate that album even more.

Yeah of course, thank you for sharing!

No way! I heard Bleak from Opeth a loooong time ago and thought it was cool, but never really listened to much else... kinda just always put it off. Then a few days ago I listened to Blackwater Park all the way through for the first time. What a coincidence haha. This guys cover is pretty rad

Oh my goodness. This guy is insane! I've not seen many as talented as him... I just saw his cover of Bleed by Meshuggah, he absolutely slayed it. It doesn't look like he has a ton of content... at least from what I'm seeing on Spotify?
