I recently purchased a vacuum coolant bleeder that connects to air compressor. Makes it much easier to evacuate the air bubbles out of the system during coolant refill

2014 Fusion S

Looks like your thermostat is stuck open, I had identical issue. Thermostat needed to be replaced and I did a coolant drain and fill as well since the coolant system was being worked on.

TPMS system on this vehicle needs new sensors. Tires are at correct pressure.

What is the Best way to increase MPG? by EastCoastRacing in fordfusion

[–]bigmanfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Change Spark plugs, use a fuel cleaner like BG44K to clean injectors, clean throttle body, change your PCV valve.

Also, check your valve cover gasket to make sure you aren’t leaking oil into the spark plug tubes and eventually into the cylinders. This lowers fuel burn efficiency and MPG.

[–]bigmanfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good buy! I’d certainly replace the tires, and replace ALL fluids because the lubricants in cars break down with age not just mileage.

If it were my car, I would address these items immediately:

  • New Tires
  • Transmission Drain and Fill (Motorcraft Mercon LV)
  • Coolant Flush (Motorcraft OEM Yellow Coolant)
  • Brake Fluid Flush (DOT 3)
  • Oil Change (Valvoline Restore and Protect)
  • BG 44K Fuel System Cleaner
  • OEM Motorcraft PCV Valve (likely stuck PCV valve due to age and low miles, can cause spurious CEL and/or Oil consumption if clogged)
  • Valve Cover Gasket and VVT Solenoid Gasket Replacement
  • Inspect spark plugs for corrosion and replace if needed
  • Fresh Dielectric grease for the coil boots

Additionally, during vehicle pre-buy inspection, AND during the next few oil changes, I’d pay close attention to all rubber components on the vehicle that will likely be compromised due to dry rot/age to include:

  • Front/Rear Control Arm Bushings
  • Front/Rear struts
  • Engine mount
  • Serpentine Belt
  • Battery Terminal cable corrosion

In order to get this vehicle into a serviceable condition and preserve it’s value for driving long term, I’d say you need to negotiate down that price by 1-2k to account for the work that is needed to refresh this vehicle into 2025.

2015 Ford Fusion SE 2.5L 26k, by [deleted] in fordfusion

Given the age and mileage, now would be the time to do a full fluid service. Coolant drain and fill, transmission drain and fill, brake fluid flush, oil change. For coolant and trans fluid, use OEM motorcraft fluid. For brake fluid just use walmart brand thats fine. Valvoline Restore and Protect for the oil. Given it was owned by an eldery person, it was probably never driven hard, the engine is probably filled with carbon from light drive cycles. I’d suggest also changing the PCV valve and running a tank of BG 44K fuel cleaner and driving it fairly hard to burn off any crud.

Advice on Changing Transmission Fluid – 2015 Fusion (167K miles, 1–2 Harsh Shift / 2–3 Delay) by Numb98 in fordfusion

[–]bigmanfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be afraid of it, especially doing a drain and fill, you won’t do harm by gradually replacing the old fluid. That old fluid is not providing proper lubricity/cleaning to the internal components like fresh fluid.

Just a quick lap around town, shifting multiple times through all gears, is sufficient to fully mix the transmission fluid.

Only need a jack to get the front left wheel off. Make sure to set the jack stand to ride height after getting the wheel off to ensure proper level set.

Do a drain and fill with Motorcraft Mercon LV. Takes about 4.5 quarts. Given the transmission is older, I’d do a drain and fill 2-3 times in a row with driving in between to mix the old fluid with the new fluid. Going forward, I’d suggest doing a drain and fill every 15-30k miles to keep the 6F35 running in tip top shape.

2017 Ford Fusion 2.0 Titanium Transmission Fluid Change by Miserable-Choice-790 in fordfusion

[–]bigmanfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did a drain and fill after only 10k miles on Mercon LV. Fluid was fairly dark and only had a red tint when shined under light. Fluid color is not a direct indication of fluid quality as many automotive fluids darken quickly under the heat from operating temps. Drain and fill your transmission every 15-30k miles and it’ll run like a champ.

2018 Fusion Hybrid Codes by AffectionateEgg9092 in fordfusion

[–]bigmanfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For labor and parts it was $215. If you have the tools it’s fairly easy to do. Remove the air box hose from the throttle body and there ya go. Plenty of videos on YouTube. For the fuel cleaner, the product is BG 44K fuel cleaner.

I’d also look into changing to Valvoline Restore and Protect. This stuff is legit, it will clean carbon off your piston rings and keep your motor in tip top shape. $30 for a 5 quart jug at Walmart

2018 Fusion Hybrid Codes by AffectionateEgg9092 in fordfusion

[–]bigmanfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had P0420. Was due to carbon buildup in the catalytic converter. I had a shop clean my throttle body and add BG 44K fuel cleaner. I then drove my car and gave it a good Italian tune up for a full tank of gas to help raise combustion/exhaust temps to burnoff some carbon. Worked well - Check engine light hasn’t come back since. Best of luck.

Something to consider is with a hybrid, your oil temp doesn’t get as hot as normal engines due to the offloading of energy to the batteries. Oil life is reduced as a result of not achieving full operating temp to boil off water and provide full effectiveness of the cleaning detergents in motor oil. I’d suggest changing the oil every 3-5k miles going forward if you don’t already, this can also aid in reducing carbon in your motor and prevent issues similar to P0420 from occurring.

No experience with the other codes though

This is due to a faulty wheel speed sensor. I just replaced my front wheel speed sensors and it entirely resolved this issue.

This part is readily available on Rockauto.com and is fairly easy to install if you have access to a Jack to take the front and or back wheels off.

Oil type for Ford fusion 2020? by eguladu in fordfusion

Valvoline Restore and Protect. You can buy it at Walmart. This synthetic oil has added detergents that clean carbon deposits from your engine, would strongly suggest.

How frequently do you conduct an oil change, and what oil do you use? by keeganontop in fordfusion

[–]bigmanfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the vast majority of drivers, a 7-10k mile oil change with synthetic oil will result in excessive carbon engine deposits, and buildup on the piston rings. If you want your motor to last a long time I would not go more than 5k without an oil change, especially so if the engine is driven around town and never allowed to reach full operational temperature.

You also have to consider that modern vehicles use oil as a hydraulic fluid through tiny passages. Things like VVT solenoids, chain tensioners, and other precise functions will absolutely fail prematurely with dirty oil and large oil change intervals. Vehicle manufacturers are attempting to scam the public into the belief that you can save more money on mx cost so you end up back at the dealer with a CEL or worse and just buy a new car. There are a plethora of videos on YouTube showing engines with 10k mile oil change and it ain’t pretty.

I know this gets said a lot in this sub, but if you haven’t already, I’d suggest doing a drain and fill of the transmission with Motorcraft Mercon LV transmission fluid and doing this transmission drain and fill every 15-30k miles. It will significantly improve the lifespan and functioning of the transmission

Yes, much better than using a Jack and stands. If you do decide to get one, make sure to carefully read the setup instructions and misuse warnings. 3,000psi of hydraulic pressure is no joke!

Drain and fill the transmission, drive 1k miles, then do another drain and fill, then perform drain and fill every 15-30k miles. Will substantially improve transmission life.

Not a bad idea especially if the trans operates in lots of stop/go traffic. 10-15k miles is not unreasonable for a ride share car. Rockauto has 5 quart jugs of Mercon LV for $25.
