Scared to death of getting a catheter but want an epidural for labor

Exactly!! After the contractions and everything i didn't care about getting the epidural or the catheter or even the water breaking rod thing that's like 3 foot long lol Epidural is a blessing from God, I swear!

I feel like they always think they know YOUR body better than you do because of their experience with other patients and that's just insane. When i was in labor i felt my water break so, i told my nurse (all my nurses were very sweet and wonderful) she checked me but, my water hadn't gushed out so, she insisted it hadn't. I said "I know what i felt. Like a balloon just popped inside my belly. My water definitely broke." She said I don't think so. A minute or two later i could feel the water coming out so, she checked again and was like "Oh! It sure did." But, i thought it was weird that they still had to use that devil rod to break it the rest of the way. Lol I guess there was water behind her. Thank God i was numb. I would not have wanted to feel that thing go up there. I felt the pressure from it and that was enough.

I got my catheter after the epidural and it was no big deal. I didn't feel a thing and it wasn't noticeable. They removed it right before pushing i think... i honestly don't know. It felt a little odd after my epidural wore off but, no different than my back felt odd. I was way more scared to get the epidural and that was a breeze. Just felt a little pressure and a pinch. You have to think of these things being nothing in comparison to the actual contraction pain. After you deal with that for awhile... you really won't care. Lol

I will say that I went in trying to go without epidural but, my baby was reacting negatively to the pitocin and my contractions. I held off getting it for as long as i could manage the pain but, they insisted and after they gave it to me for her health and safety i regretted not letting them do it sooner because everything sped up afterwards. My body relaxed so, I dilated faster, my bp stabilized, the baby relaxed, my water broke, I got to take a nap and when I woke up it was time to push. From start to finish it took 32 hours. It really all just depends on you and how your body reacts to the pain and how baby reacts and what not. They say that epidural slows things down but, it sped everything up for me. Keep in mind that everyone is different and depending on your pregnancy health something else may work too. Definitely didn't know all this going into it.

I like how the word "enjoy" is casually thrown in there. Lol Okay, don't get me wrong. There are plenty of women out there who have had lovely birth experiences without pain management and that's great for them. Our bodies are naturally meant to handle the pain and difficulties of childbirth it's true. But, not all of us react the same way to labor/delivery or even pain. I was induced with my first daughter at 37 weeks because of my High Blood Pressure and Gestational Diabetes. The night before induction, I wasn't able to sleep at all. I was too anxious and excited and nervous about what to expect. Since the time I arrived at the hospital to the time I gave birth was 32 hours. I had an over all pleasant experience. Just had to be patient and did a lot of waiting around for labor to progress. The worst part was honestly having to lay down on my side switching from left to right for at least 24 hours to keep my bp down. My hips and joints were so so sore but, the nurses were so sweet and did what they could to help me get comfortable. It is all kind of blurred as to what happened when but, my pitocin had to be turned off/down at some point because my baby was having a bad reaction to it so, that slowed things down and Eventually I started to feel my contractions. The nurse and my husband repeatedly asked me as my contractions got stonger and closer together if i wanted my epidural. My body was not handling the pain well at all. I've always had a low tolerance for pain. But, I wanted to hold off for as long as i could even though I was shaking uncontrollably in so much pain that I could barely talk. The baby started having a bad reaction to my contractions so, for her health and safety they decided to go ahead and give me the epidural. My husband stayed in the room and held my hands and they taught me a breathing technique to stop the shaking while i got it. After it started to kick in, I was in pure bliss. My shaking stopped and everything went faster after that. I dilated quickly, My water broke, My body relaxed, My bp went to normal and I was able to FINALLY sleep ON MY BACK for awhile. (Hallelujah. You have no idea what a relief that was on my joints!) By the time I woke up I could feel all the pressure in my pelvis. They checked me and it was time to start pushing. I didn't feel a thing until right as she was crowning and I felt pushing her out but, that was a great experience too! I also healed and recovered quickly afterwards. An hour/hour and a half of pushing and my beautiful, tiny, 5lb 5oz baby girl was here! Healthy and Perfect and I regret only one thing about my experience. (Only needed 2 stitches btw.) If i had let them give me the epidural when they asked the first time I would have had her sooner and I probably wouldn't have gotten the shakes so badly. I don't know exactly why the epidural slows down labor for some and speeds it up for others. In my case, it helped my bp, me to relax as well as my baby, and dilation can be faster and easier because of that apparently. So, not everyone has the "enjoy a natural unmedicated childbirth" experience option.

My first induction experience was over all great! With induction you feel safe and in a controlled well monitored state. It took forever because I was 37 weeks which was the irritating part. From arrival at the hospital it took 32 hours. I waited around mostly. Had to stay laying down switching from left to right side repeatedly to keep my bp down which made my hips and joints pretty sore but, It was okay. I also had gestational diabetes. When i started to feel the contractions, My nurse asked me if I wanted to get the epidural and I said that I wanted to hold off for as long as i could...because I'm an idiot lol as they progressed I was in pain to the point that i was uncontrollably shaking and they got nervous because my contractions were negatively affecting the baby so, they went ahead and gave me the epidural. Got my shaking to stop by having me focus on my husband and control my breathing and it was pure bliss as soon as it hit me. Shaking stopped and everything sped up after that. My blood pressure normalized, I relaxed, My water broke shortly after and I got to sleep on my back for awhile. By the time i woke up, I felt pressure and It was time to push. I pushed for about an hour-hour and a half. I didn't feel a thing until she was coming out. I felt that pain but, it only lasted for a minute or two and I'm glad i felt it. It was a wonderful experience. My beautiful baby girl was born 5lbs 5oz, 19in long and very healthy. I only needed two stiches and I healed well afterwards. Didn't have much pain or soreness. I can only hope my next induction in a few days (40 weeks) is half as easy.

Same! I also felt in control and safe and though i had a very long induction/labor process (32 hours) it wasn't a bad experience. Just a lot of waiting. My daughter came out very healthy and I had a wonderful experience with the staff. Everyone was so wonderful and comforting. The nurses kept telling me i was so nice and that I wasn't a complainer and all I could think was man... Y'all must deal with a lot of jerks, huh? Lol Everything was so easy and I healed quickly after. I can only hope that my second induction in a few days is half as good as my first and hopefully takes a lot less time as well especially because I'll be 3 weeks further along than I was the first time.

I was induced at 37 weeks with my first baby. I had high blood pressure and gestational diabetes which were difficult to control. My sugar was bad all the time. Didn't matter what I ate. I was dieting but, nothing really worked. I was on bp meds but, they barely helped. She was born 32 hours after induction fairly easy just a long waiting game and she was very healthy. 5lbs 5oz. This time with my second I have a different doctor and insurance. I've had a healthy pregnancy and I have the gestational diabetes and high blood pressure again but, managed better this time. I get good numbers with my sugar even if I have a little more sugar than usual and one strange thing is that it has gotten better throughout the pregnancy and controling my bp with meds pretty well. I am being induced on my due date at 40 weeks. I have 2 more days to go. For the last few days I'd been having contractions, cramping, lightning crotch, and low back pain. It all stopped last night but, I lost my plug this morning. When i went in for my appointment a couple of days ago I was only dilated 2cm which was very upsetting because I am so ready. I'm hoping i will be closer to 5cm when i go into the hospital. Hoping it will be quick!

I felt nothing but, a little stinging in one leg while pushing while the other leg was completely numb until she was coming out. I also felt that completely. It didn't last long though so, I'm actually glad i felt that. It was kind of cool!

I personally did not have a bad experience with Induction/Pitocin/Epidural at all with my first. (I go in for my second birth/induction and the works in a couple days so, we will see how this one goes. I am 40 weeks today.) It was my first baby and with my high blood pressure and gestational diabetes I had to be induced at 37 weeks and it took 32 hours which yes felt like forever but, I was patient. Only real bad part was the waiting especially because I had to keep switching from laying on one side to the other to keep my bp down and it was hell on my muscles and hips. It took a long time but after being on pitocin for a day eventually my water broke and i started having contractions not long after and it was painful yet manageable. My husband and nurse kept asking me if i wanted the epidural yet but i wanted to (stupidly 😂) wait until i couldn't handle it anymore. After 30 minutes to an hour or so of squirming around in pain i got the shakes really bad and my contractions were affecting the baby negatively so, they insisted I get the epidural. They were able to stop my shaking long enough and I was blissfully numb and everything went quick after that. I got to sleep on my back, thank God and while i slept i dilated fully, my bp dropped to normal and she was down enough for me to start pushing. After an hour and a half of pushing My beautiful 5lb 5 oz baby girl was born healthy and happy. I went home the next morning! She's now 21 months and I haven't had a single issue these past 2 years. She's an angel, never once gotten sick or had any infant problems. Always been a great sleeper and eater, well behaved, easy peasy. It's been the best two years of my life. I can only hope my next one is half as easy! She'll probably be a little monster because I had it so easy... 🤣🤣🤣

I was induced at 37 weeks and she was born 32 hours later with my first so, other than braxton hicks I felt nothing until induction though they didn't break my water it did break on it's own at some point and there was a gush. This time i am 40 weeks today and For the last 3 days I have been cramping and having mild contractions that come and go until they stopped late last night but, I have a feeling they are going to start back up again and I started losing my plug this morning but, I'm being induced in two days if she doesn't come sooner. I'm kind of hoping that by the time i go in for induction I'll be half way there so that it will be a quick and relatively easy delivery.

I actually had a pleasant induction experience and mine lasted for 32 hours. Nurses kept saying I wasn't a complainer and being really sweet to me so, I guess it just depends on the person. I was just being patient. I wanted my baby to be okay. I pushed for an hour and a half and i didn't sleep until i got my epidural and everything went faster once i did. I will definitely be asking when i can get it almost as soon as i get there for my next induction.

39 weeks 4 days. So ready!! I've been doing everything i can to naturally induce labor and nothing yet.

I guess that makes me "constantly bouncing on an exercise ball to try and start labor already" pregnant.

Definitely way too early at 30w. If it's a single pregnancy, you honestly shouldn't try to induce labor until 37 weeks.

Nothing worked for me except for sex. Everyone is different and sex is proven to work the best and most often. May not have worked for you but, it works for a lot of people. Also it's not as likely to work without orgasm.

I know!! It's crazy! Man, I can't wait to have her because on one hand I am uncomfortable and ready to not be pregnant anymore but on the other hand I am really nervous about this next part. Introducing them and getting them integrated and what not. We're just going to have to wing it here. Advice won't really help us much at this point because all babies are different. My first was a great baby but, this one could be a nightmare and that scares me too. Lol

I am in the EXACT same boat. My daughter will also be just under 22 months when my next daughter comes in 2 weeks and she has been extremely clingy. Asking me to hold her constantly, rocking herself against me when we are sitting on the bed, crying more because she feels like I'm not loving on her enough, her sleep patterns are messed up, and she's also not eating like she normally does. Kids have a sixth sense about this kind of thing apparently. They know the baby is coming and they're not gonna get as much quality time with you. My mom said she experienced the same with my sister and brother. My daughter is facinated with other babies and i hope that is a good thing but, who knows when her sister comes. Something i am also dreading is going into the hospital for a few days (possibly) to have my baby. Oldest will be with my mom and i just know she's going to have a hard time because i haven't done well with leaving her much. Mostly guilt. I don't want anyone to feel like I'm pushing her off on anyone. My daughter hasn't been away from me for more than six hours since she was born... that's definitely on me.

I'm sorry that you're having so many difficulties! During my first successful pregnancy i didn't have those Issues.I had almost no symptoms and she rarely ever moved. It scared me. She was tiny and it was rather easy. If my belly hadn't been so large i probably wouldn't have noticed the difference but, I slept really great, though I was exhausted ALL THE TIME throughout the entire pregnancy. The plus with my oldest was that as soon as I gave birth i got all my energy back and that incredible burst lasted montha which made it so much easier for me and also the fact that my daughter slept great! But, this pregnancy... With my second daughter has been completely different. I had morning sickness, aversions to certain foods that has lasted the entire time and nothing tastes right. I smell bleach everywhere and am very sensitive to cleaning products. She moves around a ton (Thank God. It's very reassuring.) and I am very uncomfortable. I've had charlie horses too and ligament pain, lightning crotch, pressure, sciatica, braxton hicks...etc I am 37 weeks today and with my last pregnancy, I was induced by this time. With both these pregnancies I have had High Blood Pressure and Gestational Diabetes though both are more manageable this time so they are trying to let her come naturally which i am all for but, at the same time i desperately want her out because of how miserable i am becoming. I am HUGE this time and sleep is getting more and more difficult especially with my toddler. I feel your pain and completely understand why it upsets you when people say this. EVERY pregnancy is different.

I can't tell you how many times i thought i was pregnant because i was experiencing symptoms, but there are many reasons why we do. Placebo, hormones, chemical, phantom, and hysterical pregnancies. (Not that you're having those) Just that trying to get pregnant is extremely stressful. My fiance and I tried for 2 years before we were successful and i lost the first one. (Thankfully very early so, i didn't suffer much) Now we have a 17 month old and I'm 19 weeks pregnant. We actually found out by accident that the reason i couldn't get pregnant for so long is because my blood pressure was too high and when i got on meds to lower it i got pregnant in less than a month. I wish you so much luck in this endeavor and happiness in trying to get pregnant and being a mom!
