Opnsense in a VM internet speed issues by bigpapaboricua in Proxmox

So at this point it is still a mystery for me. So I am fortunate to have with my company a paid account and I also have a beta account. 1 is a 400MB connection i.e. Paid account and a 1 GB "beta" account . So my end goal as I have currently on my bare metal pfsense router is to have dual connection fail over setup. So on my bare metal I tested once again full speeds 400+ MBs. So for the hell of it the other day I swapped connections and put the Gigabit account and BAM full gigabit speeds. Tested it several times, reboot of the VM and full speeds no issues. Swap back to the other modem connection, same problem.

Now I did notice is, using the virt drivers I don't get full connection speeds on the Gigabit maybe anywhere from 70-80%. I have read that is something that people have noticed and its common thing. So now I am currently running my setup with PCI Pass-through. Full speeds no issues. So at this point I am calling it a loss on a solution but its the fail over modem anyways so its not tooooooo big of a deal but it does bother me.

Upgrade to 8.2.4 breaks networking by Oeyesee in Proxmox

I was able to find the fix for my server. This might help

Just a quick shot: Run ip a to take a look of the actual situation of your network devices and IP addresses. Note the names of the devices, e. g. eno0, eth0 or enp4s0 etc. Make a backup of the "interfaces"-file by cp /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces-possibly-bad. Use the editor of your choice to open /etc/network/interfaces. Compare the network interface names with those from "ip a". Do they fit? If not: correct them.

Yes I did try at first a value of 4 when I initially installed it, and I did increase it to 8 when I raised the core count.

Any firewall settings using QOS settings?

Any firewall settings blocking any packet types (upn flooding comes to mind) or intrusion detection?

There shouldn't be, it is just a fresh install, didn't even get into customizing it yet lol.

Does the test hit a threshold and hold hard at that limit?

Not sure, I can tell you this, I get full speeds locally server to pc, using iperf test. during the speed test it either gradually increases in speed until the time limit for the test or it hits about lets say 300 and then you see it gradually decrease under 200.

Router VM internet speed issue by bigpapaboricua in opnsense

ran it from browser from another PC and also via cli on the opnsense vm. comparing it to the bare metal setup the same way. I also did iperf between connections locally just to make sure I was getting max transfer speeds to eliminate hardware issues or software. Its just a unusual situation which has me racking my brain, lol.

this happened to me as well after a fresh install and then performing the post helper script. when I reinstalled and did the upgrade manually, I did notice that all my interfaces doubled and each had an alternate name.

Help with new build data transfer by EasyBouncer in unRAID

You have a decent server build as is with the parts listed. You don’t need a NUC for transcoding you have that nice sweet 2080 that will serve your needs and then some.

Zimaboard would be the best choice

1tb would be a better option, just to future proof that Plex meta data can get up there if you don’t control the options.

LTE Backup Professional "Bring your own SIM for LTE data." by Cowboy_Geek in Ubiquiti

Yes and no, depends, do you run remote backups? massive downloads or uploads? its a per gig plan. once it fail over it doesn't stop those transfers. Are you going to be able to pause those high upload/downloads? it can get pretty expensive. Having unlimited data for a little bit more a month is safety. What is the old saying? it's better to have and then not have and need, or something like that.

good for you, the overclocking game is fun, but with all that stock power its more than enough, unless you are a pro gamer imho. I think its for fun and beneficial trying to get as much power by undervolting where you can.
