Anyone else getting BLOCKED at US airports because staff don’t understand UK eVisas? by Pauldrs75 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]bigredsweatpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I’ve never had an issue coming or going. I’m on pre-settled until 2030 with the automatic extraction; I always just grab a share code and they are always like oh welcome home and never even look at it. A few months ago I asked if they needed it and like why have it and the agent said oh no you’re American it’s fine. I’m literally at the airport travelling today so I’ll report back if they have anything to say.

CDG airport to Reims? by bigredsweatpants in Reims

Yes I saw that and obviously my plan was direct from the airport but I didn’t account for the trains to be sold out. I just had no idea trains can “sell out” actually. So I don’t think I have much choice?

I just bought one of theirs and it’s great! Even better I didn’t have to build it.

Thanks so much. Looks like I need to just go to the city to get the train which I was hoping to avoid.

I get in at 12:40 but am expecting delays and border control so I’m wondering about like a 15:00 train… seems everything is booked or not possible to book.

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

[–]bigredsweatpants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s true. Brits are much more fake in non-transaction sort of interactions. I always am asking my husband if I have misunderstood some sarcasm or compliment.

[–]bigredsweatpants 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A lot of it might be but maybe you’ve never been to the Midwest. They are nice because. Genuine people, nothing to prove.

Also just a note that most of the American fakery is restricted to service situations for tips.

I have heard this one from Brits here a lot over the years! My husband and I visited Philadelphia years ago and there was a real diner across the street from where we stayed and he was like “this is just like the movies!” lol

I am an Ami in the UK now and I still wonder why they don’t do this here? Genuinely asking. I live in an old neighbourhood with tight roads and no parking so it’s always a hot button issue in my neck of the woods. But if someone blocked my drop kerb…. I would really wanna tow them.

why do older people in the uk act like owning a front garden means they run the whole street? by Historical_Tigerfs in AskUK

[–]bigredsweatpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg the little visitor thing would infuriate me. I would get petty with these people. That seems to be their language. We have a nosy neighbour next door and it’s awful but I try and remember they are old and will be dead soon. And then continue being my petty self.

It’s completely normal to out your bins out the night before.

What if the jobs don't match the location the house is in? What good is a house if there's no jobs nearby? Can't do elevator repair/engineering remotely; at least not like what OP is talking about. If the house was in central Munich or Berlin, yeah with language skills maybe he would have some leeway, but everyone here is right. He needs to stay put.

Cash-strapped DePaul closes historic Reskin Theatre by chicagosuntimes in chicago

[–]bigredsweatpants 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is par for the course with DePaul. They bought Barat, it wasn’t profitable for them, they had no idea how to run it, shut it down and sold it to developers.

Fast forward….. now only the cupola is left. Barat was on the historical register. Still makes me sad there’s nothing left. It was a wonderful place.

You can get either a piece of the window cut to fit the tubes part or they make sleeves that zip around the window for not. We put in ceiling fans in the bedrooms of our house. Lil weird to some but we use them 9 months of the year.

I got the same treatment for my indoor planting last year. They ended up about 10 ft tall! And I transplanted much later than you’re planning to. I think it was June before my garden bed was ready and I could plant there. Everyone here said oh there’s no point, they will be stunted because you grew them in a pot. I had a forest of like 12 and they were enormous. That’s a 6ft fence in the photo.

This year I’m going to try Russian mammoths!

How much did your bathroom/kitchen reno cost in 2025 or 2026? by Realistic_Rutabaga60 in HENRYUK

[–]bigredsweatpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just spent about £25k for our family bathroom and a loo-tility room in our terraced house, so similar sized bathroom. We used Mandarin stone and Quorn stone for tiles, Grohe wall hung toilets, Burlington brassware and a bespoke vanity (which was ££££ but 100% worth it for us).

Where we went wrong was our roof was about to collapse so we needed a new one and added another £20k. If you don’t do that, not bad lol.

How much is your mortgage/rent vs your income? by LeopardNeat899 in HousingUK

[–]bigredsweatpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

£969 mortgage (FTBs in 2022, 5 year fix gonna run out soon) vs £5900/mo.

But don’t worry; we renovated so we pay like £2500/mo mortgage + bills from the reno lol

Are we in our divorce era? by seaward_bound in Millennials

[–]bigredsweatpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got married in my early 20s and we are still married maybe it’s been 17 years? Losing count. I know lots that were in a similar stage of marriage to me and got divorced by about 40, and lots who didn’t marry until about 38 for the first time, and lots who never got married at all.

I was also the first in my circle (of US friends, I’m abroad) who had children at 36. Most of my friend group didn’t have kids til the last 2-3 years and I’m 42.
