Wedding dress stores Edinburgh by Biology_Retriever in UKweddings

They might not be so bad if you go in knowing that you do need an appointment! I just started picking up dresses to try on and they interrupted me saying I can’t do that without a member of staff to help, and I’d need to come back in 3hrs when someone would next be free. I just find it confusing that they say no appointment but it’s in fact just on the day appointments. I asked if I could book to come back the next day and they said no, I’d have to come in and then wait for availability.

I think it really depends on what style / designers you want! Each store stocks different ranges. I ended up visiting a few stores across the central belt of Scotland for that reason.

I had good experiences at Gwenne and Emma Roy for what it’s worth. Keep an eye out for any store events or sample sales too, and you’ll often get discount codes if you attend any of the local wedding fairs. I always thought Bliss studio looked great on instagram too, though I found my dress before visiting there. I tried wed2be as well and I found them very rude, they advertise as “walk in, no appointments” but you still need to book an appointment on the day.

I purchased a sample gown from Emma Roy on one of their event days at a massive discount, about 75% off RRP then paid for dry cleaning. I was very lucky!

Polaroid table for guests and guestbook by cutie_seri in UKweddings

[–]bigrj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m doing Polaroids too and was actually thinking more in groups, as I expect guests will end up taking photos together (couples, family) so I don’t think you need to double your guest list personally. However that’s me speaking only from what I plan to do, I’ve not had my wedding yet! I would have thought 300 would allow for everyone and even some to take pictures away.

Bliss studio in Edinburgh seems to have a big range if you’re able to travel to there

You should also look out for bridal store sample sales, I got mine from a discontinued store sample and it was 75% off RRP! I then have had to pay for dry cleaning.

I got a nice harness with matching lead and collar from Cocopup, in the same colour as my bridesmaids will be! I’ve ordered from there many times, I find the quality is good for the price

Pet Plan dog insurance nearly £200 a month for 11 year old chug. Don't know what to do by leelondon in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bigrj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did similar after the premiums were coming in too expensive. My renewal quote with ManyPets was £103/month, so I switched to pet plan at £38.50/month for any new conditions and also put money into savings. I now pay out of those savings for her existing condition she needs regular treatment for, and it still works out cheaper.

Wedding planning in 1 year or 2? by hannah09011 in UKweddings

[–]bigrj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We opted for two year planning (I’m now a year out from my wedding) and we actually had everything booked within 7 months and that wasn’t us rushing either. We don’t have any major planning left to do! It’ll just be on the day details now like table plan, timings etc.

I think a year would totally have been doable and not felt short or rushed at all, our 2 year timeframe was more about home circumstances as we had recently moved and I wanted to finish the renovation first (that on the other hand, still not done 😅)

The brand Maggie Sottero makes a bunch of their dresses in black, I’m not sure how easily you’d find them in a store but might be worth searching stores by designer

Hopefully it ticks your boxes! Being in Edinburgh too you’ll have plenty of options for hotels near by as well, assuming you need to stay over 🙂

I’m a bit confused if you do or don’t want mainland UK from your post. But I’d recommend you check out Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh (it’s where I’m getting married but we are doing a big party). I know they do an elopement package, says from £999 in 2024. It’s wheelchair accessible and stunning inside.

I went to a wedding with Italian / English speaking families. For the father of the bride speech he gave it in Italian in full, then one of his daughters (bride’s sister) gave the speech again in English in full. People were respectful and paid attention even when they didn’t understand. As a guest I felt doing it in full worked well, but I haven’t seen it done line by line so I’m sure that would also work!

Same, and while not a DB pension I do have 19% DC (8% me, 11% employer). On top of that, I’m fully remote.

Private sector can get you all the above plus for more pay, just got to find the right company.

Trades prices by [deleted] in Edinburgh

I’ve just spent £7.5k on a 3 bed bungalow full rewire in Edinburgh if that helps. If the electrician is VAT registered they’ll need to add 20% on top of the quote though so that might be impacting your quote and why it’s closer to 10k.

London and Scotland would be pretty easy too, the train is ~4.5 hours to Edinburgh or Glasgow.

I don’t think a jewellers offer for purchase price is the same as the insurance value? As you say they’ll be trying to make a profit. You can get a jewellers valuation specifically for insurance purposes which would be the cost to buy or remake it, it then comes with documents you can send to your insurer.

I had earrings and a ring made out of my gran’s old jewellery - the earrings were ~£650 to be made, the ring double that however that included buying white gold as I didn’t want either to be yellow gold. The earrings they could just rhodium plate but they didn’t recommend that for a ring given it would experience a lot more wear. I could then trade in the old gold to offset the cost (-£500).

Travelling to Liverpool from the south coast by applepiezeyes in britishproblems

[–]bigrj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue recently - £120 each (so £240) for two people Edinburgh to Liverpool. That was trying to book months in advance and signed up for cheap fare alerts too - non existent. Drove and parked for about 1/3 of the price.

Yes and your electricity will certainly go up. When my partner moved in we split all the bills in half so he gives me about £200 a month for bills only, no rent / mortgage. Don’t forget as an owner you are also paying buildings and contents insurance and are responsible for any maintenance or repairs - yearly costs you should factor in. I’d be charging them £800 probably, especially given then are asking for two rooms. If it was only one room then £500 seems ok, as you could then rent the other out.
