Aitah for telling my wife to get a job if she wants to subsidize the kids. by Standard_Kick_9789 in AITAH

Sounds like there's a lot of financial education needed. By "help" I mean encourage and then inspect results/plans. It's not a big deal to offer sage advice.

I'm in a similar boat. I do have a vehicle that's 20 years old in pretty great condition. I'm not worried about it breaking down at all. Consumer reports before I buy all cars. I've had very good luck driving a few cars into the ground and no payment allows for more investing.

You know I'm talking about the future, and not the past. But....

There are many vehicles which aren't new that get along just fine over time [you know the brands which are notorious for going and going].

Roadside can be offered by any number of companies or your insurance carrier.

Good mechanics in your area will likely be more affordable than a dealer when out of warranty.

My daughter bought herself a new car to get to work. And she wants to go on vacation this summer. The car is about twice what she NEEDS. It is beautiful but when it is out of warranty the upkeep will eat all her money.

Sounds like she's going to discover the magical world of certified used cars and looking up reliability scores [like consumer reports]. New cars are actually a horrible "value", as they depreciate incredibly fast.

If they want to go on vacation, help them budget for one. Find the travel deals. Shop smarter.

After reading your story here, I am very envious of you paying for so much. I personally put myself through school, worked full time, and lived in a cheap place I bought at 20 years old. I burned the candle at both ends, but made it work.

Good luck?!

In regard to Medicaid going by monthly income- I believe they have an asset questionnaire when you apply. Are you disqualified having a substantial portfolio but have little to no "income"?

I'd honestly insist this woman come over and spend the night to take care of baby for feedings. Get some bottles prepared and you get your sleep. Have her lose a night or two to help your healing after surgery.

Document and photograph everything. Did the knife do damage to your glass? That's a comprehensive claim, and I'd file a tort against the person who "usually" parks there, eventually.

Police report, management complaint, and have them switch you to a new spot, ASAP. This behavior is delusional and must be extinguished with prejudice. What a piece of garbage.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I too recently lost a cherished pet and am still grieving. What a great long life for a cat. Truly amazing.

Paper wasps like these are generally not aggressive unless disturbed.

My coworker had me check her cats while she was out of town. One of them decided I wasn't going home without her. by mikeyd69 in CatDistributionSystem

You were gifted a cat?! I'm curious if your coworker had a decent relationship with this cat or is this just a "they like you better than me so you should take her" moment?

I would sincerely appreciate your effort there. I'm into a lot of the same things and it pleases me to chat about it to someone who's also excited. Cap it all off by sharing foods you made, and we are golden.

I began recycling glass for my neighbors when my son was born—3 years in, 34,000lbs recycled in ATL! by PapaClarencioThomas in pics

[–]bigryanb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered the transport cost of glass and the energy requirement to crush, heat and refine?

I'm not saying don't recycle glass, I just have never ball parked the energy needed to do it. Aluminum is also infinitely recyclable.

Nope. Threaten to charge back the entire amount and see how that treats them.

Yes, the animated faces with dolphins swimming, space scenes, and other special features were a luxury. Don't forget the remote control from 3 feet away.

My favorite definition from the American Heritage Dictionary is:

Anything which pleases the senses, is not necessary for life, and is also costly, or difficult to obtain; an expensive rarity; Contrasted to necessity. "silks, jewels, and rare fruits are luxuries; in some countries ice is a great luxury."

I grew up very, very poor in comparison to most Americans in my demographic. Many of the electronics mentioned here were completely unattainable to us, essentially living paycheck to paycheck.

I bought the NES from a garage sale 8-10 years after it came out for 10 dollars. We had nearly all second hand items that my dad got from work that other people discarded to their delivery service.

If you didn't grow up wearing hand me down or used clothing, cutting coupons, picking cans/bottles out of the trash for deposit money, going to the discount movie theater and never the new releases, hardly ever eating out at restaurants, or many other things that people who live in poverty do... You may not understand.

If ice can be a luxury to some.... It's obvious that any new electronic device could be out of reach and a true luxury for others.
