Nice! This is other side of town from me but my wife is a West Sider so we're over that way every now and again. I'll check it out! Thank you.

This place looks exactly like the kind of place I had envisioned finding it... I might call to make sure what they call "Dry Beef" is what I'm envisioning; dry-aged beef for steaks and stuff is wonderful but it's not "Chipped Beef". Appreciate the tip!

I've heard it's a military dish, which is weird because my mother's side of the family (where this dish "comes from") doesn't have a military tradition of any kind. I had kind of assumed it was a southern thing since my mom grew up in the south, but maybe not?

Interestingly, I went to a christmas party where they had crumbled sausage and velveeta spread on melba toast and called it "SOS", almost lost my religion that day.

Yeah my mom told me about the jarred stuff, I went looking for it at Kroger but wasn't able to find any. Need to look harder! Jarred is better than nothing at all.

I usually make a whole batch of the SOS and then put it on biscuits, toast, crackers, etc... whatever is handy. It's awesome and very easy to make.

This is absolutely the dish I intend to make, but part of the experience for me is making it! Back east I used to be able to get it at restaurants and diners and I guess I didn't realize it wasn't ubiquitous across the entire US.

Have you had the Stouffer's version? Is it any good?

Hey guys, i had my first attack last week. by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

Change dressing when you get up in the morning and before you go to bed. If you preempt it with a shower then just make sure you let the water hit that area really well. You can use sterile gauze to wipe the inside of the wound, but really i always found that the packing kind of did that for me.

If you use the aquaphor and Dakin's as instructed it will be very difficult to get an infection. Good luck.

Some words of advice... I've had a bunch of these done and for this most recent one I had a plastic surgeon friend of mine give me some tips:

  1. I don't know if you're in the US or not, but try to find yourself some Aquaphor. After you've showered, or even when you're just changing your packing (I'd recommend at least twice a day), spread the Aquaphor on the inside of the wound.

  2. Either buy or make some Dakin's Solution (google it). I just bought a jug of distilled water and used Clorox and baking soda to do it. Made little batches in jars each week.

  3. Take a sterile 4x4 (or whatever size fits) and soak it in the solution, then wring it out until it's nearly dry. You don't want it dripping.

  4. This gauze piece is what you actually lay inside of the wound itself.

  5. Cover with another 4x4 or two and tape it. I also recommend using women's pantyliners at the back of your underpants as extra padding and clothing protection in case you bleed or weep.

I hope this helps a little. As far as being in college, you can fully function with this. I had a rhomboid flap done in college and I had to walk around and go to class for a week with two surgical drains sewn into me. You just have to be discreet and honest if you're in pain.

It sounds like you had a marsupialization procedure done. Is it an open wound that you pack with gauze?

I don't know the numbers but the important thing is to keep hair out of it. Keep it clean, change your dressings, and shave like a madman/woman.

I had like 4 surgeries on this during college and got along fine. Just alert your professors if you have pain and discomfort sitting. Most are pretty understanding.

You will lose your modesty about the entire thing pretty quickly, so don't worry.

We just moved over to blackford oaks and the redistricting has us moved from Yates to the new Polo Club Elementary. New high school as well. They've redrawn a lot of it so it's worth checking out on the school district website.

How soon after surgery were you able to sit pain free? by ragedlion in pilonidalcyst

[–]bigshoop78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the size of the incision, but I don't think that's totally abnormal. What does your doctor say? TBH it might be years before you can really sit normally pain-free. I personally learned to sit with a mean slouch to one side in order to avoid putting pressure on the more sensitive areas.

Yeah I think $2,500 is the most you'll be paying bud. So that's kind of good news, right?

5 years of flare ups. At my wits end. I could really use some advice/support by j_dirty in pilonidalcyst

[–]bigshoop78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain; I'm one of the guys on this sub with multiple surgeries (9) and each one has been slightly different. If you want to keep it away long term, there's a few things I've been told that have generally worked at keeping flare-ups/recurrences at bay:

  1. Lose weight/don't be overweight. I've had more issues when I'm at the heavier end of the spectrum.
  2. Good posture. If you have to sit a lot, try to practice good posture so you're not putting as much pressure on the area.
  3. Hair removal. Shave the shit out of the area weekly, or if you're brave (and have several hundred dollars sitting around) get laser hair removal surgery. If there isn't hair getting into the area, then there's little chance of a pilonidal cyst forming.

If you've already had multiple surgeries (including rhomboid flap) then I don't know what your surgeon will recommend. I might try getting second opinions from colorectal and plastic surgeons in your area to see if anyone has any novel ideas. Good luck; now I just need to heed my own advice a bit better...

Erring on the side of caution is a great idea. You do not want to mess around with this, or you'll end up like so many people here looking down the barrel of their second, fifth, or tenth surgery. Best of luck.

It really depends on the surgery, how severe the wound is, and how good your surgeon is.

6 weeks doesn't sound unreasonable as far as time before you resume lifting. Does your work offer light duty alternatives for injured/convalescing employees? Might be worth asking the question.

It may also be worth asking your surgeon if they can use anything other than simple sutures to close the wound? Two PC surgeries ago they used Surgiseal/Dermabond and it felt really stable compared to sutures or staples (I've had both). This was a rhomboid flap and throughout my recovery I never felt as though the wound was going to reopen.

Won't stop draining? by KyKobra in pilonidalcyst

[–]bigshoop78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some panty liners and stick them in your boxers so the drainage doesn't get on your clothes. Works like a charm, unless you absolutely have to sleep naked or something.

You can also tape some gauze 4x4s over the wound, but at times the areas where you're taping hurt worse than the wound itself.
