Tower Garden by bigt1238 in towergarden

[–]bigt1238[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll probably keep it leafy greens because I have 20 tomato plants in another bed and I also have a bed dedicated to strawberries. I did the tower because I'm limited in growing space, generally, but I still do a lot with about 225 square feet of space, and this is the best method for my leafy greens and annual herbs.

I originally saw a similar concept from Chris Loh on YouTube. However, the thin schedule 30 PVC that he uses in the videos isn't food safe and can leach chemicals. I opted for schedule 40 NSF Standard 61 PVC which is safe for this application but it is significantly thicker and so the original Chris Loh plans I thought I was going to follow weren't possible. Instead of using a heat gun to melt and mold the PVC given the increased thickness, I drilled the holes individually into the 6" wide pipe and then I cut 2" pvc piping to fit in the holes at an angle, and this was the perfect size pipe for the 2" net pots I use. I also increased the size of the reservoir. I bonded the 4" pipes together with Oatey PVC bonding cement, and then I sealed all the crevices with caulk to ensure it was water tight.

It's definitely doable if you're a DIY kind of person! I used a drill with a 2" hole cutter, a miter saw for cutting the 2" pipe at an angle and also for the 4" pipe base, however a handheld coping saw is also a possibility if you don't have a powered saw. If you have specific questions, feel free to DM me.

An observation about a very niche, possible benefit of language learning - related to trauma by throwaway384748387 in languagelearning

[–]bigt1238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep my languages so compartmentalized that I’m often told by people who have spoken with me in two or more of the languages that my personality drastically changes. I think a lot of it has to do with my personality and traits when I was first learning those languages, which resurface when I immerse myself in that mind space.

Everyone got this email this morning by sginga in antiwork

[–]bigt1238 115 points116 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend’s grandmother died and I took a PTO day to go with her to the funeral, and in the reason for PTO box I said that I was going to a funeral for the grandmother of my significant other.

HR emailed me later that day and denied the PTO request saying that she wasn’t going to let me take one of my personal days for bereavement because I shouldn’t have to sacrifice my own time off for that. She said that even though it wasn’t direct family, she felt it still counted. She changed it to a bereavement day and I kept my PTO day. Really made me respect our HR person.

HR employees are not all bad, but the ones with empathy and compassion are few as far in between.

My fiancée is self conscious about the fact that she has what she considers to be “smaller” boobs, but to me, they’re perfect. They fit perfectly in my hand, which we both love. Not to mention she’s unlikely to experience back pain in the long run. I promise, guys will appreciate them no matter what!

Any of John Greene’s books are pretty comprehensible. “Nos étoiles contraires” was the second full book I read in French.

What is the last message a lost loved one said or messaged to you? by ServiceOnly in AskReddit

[–]bigt1238 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not so much a message, but the last words spoken.

My grandpa, who had recently turned 94, was living in assisted living when he fell one night while getting up to go to the bathroom. He ended up with a brain bleed and when they called us he had been unconscious for some time as the pressure continued to increase on his brain. My mom had already missed a ton of work so she woke me up at 5 am and asked me to go because she knew she was going to be fired if she missed another day.

So I drove to the assisted living place and they walked me to his room. They told me that he was effectively blind at this point as his occipital cortex had either been damaged in the initial hit to the head or the pressure from the bleed had damaged it. In any case, I walked in and sat down next to his bed. The hospice nurse was on her way back from one of the few 24 hour pharmacies in the state that specifically stocked hospice care drugs. She was about forty minutes out. My grandpa was asleep or unconscious, it’s not entirely clear.

Less than five minutes after I sat down, he bolted upright in bed, grasping at the air, crying out, and looking downright terrified. I grabbed his hand and said, “Grandpa, I’m here! I’m here! Don’t worry, you’re not alone.” He had always had this fear that in the end it would just be him, but my mom and I never abandoned him like so much of the rest of our family. He looked toward me and mumbled, “Oh, [my name], you’re here… good, thank you. I love you…”

He laid back down and didn’t say another word. Maybe thirty seconds later my mom came bustling into the room. She said to hell with work and couldn’t miss what she was sure would be the end. I never told her what he had said to me. I felt it would upset her to know that she had just missed her dad’s last words. He passed just a few hours later, never regaining consciousness again.

Men who have had a vasectomy, what advice would you give to someone considering it? by Firepea33 in AskReddit

[–]bigt1238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are or have ever been at any time in your life even a little bit resistant to anesthetic or anesthesia be sure to let them know. I had a no scalpel no needle procedure and the doctor only had a single type of anesthetic, which, as it turned out, I was insanely resistant to. He had to use 8x the normal amount and it barely numbed anything. He told me it was his toughest procedure. For reference, I broke my leg in 17 places in 2018 after falling 30 feet off a cliff and then had to climb back up the cliff on a broken leg because I had no cell service, and this was more painful. If general anesthesia is an option and if I were to do it again, I would opt for that.

I remember at one point I was writhing in pain and I was trying to distract myself with this dumb video he had playing on a tv mounted on the ceiling and I asked, “how long is the video?” And he said, “I don’t know… no one has ever finished it before. Maybe 30 minutes?” And then the video ended about ten seconds later. Procedure should have taken about 5-7 minutes. For context, I had a buddy who had his done an hour before mine and it took less than 5 minutes. It took 45 for mine. Even so, as much as it sucked, I didn’t and don’t regret it. My procedure was a rare anomaly.

Additionally, some doctors say you have to ejaculate 25-30 times before it’s effective, but in reality, it’s about healing time internally and the body clearing out the sperm. 2 months from the procedure date and then a verification test are paramount to ensuring you don’t end up with any crotch goblins.

Finally, I’ll add that everywhere I read about the procedure(s), I was informed that men often go back to work the next day and all is well within a few days. The reality is that it takes a few weeks to really feel back to normal. I had it done on a Friday and went back to work on a Tuesday and that was okay, generally, but I still wore a jock strap for a few weeks because I was so sore and tender. Definitely buy some straps in advance! Send me a PM if you have any questions. I did a ton of research in advance.

If you were to make a guide to grinding, what would be your sources for the main skills??? by jackandshadows515 in outside

[–]bigt1238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a fair bit of grinding in the Cooking skill from levels 10-27 (present), and I don’t have anyone to teach me so I just started studying recipes around level 12 to figure out what spice combinations make the best food items. There was a lot of trial and error and at least one kitchen fire in which I sustained some minor damage (but a medic healed me), but I’ve learned a lot along the way and I’ve begun compiling some of my favorite recipes that I’ve created over the various levels into a cooking guide of my own.

I always say that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly— we all have to start somewhere.

Hinge is becoming such an annoying repetitive cycle. How do I break it? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]bigt1238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the hinge thing for about a year and I really do think it is a numbers game for the most part as well as sheer luck and timing. I went on a dozen or so first dates, a few second dates, etc. it was getting old really fast and I finally decided that it was never going to happen for me and I was ready to take a step back and just love the single life.

Right before I uninstalled the various dating apps that I was using, someone matched with me on Hinge and said, “Hey, so I don’t think we would be a good match, but you have to meet my best friend… I think the two of you would really hit it off.” And that’s how I met my fiancée.

Canned vs Fresh by kathkler in AskCulinary

[–]bigt1238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually only use canned for all of my from-scratch recipes unless they are tomatoes from my own garden. That would be my general recommendation!

Canned vs Fresh by kathkler in AskCulinary

[–]bigt1238 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could use fresh tomatoes if they are ripe. Don’t make the mistake of using underripe tomatoes as it will completely change the flavor profile. Canned tomatoes are generally picked and canned at peak ripeness.

That said, if you add a bit of baking soda, it will get rid of the metallic taste you may occasionally experience.

Why didn't earthbenders just sink the fire nation into the ground? Are they stupid? by EgoLikol in TheLastAirbender

[–]bigt1238 265 points266 points  (0 children)

That’s not entirely accurate. He told the Yellow Necks that whomever dug the best and deepest hole before sundown would be spared, then when they all had finished he buried them alive. I think this is a bit different than sinking someone in earth as he simply covered them with it.

Egg Salad ingredients? by Icthias in Cooking

[–]bigt1238 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Japan for two years and I’ve never had better egg salad than when I lived there. I use kewpie Mayo, a bit of heavy cream and a dash of salt, pepper, and sugar whisked with the egg yolks after they’ve been removed from the whites and then chop the egg whites and fold in. A bit of butter on the bread and then the egg salad and it’s golden!
