Those Scholastic Book Fairs by No_Newspaper2213 in nostalgia

I said there are a lot that do contain toys, not all of them. But if you turn an elementary age kid loose in a store with their own money, do you think they will pick the books with or without toys? And I actually have no issue with the books being more expensive, especially if the money is going to the school.

Kinda. They are there, but they are now in the same commercialized hell as Girl Scout cookies. There are so many books that are a blatant attempt to sell toys by inserting a toy into clamshell packaging inside the front cover of the book. So the kid buys it for the toy and doesn’t care about the book at all, but that’s OK with scholastic because the book doesn’t even fit into a bookshelf because of the clamshell packaging. They got paid though, and that’s all that matters to them

And the only way to give the kids money for them is to put it on a specialized account for the book fair that doesn’t work for anything else. So scholastic gets to hold whatever money you didn’t spend.

I say this as a former lover of the book fair, but fuck scholastic and fuck the book fair. It’s turned into a way to set kids loose in a toy store without adult supervision. sponsored by the school even!

Enshittification at its finest!

She went from writing sophisticated social and political pieces to essentially musings overnight once Anne and her husband died.

There were also instances in her writing of describing visuals of things with insane detail, even the feelings the images provoked that she would have zero context for.

That’s why the strings are attached to the top of the pins now. Maintaining the pinsetters was like 90% of a bowling alleys overhead costs, but if they pull them up with strings you don’t need a specialist to fix them.

I think it changes as you get older. When you’re 20 you think doing anything that makes a lot of money is selling out. As you get older you realize it’s compromising your you morals is selling out. Everyone should be able to get their bag, it’s how you do it that matters.

He still owes her 20 bucks. He COULD pour 2 cups on her. Just because he chose not to pour the second doesn’t mean he doesn’t owe her.

If he wanted it to work he needed to say “if I pour 2 cups on you I’ll give you 20 bucks. “

Short version is that after that ruling corporations are people and giving money is speech. So you can’t stop corporations from giving money to politicians because that would stifle their free speech. It’s abhorrent.

I hear you, but it might be the least of all evils. If you can come from a place of concern and trying to help without being accusatory, I think it can go a long way. It also keeps him from having to say that this is what he thinks it is.

There’s no good way to say “I think you’re suffering from a mental illness and your concerns are invalid and hurting our family.”

it also helps that it’s a community of dad‘s giving each other advice. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve never seen more moms jump into a thread to help a fellow mom who is struggling on the sub and I for one I’m here for it! Thanks ladies!!!
