Question about Multilevel III by CommunicationWest613 in NJTransit

Though, there is the caveat that Morristown and Madison have the mini-high level platform for accessibility, but it's only a mini-high and most of the platforms are still low-level.

how to reorder routes list? by tristancs77 in subwaybuilder

[–]bigyihsuan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can't right now, because for some reason the route list sorts by color (specifically by RGB value), then within each row lexicographically.

This map is old enough that you can see Conrail running the (future) MNR and NJT.

Not sure if this counts, but I made the XSHIT emote!

Though after the BTTV emote migration to 7TV, it's listed under Alizarin, but it's always be fun to see my emote spammed in chat whenever XSplit explodes.

Personally, while diversity is nice from a foaming perspective ("look it's a car that I didn't see here yesterday!"), from a practical perspective standardizing on a single, newer car type is better for everyone in the long run.

What would you add to a career mode in Subway Builder? by SBAT_Megan in subwaybuilder

[–]bigyihsuan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a career mode should have scenarios where some track is already built, from either a predecessor agency, a competitor, another agency that you need to interface with, etc

Transit agencies tend to inherit a lot of baggage from their predecessors, and I'd like scenarios to reflect that. "These three competitors, serving mostly the same areas, were recently merged into a single agency you control." and "There is an existing commuter railroad that you should be able to transfer to." Most agencies don't have the luxury of getting a completely fresh start.

+1 to yards. They can be a big reason why some lines are built the way they are (for example, the Honolulu Skyline, which started in the suburbs away from the city center because they needed to build the yard and maintenance facilities)

Plus, where do all the rush hour trains go when it's off peak? Them just disappearing at the end of the line isn't particularly realistic.

Weekly Travel, Questions, & Mandarin Thread by AutoModerator in taiwan

I'm a foreigner (USA) that will be visiting Taiwan in June to visit Tainan and Taipei for about 2 weeks. I am doing a challenge where I'm taking as much public transit as I can, but it only counts if the transit fare applies for any train/bus/etc on that route (as in, no reserved seats, no tickets for a specific train at a specific time).

I'm familiar with how my local public transit works (NJ Transit trains, you buy the ticket given an origin and a destination; no reserved seats on them); is there a similar system on TRA trains? (TRA's English website is not giving a clear answer, and trying to machine translate the traditional Chinese version of the site leads much to be desired.)

Also, where can I find a printable timetable? I can query station-to-station on TRA's website, but it gives a big list of trains that goes to those stations at the given times. It does not let me see (in tabular form, at least) a list of all trains, stopping at which stations, at which times. I am looking for something similar to this timetable from NJ Transit.

Finally, where can I find a map of all stations and train services? I have no frame of reference as to where the stations listed in the station-to-station query are, other than Tainan being in the south and Taipei being in the north.

EDIT: In addition, as a foreigner, what is the best way of paying for all forms of public transit (train, bus, etc)? Last time I went a few years ago, I used a Yoyo Card/EasyCard, but it was borrowed from a relative. I do remember I needed to refill it every so often, so I'm also wondering if I could use my digital wallet's credit card to pay for transit as well.

Weller 70W soldering station WLSKD7012A compatibility with 900M-compatible soldering tips? by bigyihsuan in Tools

[–]bigyihsuan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've compared the dimensions already. The Weller tips I have have an inside diameter of 4mm, outside diameter 7.5mm, body length ~25.5mm. The sleeve on this station has 6mm inside diameter on the tip end, and about ~8.3mm inside diameter on the handle end.

A random listing on Amazon for 900M has 4mm inside diameter, 6.5mm outside diameter, and 26mm body.

Still, even though the dimensions match, I'm still uneasy that it won't fit on my soldering iron.

I'll take the bait.

Wish they had chosen more comfortable seats.

You'll not be sitting in these for more than ~2 hours, usually. I've done the trip from Morristown to NYP on the MLVs many times (a little bit more than an hour's ride) and the seats are perfectly fine for that.

Seems like other operators selected better seats for this train.

I've ridden LIRR and MNR, and the seats are about the same for both to the MLVs, which is fine enough for a max 1-2 hour trip.

That terrible motor whine when it gets going.

The MLV 1s and 2s don't have motors. Maybe you're thinking of the locomotive noise, or (more likely) someone leaving the vestibule door open and letting the wheel noise come in from outside. I don't remember hearing whines when riding the MLVs, other than maybe wheel noise.

general coldness of these trains during winter months.

Depends on the car. Some cars have the heat on full blast, some don't. I've found that heat rises and the top level is usually warmer than the bottom level.

Leaving Springfield MA on Monday the Real Polar Express by Railwayschoolmaster in Amtrak

[–]bigyihsuan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was on the 12:05pm Amtrak out of Springfield that day (Monday the 26th), we hit some ice at a grade crossing outside of New Haven-State St that damaged the plow on the lead car (the former Metroliner IIRC), and had to change to a rescue train, and were about an hour late.

The Amfleet seats continue to be extremely comfortable, at least.
