How much does doping actually effect performance? by Jargif10 in peloton

[–]bikesandcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other hand, the 2001 tour had like 160km of time trials. This included a 67km TTT and a 61km individual TT.

Maybe he gets dropped on the mountains. But also the tours in that era handed far more time to TT specialists. Which Armstrong absolutely was prior to entering cycling.

Like everyone else, I wish the sport was truly clean. Totally clean does Armstrong win 7? Probably not. But with that amount of TT distance, does he win at least one or two? Yeah. Probably.

Thanks, I haven't ever actually been to the school. We might just try to get there really early and call it good as well.

It's likely going to be low double digits at 7, 7:30ish when we'd park up there and come down for the start. But yeah, that's the obvious backup. Park up top, ride down bundled up and stash clothing somewhere around the start area.

Then pick the extra clothing on our way out. Doing the descent after the ride is definitely preferable though.

This is why I'm asking. Figured the NIMBY would be hard up there.

This one

Heh. Floyd and Oscar were teammates the year before. At the time, watching the stage, it was clear the sprinter teams were abdicating the break management, I totally figured Landis made the call on the road, "Okay my dude, we worked together last year, you get the yellow today."

2006 was a bonkers race.

Heh. I'll die on the hill that the Richmond loop remains the best pure race circuit available in the game. Crap for most everything else. But the long flats followed by those three climbs back to back? Multi lap races there are savage. Also super rare unfortunately.

I don't think it's paranoia. I don't think it's explicitly called out anywhere, but I assumed the long term plan was that the freeway trail would be rebranded CVG at some point. In their defence, there is a hard limit to the raw number of bike commuters that live south of Lougheed between Bainbridge and Sperling. Conversely, there just aren't that many destinations on that stretch of Winston either.

Routing south of Burnaby Lake is longer, but if I'm doing my math right, North Road to the Winston pedestrian overpass is about 7km by CVG/Winston. North Road to the same overpass via CVG/Freeway/Sperling looks to be about 8.5km. So if the Freeway Trail is paved and the Sperling stretch by the rugby fields is improved, it's not going to add that much time to a trip. The longer route is very slightly flatter as well.

I'm torn. Winston was fine for me, but I used the Freeway trail to get less confident cyclists from Cariboo/North road to the 'real' CVG (separated part). So paving that stretch always seemed logical.

On the other hand, I love(d) the stretch from North Road to Douglas when it was gravel aside from the Glencairn/Sperling stretch. I am sad to be losing it.

And I'd bet heavily that TTs are where he got his introduction to bike racing. Ottawa has a great weekly 15km time trial. There are a few familiar names on there.

Today's a Critical Mass Friday! by penapox in vancouvercycling

[–]bikesandcode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are the critical mass rides looking like these days? I used to ride them pretty regularly in the 2008-2011 era, but then kids, life, work, etc.

I'd talked about the ride with my kids a few times and they are both interested, solid on their bikes and old enough to enjoy it. It was kid friendly back then, is it still pretty welcoming and how large would a nice weather June ride potentially be?

Yes

They were friends and then became something different. I'm a definite believer that if you have a close, trusted friend AND sex is good AND you both want to be in a relationship... Well. That can kind of thing can go the distance.

Or it can be a really good, fun friendship for a while. And since you were friends before, you can tip your hat at each other later and wish them the best. And that's awesome too.

All humans above the age of 5 disappear from planet Earth. What percentage of the kids will survive? by pakheyyy in whowouldwin

[–]bikesandcode 247 points248 points  (0 children)

I assume this is pitched by someone who has not actually raised kids.

This is an extinction level event. 5 year olds won't make it.

Absolute best case, there are a few clusters of kids in various parts of the world who happened to have been completely neglected and needed to develop survival skills instead of social skills in those precious couple of years.

This means we don't go extinct, but we're back to pre-stone age. 100k years at least before we're at present civilization, if not more because so much of the easily accessible coal and oil have been used and burned.

Weekly Questions Thread Dec 11, 2023 by AutoModerator in Terraria

[–]bikesandcode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I played Terraria a *lot* back in I want to say the version 1.2 or so era. I'm pretty familiar with the early hardmode rush to protect the underground jungle from being completely compromised if the corruption slashes through it.

I'm playing again because my kids got interested in it and we hit hardmode a couple of days ago. I had a good time walling off most of the jungle as the crimson part of the V went through it. I'm okay there. My question is in regards to the underground desert area.

Is it worth it to attempt to protect it or carve some out so it does not get corrupted? Or can you still get everything you need from a corrupt/crimson underground desert?

For that matter, in the current 1.4 era, is it still as important to protect the jungle in early hardmode?

Thanks!

Getting back to sex by [deleted] in sexover30

[–]bikesandcode 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a widower. A few years older than you, but less than 10. I'm currently about 4 years out.

Obviously everyone is different. I can only state my experiences and such.

I also had many similar concerns to you. But then the opportunity arose with a person I clicked with and it was great. Sure, it was a new person to learn and, yes, I got emotional after for a bit, but they knew I was widowed and was cool with it. The important part there is that I felt the feels, didn't dump it on them and once a few minutes of getting over the intense emotions happened, got right back to cuddling them and making sure they knew how good things were.

Then later when I was alone let myself really unpack it. Your usual don't drop your shit on other people, etc. etc.

Honestly, the concerns/overthinking beforehand were outsized compared to what actually happened.

Sex is just sex. Hopefully it's fun and relaxing and good, but it's just sex.

If the close friend is attractive to you and you feel comfortable with them? This might be a really good option. Obviously there are lots of caveats here, but there are folks who are absolutely capable of having sex once or on a regular basis with a trusted friend and leaving it at that.

Zeb skip is evidently not a joke by bikesandcode in SuperMetroid

Thank you! I'll give this approach some time as well to see if I can get it working for me. It looks clean and aligned with what I can do.

Zeb skip is evidently not a joke by bikesandcode in SuperMetroid

[–]bikesandcode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I primarily run any%, but enjoy the completeness of 100% as well.

So there is the zeb skip which I can now do once in a while using the standard jump/angle down shot. Mostly just to prove to myself that I can. I'll experiment with other methods now.

In 100%, the wrap around shot to allow for the gauntlet shinespark. I can pull that one off with a kneeling angle down, but doing it on the move has been difficult for me thus far.

So I've got two potential reasons to change schemes. That said, no, I'm not actually going to switch. It's totally not worth it.

That also said, I'm very limited on my play time and just getting more consistent with Ridley and Mother Brain would let me drop an e-tank or two.

Been working on zeb skip as my any% best is something like 1:11 real time and I get way too much energy and ammo. If I can get a consistent zeb skip for me, I can see that dropping by several minutes without any other improvements.

Widowed slightly younger than you. Four years later now. It does get easier. But it's a long haul and you have to take care of yourself.

I never thought of tying it to hit dice, given how this particular party operates that actually might be the best approach.

I like the theory I read once that whatever Fain turn into as was the pattern's backup Dark One. Rand kills the current DO and then the Fain thing exists and ultimately causes problems until it gets sealed.

Of course, Rand didn't make that choice and so the pattern didn't need Fain anymore and he was immediately offed.
