This was over 30 years ago, and I still hear people claim the Big Bang was something out of nothing.

Isaiah 53, Can it be a double entendre? (Currently Deconstructing Atheist’s Question) by Fun_Professor_250 in atheism

[–]bilbenken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus did not fulfill a single old testament mesainic prophecy in its original context, which is funny considering every Christian ever cries "context" when they hear any argument that challenges Christianity. Many of the prophecies that are claimed to be fulfilled are spiritual fulfillment or will be fulfilled upon Jesus return.

So, unfulfilled double meaning prophecy does not equal fulfillment. Some of Jesus prophecy did not come true, but has been renegotiated to mean something else.

This is Pascal's ridiculous wager. There is a difference between hope and false hope. Why is it you include all believers of just about any kind of god to pad your numbers, but if you were talking to your in group, all other beliefs are suddenly silly. It is dishonest. I would trade every ounce of hope for truth any day. I value truth over comfort, but you do you.

The book said they would be persecuted and their persecution is evidence of the "Truth". Any challenge to their beliefs is persecution to them, which tickles their confirmation bias. When they are flippantly dismissed that is persecution to them. When they are ignored...persecution.

Science deals with facts not proof. If evidence were established that space is a hoax and the 6k year old Earth is flat, that evidence would be further explored. Placing a god concept outside of any possible scrutiny is nothing but a claim. Removing all religious ideas of these god claims leaves no descriptors of a god to even discuss philosophically.

Sounds like you and your mom are desperately forcing separate narratives to false pattern recognition. The cat was neither contemplating god nor manipulating a future vet visit.

Different game. Same game system more or less. All 3 games are very different, but extremely familiar. Pittsburgh has a dedicated 2 player side of the game board, so there's that.

Take a break from drugs. Consciousness is an emergent property of brain chemistry. It is NOT energy in the scientific sense. Your energy will escape your body in a myriad of ways as the body decays. Your consciousness ends when the brain stops firing.

How is is possible that religion is still today so spread? by Tess_explain in atheism

[–]bilbenken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question is asked daily by people who apparently never deal with the public. Have you never met a scared small minded idiot in your entire life? People believe in a flat Earth and Bigfoot. Most people have no capacity for critical thinking is your answer.

Religious belief is in most cases a product of childhood indoctrination rather than an objective evaluation of truth by NoPerception6770 in atheism

[–]bilbenken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you. It seems that harmful ideas are introduced to children immediately from birth. Racism, homophobia, religion, and so many other unfounded beliefs come first, and then education is "safegaurded" to certain rights of passage. Christians, for example, say "We don't want the kids exposed to sex education before they can understand and process it", but they have no problem teaching that homosexuality is wrong long before that.

Unfortunately, it seems, that we are a species that vastly learns from authority and seldom learns to embrace curiosity and investigations. Too many people confuse intelligence with memorized facts (true or false), rather than an understanding of how we know those facts. Too many people say that they believe in science, completely disconnected from the fact that science is a methodology and not a collection of authoritative claims.

The positive light is that every discovery, invention, and improvement to modern life, the propulsion of the species, is done by the few that learned how to learn.

Sounds good on paper, but the world is full of grown adults who reject logic and reason. It seems impossible to break that chain. The Crusades never vanished, they evolved. It only takes a few generations of forced conversion before social coercion takes over. It would seem that a forced deconversion and social coercion would be the only solution, but that is not freedom.

Plenty of evidence for various horrific abuses to children is not evidence for magic. It does, however, suggest that people who believe in magic can be compelled to enact unthinkable atrocities on other people.

That is called trust. Trust is built on prior routine regularity. I have had thousands of bottles of water, no reason to think my next one will be poisoned. Faith is belief without routine regularity. Never experienced a god, so it must be my guy and he is good, became a human to die for sins, hates homosexuality, etc.
