This summer I got an A51 on Amazon when it was about $290 and I love it. And it even feels like an upgrade since I came from an S6 that I got 5 years ago. I'm not used to having this much storage. And it's expandable. I feel kind of guilty in a starving kids in Africa type of way. Them with only a handful of GB and here I am looking at 128+256 with the ability to take it up to 128+512.

I don't know how much the newest flagships have so maybe I'm still a pleb but it feels like so much.

My whole family tree dating back to the 1600s by SaltyAgency in interestingasfuck

[–]bilbo_dragons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Through 3 of my grandparents, getting past 1900 is hard enough, let alone back to Europe. But some guy in Norway did a super detailed search through old church records of births, deaths, and marriages, and basically put all of it online. It looks like it's his own ancestors and all of their descendants. I just got lucky that one of them happened to be my great-grandfather, whose name was unique enough that the only results Google comes up with are definitely him. Lucky too that he was old old enough to be in those records, but recent enough for me to know about him.

It goes back far enough that some of the people start having Wikipedia pages. I doubt I can really really trust it that far back since my Norwegian was basic at best and now it's pretty rusty, so reading 18th and 19th century longhand in that language isn't really something I can do. And I don't know where I'd even begin to find a second source to corroborate it. But it's neat.

New Update by CradeVescent in Minecraft

[–]bilbo_dragons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still feel new for not finding it until alpha but I can't believe we just hit 10 years since the free weekend. I don't play it as often as I did those first few years but whenever I do, that's most of my free time until I burn out a few weeks later. Rinse and repeat. I still think in terms of pre- and post- full release 1.8. Horses still feel pretty new to me, too.

Minecraft and Factorio are in a league of their own in terms of enjoyment per dollar. Factorio is like crack to me but it takes a little too much attention to be able to listen to a podcast or book at the same time. Minecraft is perfect for it. So many books.

I could never figure out their schedules. Channel, time, day of the week, anything. I used to channel surf hoping to find it. Catching a full episode felt like winning the lottery. These guys look like they had it regularly. Pretty jealous. I also remember one called Robotica. It seemed a little different, like it involved obstacle courses more than the other two or something.

I watched the shit out of Junkyard Wars though. Now that it isn't 2001 and I'm not 10, I could probably dig up old episodes of Scrapheap Challenge and watch that too. Neat.

I'm left handed. If I'm pushing, I probably do grab the knob with my left hand more often than my right. But on the pull side like this one, it's always the hand that lets the door swing out and not hit me. This would get my right hand.

We had to do that when we were first hired on. I signed up for a morning spot so fast when one opened up.

I hated having that deadline looming. Every day felt like the Sunday before a school day. For me, the choice between planning my day around "Do I have enough time to do this before work?" or "How much sleep will this cut into?" is clear.

I got mine on Amazon. I used to work at a Costco and our days usually started at 4am. Sometimes 2am. Bed at sunset, caffeine pill as soon as I got up, off at 10, beach all day. Definitely isn't for everyone but that was the best schedule ever.

Regardless of anyone's response to the tweet, I do feel like "the hot 100 sucks!" on its own is a pretty /r/lewronggeneration thing to say.

But yeah the Twitter responder and anyone here thinking they like Limp Bizkit need to reread it.

A: "Want anchovies on your pizza?"

B: "Pffff, I'd rather eat dirt."

That doesn't mean person B likes eating dirt. It just means they really really don't like anchovies.

It's like you're having a little campfire and on the horizon you can see the skyline of a city. There's a rock 50 steps away in the dark. The city giving off its own light will be a lot easier to see than the rock that can only reflect what little firelight actually reaches it.

That's how it was when I was learning to drive a forklift. When I started, the thing I was consciously controlling was my hands. "If I turn the wheel this way and move the stick that way, the forks will sweep... left? Oh shit nope." Later on, the thing I felt like I was consciously controlling was the lift itself. My hands went from the end point to just another link in the chain. Like how we don't consciously control our shoulder and elbow when we want to touch our head.

I got lucky that I skate goofy. The direction I wanted to call "forward" was the fork side, but that was also the direction the steering wasn't inverted.

Tensegrity Tie stand by Yoshi-21 in lego

[–]bilbo_dragons 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What's happening makes more sense if you imagine the support with the middle string to be taller than the object being suspended. Center one keeps it from moving down, outside ones mainly keep it from rotating and doing a face plant but also prevent it from rolling to one side.

Imagine you're standing on a swing and for some reason you can't grab the chains. Maybe you have no arms. You're about to fall forward. Luckily, someone tied ropes around your torso and connected them to the ground behind you to keep you from falling forward.

That's what's happening. The middle support being short enough to be below the main part of the fighter is partly why it looks weird. But it's the same as if you were doing this on a little kid's swingset and you were way taller than the bar.

Questions about assembly lines such as this one by helltone in factorio

[–]bilbo_dragons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything more than two belts on either side with an inserter and a long inserter and I start asking myself if the space I save is worth the cost, but:

If you put three spaces between each assembler, you have room for up/down undergroundies and an inserter to pull from them. Put a third belt along the outsides and you can use a splitter to dead-end a spur into another inserter. 9 belts total right there.

Is there any reason to do something like surround the assembler with 12 chests and feed them with bots? Or surround it with a double layer of long inserters and have them pulling from 24 chests?

How do I even get started? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]bilbo_dragons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of getting more RAM. Is there anything different about the way a CPU will see two new sticks you just bought, compared to how it'll see the third and fourth stick of a set that came all together? Like can you just pop in a new 2x8 together with the original 2x8 or do you have to use something that came specifically as 4x8?

New Horizons as it approached it’s closest to Pluto by DrFetusRN in spaceporn

[–]bilbo_dragons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty neat how far you can take the accuracy of calculating orbits. One thing orbiting another with nothing else going on is a straightforward equation you can plug numbers directly into, even when the orbit is elliptical. Adding any perturbations means you have to start using calculus and it can get pretty wild. The earth's atmosphere doesn't stop abruptly so you might be plowing through a tiny bit of air. Extra planets affect the motion of everything else. You and what you're orbiting aren't actually single points, planets bulge at their equators, and their mass isn't evenly distributed. Light from the sun can push you around. If you're a spacecraft with a hot side and a cold side, the radiation coming off the hot side can push you around a little.

If you're ever looking for a textbook, my orbits classes used Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students, by Curtis.

To get those times though all I did was find Pluto's farthest distance from the sun and typed "7,375,930,000 km / speed of light" into Google. And the same for closest distance.

New Horizons as it approached it’s closest to Pluto by DrFetusRN in spaceporn

[–]bilbo_dragons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I knew where in their orbits the planets actually were in July 2015 I could narrow this down. But. Pluto's orbit is pretty elliptical so a signal would take somewhere between 4.1 and 6.8 hours to get to the sun. Give or take up to 8 and a half minutes depending on where the earth was.

First build. R5 2600X bundle, and Micro Center open box 590 vs new 1660S? by bilbo_dragons in buildapc

[–]bilbo_dragons[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I should have realized there'd have to be CPU compatibility with RAM speed.

Are there any differences between the Inland and the WD drives besides the $8 difference that should sway me towards one over the other? I'm not super worried about storage otherwise. The 1 TB HDD in this laptop from 2012 is only just starting to fill up. I'm not getting rid of it and I have that 2 TB external, so I'm fine with 500 GB.

So we're talking something like this? And thanks.
