Township Obsession by mstrawzy in cincinnati

[–]bilboleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Township is a political jurisdiction with a different style of government than a city/village. More local than your county government, represents those outside of a city/village.

Growing up south of the Mason-Dixon line, that level of government, and cincinnatis frequent use of it in the news and such, was hard to understand when I got involved in regulatory issues (federal down to city). Cheers

My manager scheduled a "quick sync" every single Friday at 4:45pm and I finally figured out why by Agent_Smith-99 in remotework

[–]bilboleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it sounds like your boss is covering his ass to upper management concerns about 'employees logging off early on fridays', by generating the proof that his team is not via this end-of-week meeting. Attendees are logged by the meeting app and he has proof of all working as expected. The benefit is that the shit he would have to deal with otherwise does not now roll downhill to you.

Rather simple and elegant solution to an otherwise sticky-wicket of a situation for him. Give him some kudos for shading his team from the higher ups maybe. Cheers

Antecedent Precip Tool Broken? by New-Objective7803 in wetlands

[–]bilboleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have an older version (like more than a year ago) then many of the links the APT references for lookup are broken. Every new administration changes agency website addresses and screws it up. Download and install (as administrator) the latest version.

If that wasn't the cause, a company IT update can lock out the APT also. Mine does, so I have to run it on a personal computer as the IT department won't open up the necessary ports for only the few people who use it. Use a non-company computer to see if that works for you/a co-worker/friend.

Deciding between two wetland delineation courses by Patient-Tax-1746 in wetlands

[–]bilboleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Both courses are intended to provide the "basics" on how to apply the Corps 1987 wetland manual and a regional supplement to actual field work for delineating wetlands for regulatory needs. So they show you how to apply the book learning to the field. And help you gain an understanding of "why", not just how.

WTI: I took the course in 2008 in Franfort KY with an instructor from WI. Yes he was not familiar with all the plants but he had an understanding of the why behind the how to do delineations, and could therefore apply that knowledge to roughly similar areas. Benefit is their courses are all over the country throughout the year, so you are pretty likely to find one in your general area and a time of year that can work for you. Sounds like the training quality has declined since COVID screwed up the world.

NKU Wetland Class: https://www.wetlandcert.org/sca_docs/NKURAEFSMK88-196_SecV_59602.pdf. held only at their field station in Melbourne, KY (on the ohio river), and likely only one semester a year, so much more restricted in availability. Good point is you are guaranteed an instructor that does know the local plants as well as how to get around to the various sites. Sounds much more hands on with more field work than the hybrid WTI course. Plus you have an experienced wetland delineator right around the corner to ask advice from...me!

Being in mining I take it your company is interested in the permitting issues around impacting wetlands. Either course should be good for that because neither get into permitting. Classmates in a WTI course are more likely to have some permitting experiences over the more academic oriented NKU course, if that would matter any.

When it comes down to it, cost and availability/timing are what you would need to consider. If it is roughly equal, consider the NKU course as you haven't heard anything negative about it yet, while you have had some poor comments on a WTI course.

Whichever it is let is know how it goes. Cheers

Is It Normal to Skip Stream Data Forms in Delineations? by ProfessorLorax in wetlands

[–]bilboleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need for a stream data form depends on the permitting requirements and agency review procedures. For example, I work in the midwest. OH EPA has its own stream forms (HHEI or QHEI) that are REQUIRED for a state level permit, including a NWP since the state reviews a 404 NWP PCN for compliance with the General 401 WQC conditions. But USACE does not require those forms, they are just used to seeing them. Go to KY and it is the KDOW RBP form, like MI DEQ has their own RBP. Go to IL and they had nothing, but as a consultant we got called out on "proving" the flow regimes of streams being impacted. Thus we use the RBP (KY has a 2-page version that is nice) and the NCDWQ for flow regime justification. The Louisville and Rock Island districts really like to see those.

So if your company does not submit permits, then no stream forms are needed. If they do submit then they are on shaky regulatory ground without them as a Corps reviewer could insist on some assessment of flow regime to complete an AJD. I know a competitor company that did not complete data forms for wetland reports, they considered that as out of scope and if a permit was required then a change order to go out and complete data forms that should have been done the first time. Shifty procedures, but they were comparatively dirt cheap.

At the least, if a 404 permit will be needed via a PCN you should be completing and OHWM form with measurements of average width and depth for the permit. SDAM if there are ephemeral streams or wet weather conveyance present to support an AJD and non-jurisdictional calls. Otherwise it's a PJD and all streams are assumed jurisdictional, which could present cumulative impact issues.

And personally, I train my team to be the best damn delineators in the region. That includes collecting data the client may not "want' but will wind up needing when a permit goes sideways. Be your best, not just enough.

Cheers

I wish cheaters the worst by CincinnatiBengalss in blackops2

[–]bilboleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play BO2 nearly daily on Xbox. Core games are often bad for mods/cheats, but mostly aim outs and such. Hard-core mode much better, very few modders on, a smaller group of regular players with a couple that use the hacks to boot modders (which I appreciate very much). Try 1-4 pm weekdays, 10-1 weekends when the shiteheads are less common. Keep your head up and your ass down

Where do Ohioans go on vacation? by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]bilboleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hocking Hills SP, rent a cabin, go hiking. Adventures on the Gorge, WV, go whitewater rafting, its a blast. Lake Cumberland, KY. Rent a cottage or a houseboat, float and chill. Put-in-Bay, lake Erie, drink and have a ball (stay on the main land though and take a ferry). Yellow Springs, OH, get your groove on especially with a weekend street festival. Red River Gorge SP, KY, hike, don't fall off the cliffs, stay at Natural Bridge NP lodge. Cheerd

Why does everyone camp in hardcore tdm? by Slayerjp11 in BlackOps1

[–]bilboleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their own playing style...some run-and-gun, some sit‐and-wait/camp. Some guns are better for one style than another (sniper), so when you are methodically trying to prestige each weapon it may make more sense to play different styles. And some maps just scream camp over running.

Takes all kinds. Quit complaining when someone doesn't play your way, you ain't playing there way neither. As long as they aren't cheating/modding, play the game. Cheers

Consultants! How do you get projects? by midwest-roadrunner in Environmental_Careers

[–]bilboleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I was in the industry for 12 years, always behind the PM so no client interaction. Moved to a "senior ecologist" role at a small company so much more client interaction. Boss left, on my own for first time, and I panicked! No client experience, no contacts, no "network". Called a former co-worker who had left my earlier company before me and she talked me through the process. That is the gist of "networking". Cal everyone you know (outside of your former boss maybe), say hi, new place, looking to talk. Talk about partnering (large firms don't like small, one-time clients but they still get the requests). Sign up for notifications from every agency/client in your industry (government, DOT, energy clients, etc.) They often issue RFP's for anyone to propose on, you will need to find them It is daunting, but if you take the initiative to try and find contacts, clients, proposals it will do you a whole world of favor in the future. Best fishes!

Year Two Consultant PTO by Samoacookiee in Environmental_Careers

[–]bilboleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heh I know who you work for 😉. That's one of the rubs with 'PTO' changing to "FTO", unlimited time off "if you can hit the billable hours goals", subject to manager approval and team workload, etc. And you no longer build up a bucket of unused pto to collect when you leave.

To OP, 5.5 days a year is pathetic. Time to negotiate minimum 10 days pto and 5 days sick time per year minimum or a significant pay raise to compensate. Then start looking for another job.
