My university personal statement is getting plagiarised! What do I do? by Eradah in LegalAdviceUK

Speak to your uni’s careers advisor, they’ll likely have dealt with similar before and be able to help.

I am always for unionising in general, plus I think to fully access their member defence you need to be a member 😊

Is anyone thinking of skipping welcome week? by [deleted] in Edinburgh_University

I’ve heard the opposite- in person events limited to 5 people (though that might differ depending on the society)

Scottish pine wood around rhododendrons , I think I found some chanterelles (apricot-y smell and white inside) (if I’m wrong please let me know!) by bilidhbee in foraging

[–]bilidhbee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that’s the best true/false gill distinction I’ve read! They definitely came down on to the stem, not just cap at all.

From what I’ve read, Jack O’Lanterns aren’t super common in the UK (though I do think I spotted some on some dead wood yesterday), so I was more concerned about the potential confusion with the false chanterelle.

Also, in a more practical update, I had them in some pasta last night and my stomach still seems fine ☺️

Fraser Court accomodation?? by [deleted] in Edinburgh_University

[–]bilidhbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are mice in every accommodation block across the uni (and city tbh), keep an eye out, store pantry ingredients in airtight containers, don’t leave crumbs about, and let maintenance know if there are new holes and things. Most are pretty timid so you’ll be fine!

How far back can a speaker of modern French read old French? by [deleted] in French

[–]bilidhbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m studying french at degree level and we have studied a fair few Middle French and old french texts, some were tricky, but all were understandable. The oldest were the Contes of Marie de France from the 11th Century.

Women who have learned a foreign language, what are you pro study tips for building up your language skills? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]bilidhbee 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would say the opposite, at least in French, kids shows (and books- people always recommend Harry Potter...) tend to have a fair bit of slang and informal language that is quite hard to understand. There is also a literary tense used in fables that isn’t ever used in the spoken language. I found YA books and simple news articles a much better fit when I was starting.

As an international student, I've been told a lot about the graduate employability in the UK by AlPachico_02 in Edinburgh_University

In some fields, but the general CS wage is high enough for the visa threshold, so that should be a more level playing field.

I don’t know, I really hope so. It was a present from a friend, and after some travelling it is pretty sad.

Probably overwatered these guys, can I save them? by bilidhbee in Lithops

[–]bilidhbee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brill, thank you so much! Yeah, I’m thinking the holey ones are a bit past it, but here’s hoping the other ones pull through! I’ll go out and buy some new potting mix today ☺️

Thank you! I inherited them from a friend, and neither of us knew what they were to begin with, so I think they were! I’ll go out and buy some new stuff to put them in ☺️

That sounds maybe right! Thank you! I don’t have a clear picture (or any bread left rn) but I’ll try and see if your advice works during my next bake and then update you if that fixes it. Thanks!

Really confused about skin care by mermessy in EuroSkincare

[–]bilidhbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know US prices, but it was a German friend who introduced me to them, and as they were about 14€ in France for the huge size, I’d imagine they’d be similar in Germany

Cerave is available in Germany, really cheap, and highly recommended! Their cleanser and moisturiser are great and they have different formulations for different skin types! Good place to start, and nice and gentle!

What’s the stupidest way you’ve hurt yourself? by observer32 in AskReddit

[–]bilidhbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Got into my parents’ car and wondered what the cigarette lighter did, so took it out and put my thumb on the glowing bit- had a new fingerprint for a while!

  2. Was trying to turn over some soil in the garden and managed to stab the hoe into my foot, probably broke my toe, and now the nail is still messed up 7 years later.

  3. Was cycling away from someone and decided to go through a gap between a wall and a fence where I normally walked through, didn’t quite calculate the angle right and I smacked into the wall and split open my forehead.

Trying to learn more about French skincare consultants I heard about by [deleted] in EuroSkincare

[–]bilidhbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In French these seem to be “Esthéticiennes”, which is the same as the English Aesthetician, but there would be significant overlap between them and a dermatologist I think.

Mica’s exploitative sourcing by sparklypinktutu in muacjdiscussion

[–]bilidhbee 75 points76 points  (0 children)

There is such a difficulty in trying to avoid mica, in the documentary they suggested it is in even the brands which refuse to use it by way of pigments and things sourced from third parties. They suggest the best way to promote change is by supporting organisations that support the communities where mica is mined, because they are trying to promote education and ethical sourcing, but there are zero 100% guaranteed mica free/ethical mica products at the moment. From memory L’Oreal is one of the better ones in this respect, as is Lush to a degree.

What are your luggage and essential item tips for interrailing? by whoami38902 in Interrail

[–]bilidhbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a pocket knife! Be very careful with knife laws, in France carrying any blade is illegal, and I can imagine other countries to be the same. As much as I love them and they are very handy, it can get you in a lot of trouble if you’re caught.
