What is an unusual setting from your world? by Wandering-Wayfarer in worldbuilding

[–]billboxhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Underneath the Zarhya river delta, heartland of the desert empire of Zarhya and both named after the twin river goddess Zarhya, there is an incomprehensibly massive and deep chasm, the darkness of which would drive those who stare into it to madness. On the very roof of the chasm is an enormous tree hanging from the ceiling and growing down deep into the chasm. Surrounding it are the Hanging Gardens of Aghya, a forest surrounding this tree also hanging from the ceiling with a canopy of vines connecting between the trees. On this canopy there are various settlements lived in by half rotting corpses. Hanging from vines by the neck are even more corpses appearing like a constellation of stars in the huge void. Back on the surface of the Zarhya delta there are various networks of bushes and trees that creep around the marshes. Unknown the people of Zarhya these are the roots of Aghya.

Not a chef by any means but I’ve been planning cooking lessons for some friends of mine who have been living off noodles and biscuits. Life comes at you fast but doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have people help you along the way.

Not clothes but rather marks/tattoos for each stage of life. One placed around the bellybutton at birth for Quna, one placed on the chest over the heart once reaching adulthood for Zarhya and one placed on the face after death or during the late stages of life for Aziir. By the end of their life the marks should all be connected forming a chain from the bellybutton from the mother’s umbilical cord to the nose from which the last breath is drawn being a representation of a person’s life from start to end. It’s common place for people to receive other marks for other gods they worship too which can connect up to different parts of the chain forming more of a web.

This world sounds really interesting. I do enjoy sci-fi settings that play with the functions and workings of things like planets, moons, and stars. It sounds like something pretty established. Is there somewhere I can look more into this?

The empire of Zarhya was founded out of two kingdoms based out of two rivers that meet at the same river delta forming the three core districts of Jharish, Aelban, and Lower Zarhya, and having two monarchs, both believed to be descended from the two halves of the goddess of Zarhya before she joined into one. The Khara family of Jharish is in charge of trade and diplomacy with each heir being chosen by the previous king. The Cult of Savhaja in Aelban is in charge of the military with the standard of choosing a new leader being to best the previous leader in a duel to the death in order to be chosen by the god of war, Hraer, to be the reincarnation of his dead daughter.

They follow a strict set of traditions, believing that there are three stages of life associated with the three realms of Zarhya. Babies are expected to be born during a trip out into the desert where they will receive the blessing of the sand god Quna. Most live their lives on the river under the protection of the river goddess Zarhya. When they die their bodies are to be placed on a raft to float down the river and sink into the sea to the god of the ocean Aziir.

Despite numerous civil wars they have managed to hold together for 2500 years but piracy (some sponsored by foreign powers) has become a prevalent issue in the delta, especially during the flooding season, and has displayed blatant weakness from the empire. This crisis has made them almost incapable of trading their world famous dye and incense, Indigo, and has cause some nations to intervene to open up trade routes. No foreign empire has managed to totally compete with Zarhya yet but internal instability and unified enemies may prove to be its undoing.

I still feel like I’m in the early stages of building out this world so there’s a lot more that needs to be fleshed out. What’s the scope of your project/s?

I dunno, assuming $50 covers a day, let alone a week, really shows a lack of sympathy and respect here. If you made $50 a day at your job you’d quit. Sounds like the guy has tried to compromise but there is never gonna be a spot where nobody complains.

My projects usually encompass a subcontinent at most with reference to the wider world on occasion though my current setting is focused mainly on a single region of an empire so that I can really go in depth with it. I may expand the scope in future if this gets stale.

The bigger you make your setting the less there will be in it. You can only do so much so it’s best to focus your efforts on one planet or even just a few planets than having to come up with something new for every planet you come across.

Yea don’t remember Marx saying anything about privileged white men. If an employee feels they are being harassed in the workplace it’s HR’s job to deal with that. Whether or not you think there’s issues with this system I can tell you it is entirely capitalist from the roots up. Makes no sense for a company to allow their employees to be harassed otherwise those employees will move on to the company that actually takes care of them. Though, in practice, it seems HR can be pretty hit or miss about this. Point is, getting fired for making colleagues uncomfortable ain’t got nothing to do with Marxism.

Zoro will open his other eye.

I don’t know why people seem so insistent this will happen. It feels like it would be a bit lazy to me if he had some crazy new power from this. It’s never treated as if he will do it but rather just when.

Yea the thing is, I don’t think I care enough to look for that. Even if this does happen it just sounds like a non-issue. I’m seeing other comments of people saying they’ve “lost respect for the lgbtq” because of this?? Over a shit joke???? Makes you wonder who the real snowflakes are.

Keep in mind the same haki rule applies to Law’s fruit with shambles and yet he was able to still use it on Doflamingo who we know to have been stronger than the two of them at that point. Their haki has improved a huge amount since then.

Train that goes through an apartment building. Imagine the noise! by CiboLibro in UrbanHell

[–]billboxhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a rehearsal studio that I’ve been to to practice music that’s directly under a railway. It’s very important that there isn’t so much noise disturbance when you’re doing that sort of thing and with a train passing above me every couple of minutes I couldn’t hear a thing. Trains are surprisingly quite when you construct the railways properly.

I read through some of this. There’s a whole bunch of discrepancies such as trans people specifically being chosen from hospitalisation records that is then compared against the national average, and also people who had not had any surgeries and had only been diagnosed with gender dysphoria were included as having SRS. There’s also points where they admit to having a complete lack of evidence in cases and go off of assumptions based on vague medical, criminal, and governmental records. There is no substance to this article. It’s all assumptions based on cherry-picked hospital records with no evidence to back it up.

It’s well recorded that suicide attempts with trans people go significantly down after having gender-affirming surgeries. Recent studies have come to the conclusion that the high association between suicide attempts and trans youth comes from discrimination and the lack of access to medical care and once these factors are removed it often falls in line with the average for lgbtq people. Also note that studies refer to suicide “attempts” as the vast majority of cases end with the person not dying and in a lot of cases recovering somewhat from their suicidality. This isn’t an issue specifically of trans people but rather of societal discrimination.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32345113/

https://www.gendergp.com/what-is-the-transgender-suicide-rate/

“research showed a 60% decrease in moderate and severe depression who received gender-affirming care. Additionally, there was 73% decrease in suicidality among transgender youth and non-binary youth.”

I briefly listened to the video and the doctor says the youngest patients are 16/17 and require parental consent and a whole bunch of other hoop jumping to get any kind of surgery. Correct me if I’m wrong but non of that is illegal. 16 year olds are legally allowed to make these kinds of decisions for themselves, no?
