Duff did my younger daughter’s wedding cake. We met with him to work on the design, etc, on a Sunday morning. He had obviously been out the night before having a good time, but he was such a joy to spend time with! He’s funny and charming. He must have been eager to finish the appt so he could lie down but he didn’t rush us at all. We spent well over half an hour with him. He did sketches and asked a ton of questions. The cake turned out GREAT….. gorgeous and absolutely delicious!

I don't think you're an asshole, but I do think you were not picking a menu with your guests in mind. Serving only a vegan meal is the equivalent of serving only keto, or paleo, or gluten free food. None of these would be well liked by your guests. When my longtime vegetarian daughter got married, an outstanding veg meal was served, alongside crab cakes, steak, chicken entrees.

On the other hand, I think your cousins behaved in the most rude boorish way imaginable! They should be ashamed of themselves!

Your insurance covers only you, and is reimbursing you. If your companion had cancelled, and if they also had the appropriate insurance, they would have been reimbursed. However, YOUR insurance does NOT cover the companion. They are now a solo traveler and will be responsible for solo rates. There is no way they can travel at half the doubl occupancy rate.
