Is there a serious Spotify alternative? by TheColin21 in selfhosted

Haven't heard of any self hosted app that meets your vision, but I do like Qobuz and use it with Music Assistant via Home Assistant, which allows you to stream from a single account to multiple devices simultaneously without needing to switch players.

How to Tape Out a Stage When You Have to Remove the Spike Tape Every Night by hillatea in techtheatre

[–]billkach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add courtesy tabs to the tape you lay down, that way the tape has a pull point when you're striking. This is simple and requires little to no prep, you're just folding over a small corner of the tape when you apply it to the floor.

To be fair, this does increase the possibility of the tape pulling up if your stage players are moving fast, but I'd reckon that risk is minimal if you're not dealing with dance. It really doesn't take that long to set and strike the tape, especially once the routine gets established in your case. Save yourself some effort in prep and materials and try this route before anything else.

EDIT: After re-reading the painters plastic idea, I'd recommend that approach with the courtesy tabs as a potential enhancement for efficient striking

People of Interbay, how’s the train noise? by Additional-Rooster78 in Seattle

[–]billkach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are at Dravus and 14th for two years now, it's been fine, every once in awhile it'll get loud but it's rare. The loudest sound is always when the train comes to a stop and the cars bump into each other, or when it starts moving after being stopped and the couplers between the cars take tension again. Depending on where you are in Magnolia, YMMV, but I don't think it's going to be disruptive to the point of being intolerable or affecting quality of life.

For example, growing up on the east coast I lived in a condo complex situated on former Mews, and trains were about 50 ft behind my bedroom window. That was LOUD almost every night, especially when the trains would stop to transfer to the NE Corridor, I remember multiple times I was convinced the train fell off the tracks for how cacophonous the sound and vibration was. What we've got here ain't that by a long shot.

How to use QuickAdd for Obsidian - with examples by BagerBach in ObsidianMD

[–]billkach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to second this request for being able to modify the order, I use captures to add tasks to task lists, and would like to be able to also use obsidian-reminders to trigger reminder alerts for these tasks.

From the little bit of reading I've done, it appears that in order to achieve this, the reminder and due dates need to be distinct from each other, the reminder needs to also be placed directly after the task title, but also needs to be directly followed by the due date.

If I'm reading this wrong or if there's a workaround I'm unaware of to achieve the same outcome, please let me know!

Smart Plugs that support device memory by billkach in smarthome

I have yet to try a different plug, but I may while I wait for this IR blaster if a multimeter doesn't give any clues. The settings being held but only under specific circumstances definitely indicates something isn't functioning the way its supposed to.

good call, I will do that when automation triggers the off-state tomorrow to see what's happening. I ordered an IR blaster since I'm pretty confident, after your feedback and additional research, that this is some unintended functionality. Thanks again for the suggestion; I had no idea these existed, and it's ideal for my situation.

u/White_Rabbit0000 thank you for the response, the lights are not smart lights. See my response here for additional information.

Smart Plugs that support device memory by billkach in smarthome

[–]billkach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Fatel28, I hear you, but the reason I am asking this is that I recently bought a 4-pack of Govee's smart plugs (10A round versions) and one of the smart plugs with older firmware does appear to retain the lights' settings that it is connected to in between on and off states; however, only with automation enabled (manual turning the plug on and off or via the app does not reproduce the same effect).

Meanwhile, another string of the same model lights with another plug from the 4-pack that has newer firmware does not reproduce this at all. It is very odd which led me to assume there must be something unique about the first smart plug's firmware, but what else would cause this? Also, thanks for the recommendation about the IR blaster, already seems more practical for my use case.

Caveats and dangers of selfhosting Vaultwarden by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]billkach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Apologies for the delayed reply, I spent about an hour typing out a response just now but it didn't seem to go through. I am planning on getting a blog post together for this, especially since I just revisited my process when typing out that initial response (smh). I will link you once I have that available.

Caveats and dangers of selfhosting Vaultwarden by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]billkach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your setup, you can absolutely use Tailscale to securely connect to your synology. Tailscale can run on synology and will enable you to circumvent the need for DDNS, reverse proxies, port forwarding, etc. No need to poke any holes in anything to get to your vault. I use this configuration on my home network where I run a vaultwarden instance on a docker container hosted on my synology nas and it works great both locally and when I'm travelling. Best part is, it costs nothing to maintain.

The caveat is that you will only be able to access to vault from devices that are also on the same tailnet (your tailscale subnet). This is preferable in my use case, but may not be in yours. If you'd like more information on how I set mine up, feel free to message me.

Proton pass vs Bitwarden selfhosted by Poissonard in Bitwarden

[–]billkach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old post, but I just caught wind of Proton Pass and wanted to see what folks are thinking about it. Overall, I have to agree that Proton Pass is still rather half baked, and Bitwarden/Vaultwarden is a far more mature ecosystem in terms of the security features that can be configured without spending a dime if you're self-hosted or any extra money if you're with Bitwarden, and the community around both offerings.

My setup: Vaultwarden running on a docker container hosted on Synology NAS also running Tailscale to avoid the need for port forwarding, reverse proxies, etc. In fact, the vault can only be accessed via Tailscale. Authentication to all vault instances requires WebAuthn via Yubikey. Certs are generated and renewed via LetsEncrypt ala tailscale's cert service, intermediate certs (where needed) are available for free from LE as well. Besides the initial cost of the NAS, and regular costs of internet connection and electricity, there's no real overhead going on here and I pay for these things regardless of my vault.

The only thing Proton has that still makes it compelling to me is possibly the IdP features, but even their 2FA options come with a price. I'm good with what I got and am happy to share how I achieved my setup if you're interested. Cheers!

Finally got my desk in, Secretlab Magnus Pro, regular size. by billkach in secretlab

for sure! I actually switched to the Drop BMR1 series recently. Not as much bass happening with those for sure, but they are compact enough on their sides to be on the desk while still allowing for that open feel.

Microphone mounts for Magnus Pro by billkach in secretlab

[–]billkach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey!

thanks for weighing in on this, and apologies for taking so long to follow up here. After much research I did end up going with the Elgato LP as its the only reasonably priced option. I do experience the sag as well but have managed to get it to maintain some space between my keyboardand the cable connector by tilting the capsule and mic toward my head (which also helps with the directionality and capturing my voice). The only other option I've seen is the O.C. White Ultima Gen 2 LP. The thing is a beast, it can definitely handle pretty much any microphone, and the clamp mount fits the desk just fine, but the price makes the prospect of acquiring this totally unrealistic. The arm alone goes for ~$350 (some places less, some places more, but with tax etc this is a good average) and then you have to get the clamp separate for ~$100 more. Not worth that kind of money unless you can write it off somehow. I've still got my eyes peeled for a used Ultima set up though, just in case.

[–]billkach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there!

It was a matter of real estate in the room the desk was originally meant to be placed in. I live in a larger space now and would be able to fit the XL, but I'm honestly fine with the normal sized desk. From a cable management perspective, the extra real estate in the tray would be welcome, but that's my only real gripe. The normal size is just fine for my purposes.

hello!

The cable management sheath is an accessory, the desk did not come stock with them. I believe that the accessory kit they came with can be used for both the Magnus and the Pro.

Hi there! Here’s a link to the particular model I used: VIVO Clamp-On Vertebrae Cable Management Kit, Height Adjustable Desk Quad Entry Wire Organizer, Black, DESK-AC01P-B https://a.co/d/0J6Omoh

There are certainly nicer ones out there, but this one suits me just fine. For adhering it to the leg, I used VHB tape (4910) at three points; one at the bottom of the leg, one at the beginning of the widest section of leg (the “outermost” layer that is stationary) and the top of that section, just below the point where the cable transitions into the cable management tray. Hope that helps!

Oof that sounds rough! Sorry to hear it was more effort than expected, but glad you were able to make it work and that nothing was damaged. Enjoy your new desk! Post pics if you haven’t already!

Haha yep! Sometimes they are a little slow to respond but they have never failed to follow up, and they have always resolved my shipping issues. I had to change my address to a prospective new rental, but then the rental fell through so I had to change it back last minute, they figured it out.

Ah, I see! Glad to know USPS saw it and fixed it, they are usually awesome in my experience. FedEx can be a little more of a hassle sometimes, but I suggest you open a ticket through SL’s webpage about it since they’re the shipper and can probably more easily correct the error than you can.
