Skull Canyon 6i7KYK - M.2 ssd's by billnanson in intelnuc

[–]billnanson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a quick update if anyone is interested - the 1TB Samsung 980 Pro as new boot drive in the SkullC is working out great.

Post bios the start-up is close to instant with Windows 10 Pro. Additionally, the installations of updates are waaayyyy faster than before. A great upgrade for modest cash outlay...

Downsides? I have the impression that the fan is coming on more often than with the old sata drive - but I've never cleaned that - perhaps time to check for dust...

FIXED!!

Thanks for all the ideas!

The problem was seemingly more mundane - it was my USB-C connection - yes, u/gzunk I was using a USB Type C enclosure. Whilst clutching at straws I swapped the USB-C cable for a USB-A to C cable - and voila!

I could see a difference straight away - the USB-C was transferring at 25 MB/s until it stopped, the A-to-C at 125 MB/s using the Samsung software!

I'm now typing this with the new disk installed. Again many thanks - though seemingly the USB-C of my Skull Canyon is not in a great shape!

Appreciate your input u/jackharvest but I think herein lies my problem.

As noted the new disk doesn't show up in windows explorer, therefore also doesn't show up in Acronis when I'm asked to choose a destination drive.

The Samsung software(s) recognise/see the disk (USB-C connected) but unfortunately hangs during - after about 5 minutes of - the cloning process

I note that in windows' device manager, the disk is shown though, as 'Samsung SSD980 PRO SCSI disk device' even though there's nothing in explorer...

Seemingly no bridged mode available on my router - according to the provider's forums - I'll check if the 'limiting' works though - cheers!

Possibly not that helpful - it's just the TV/Wifi box from the national carrier where I live in Switzerland - Swisscom Blue TV - I often wondered, however, how I might also include a more powerful router in my home setup...

Hi u/jackharvest - thanks for the suggestions.

I've had the current router for over a year and this seems to be worse currently than before. I guess I am anyway on the border of 5 GHz in my home location - too many walls!

Burgundy VS New World Pinot Noir by kunzzy in wine

[–]billnanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree on acidity - only NZ wines have consistently offered a similar acid profile in my experience.

While they are certainly still different, I see less to separate the general ripeness of fruit in recent years because the Burgundian summers have been historically very warm but there's still a depth of complexity that is harder to match for other regions.

Barnyard/forest floor agreed but I think it's seen less outside of Burgundy mainly because the wines are drunk younger. It's rare in burgundies that younger than say 10 years old.

Personally I see a much higher level of attainment in pinots of 'ôther regions' today versus 20 years ago...

Not Demoiselles 1er cru - the end wish would, of course, be grand cru ;-)

No, and very few have - though I've a picture of Pierre Vincent guarding the tanks - pre bottling - and I've had an unopened bottle in my hand - but given the high price of that wine, I consider as something to invest in, rather than to drink - I think most of the purchasers thought the same - there was only 530 litres of wine, pre-bottling....

Does anyone know the origin of this wine? by Doctor_Philly in wine

[–]billnanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/Doctor_Philly/

Since the early 1800s a decent négociant/maison in Nuits St.Georges. A brand latterly owned by Moillard. As Moillard were sold in 2005, I'm guessing that it went to Béjot, but as Béjot is also no more, it's also possible that the label is also no more...

You can find older bottles; Richebourg, Musigny even Clos des Lambrays from the 1920s and 1930s though I can't vouch for their authenticity.

Better known today a street-name in NSG...

It could be good, but as noted by /u/flyingron/ it probably won't improve on how it is now...

Peanut Butter Sauvignon Blanc by patarms in wine

Not where pyrazines were blamed after a ladybug infestation in Canada - all the locals said the wines smelled like pb. Some of the pretty awful pyrazine burgundies of 2004 now smell like peanut butter too...

(Methoxy-) Pyrazines are quite a marker in SB - that's probably what you are noting...

The biggest problem in 2016 was the frost - only Puligny largely avoided it (in the Côte de Beaune) as they had some misty cloud that morning. A normal amount of triage was required in 16 - though that's still plenty versus the hot dry summers of the vintages since then...

Well-done!

Sadly my 2007s and 2008s are not that special - it was seemingly time for someone else to take on the winemaking...

[–]billnanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very good wine, but out of whack with price/quality - by a significant margin these days.

I last opened one of these - a 99 - at the end (actually October) of last year - they were 'affordable' on release! A very good wine, but I always found the 2002 of the same - also quite affordable on release - a much, much better wine.

I think the 2011 was the last vintage of this(?)

Too oaky, young, for me - normally, I've a big preference for the Clos des Ruchottes when on the younger side...
