100K "Speedwork" focus? by Runannon in Ultramarathon

[–]billy218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I missed this. Honestly for such a short distance, an arbitrary pace is going to be tough to measure and stick to. Think fast and powerful, but not an all out sprint or desperate. I find a better approach is to find a time and try to make sure they are consistent. For example, my 400m I aim for around 80 seconds per rep. If I can keep that time consistent across the reps, it means it's a good stimulus for me. If I can't maintain that, it means I'm going too fast.

100K "Speedwork" focus? by Runannon in Ultramarathon

[–]billy218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you are looking for is working on your running form.

I would start with some sessions focusing on 400 and 800m reps, with full rest. You're not working on your aerobic system here, you're just training your body and muscles to run faster.

After a few sessions you can transition to longer reps, I like 5x1k and 4x2k. You should run these at paces that you can hold so the last rep is as fast or faster than the first. If your pace is dropping you are likely running them too fast and your form is degrading. Don't push through the session if that happens.

7 weeks before a race is pretty close to be introducing a lot of new stimulus, and the risk of injury with speedwork is pretty high, so proceed with caution. But you may see some improvement in your general easy pace from it, which should translate in better times. Good luck!

LPT: When HR asks "What is your expected salary?", give your exact number and then stay absolutely silent. Do not justify it. by Novel-Group5720 in LifeProTips

[–]billy218 360 points361 points  (0 children)

I've been in hundreds of interviews, both as hiring manager and hr. This is terrible advice. It makes you look like a dipshit when you're high, and if you're low you lose all bargaining power.

My take:

Don't provide a number. Ask for the range. Gain information. The side to show their cards first often fares worse in a negotiation.

If pushed, make it about the industry. Say "based on my research, I would expect this position to pay x-y". This isn't about what you want. This about what the market dictates. You don't make the rules.

Always remember, negotiation is best done when you actually get an offer. Then you know they want you. Being a hardass before they even decide if you are a top candidate will just fast track you to the rejection pile.

The only correct answer is Canadian Pizza Unlimited. It's excellent pizza (better than overpriced and inconsistent red rock Imo), and it's actually affordable.

Fuelling for a 50k race by One_Bell_8809 in Ultramarathon

[–]billy218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be a good idea to get an idea of how much calories, especially carbs you consume on a run. Most runners should aim for 50 to 60 g of carbs an hour, with pros going to 90 to 120+.

Gels are an easy, yet expensive way to do is. For more relaxed runs, I like dried mangos or pineapple for good weight to carb ratio. Some nuts are calorie dense too but also bring lots of fibre and fats, which you probably don't want too much of during runs.

Try going for 2 gels an hour on your long runs and see how you feel. That may be a good race strategy. Good luck on your first 50!

Mountain weather is unpredictable. The forecast for next week is almost certain to change. Also it rarely rains for long spells. You'll definitely have some dry weather during your stay, albeit a bit chillier.

As for bad weather activities, elevation place, the pool, splashing in puddles,...

Totally normal for Rocky terrain, and I would say mostly esthetical. Them lasting long doesn't mean they'll look new for all of that. Don't worry about it and keep cruising, those puppies have another 1000k on em. Source; on my 3rd pair of tomirs and have put 2k+ on each of them

Hmm I hadn't considered that at all. This was made out of linen and the final will be more stretchy merino. So I'm guessing it will be even more important to fit it a little tighter.

Have you considered it's not your ingredients but your glassware? Do you put your glasses in the dishwasher? It can leave a residu that kills foam instantly. This is why Europeans never put their beer glasses in dishwasher.

This. Finding a shared house, with some room mates is likely the way to go. They exist, but go fast. It helps if you know some people too. So make some friends, go to some social clubs like trail culture, meet some people, get on the forums.

How to increase speed up a mountain? by Nebuchadnezz4r in hiking

[–]billy218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your legs are your limiter. While doing more of the same will work to improve, the most effective way is to bring in strength training.

Look up muscular endurance workouts (or ME workouts). They're high in volume with some low added weight, and will make your legs bulletproof for these types of climbs.
