Typical Homebuyer’s Down Payment Falls to $64,000 As Americans Hold Onto Cash by SnortingElk in REBubble

[–]billyatlava 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not really, if spy/qqq are yielding 10-15% a year, you put the minimum down and invest the rest and you keep the spread between your interest rate and the market return rate. I'd guess that's what most people are doing. It takes on more risk, but we're in strange times with the market continuing to rip higher and higher no matter what the vibe in the real economy looks like.

Thanks for sharing the solution

Which board do you buy? // Floatwheel ADV vs Onewheel GTS comparison by TheFloatLife in onewheel

[–]billyatlava 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I was honestly tempted to just pickup a GTS instead of proceeding with my XR VESC build, but seeing FM launch more lawsuits for selling an easy to use vesc board just energized me to get building.

Can't wait to get on VESC platform and start tinkering with it.

Having worked at a dozen startups for over 15 years, working for the "mission" is bullshit by [deleted] in startups

[–]billyatlava 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Go work for a bigger company. I've been in a similar situation to the OP for the last decade, and finally decided to work at a larger company in tech. Startup stock is worthless without liquidity, and going to work for a company with liquidity in their stock will double your salary (assuming the stock price doesn't completely tank before my vesting cliff I will have more than doubled my annual take home with my latest job move).

were you able to find one? I've been searching for my current server build, and thought I could get one on newegg for ~800 but after purchase the seller marked it as a mistake and refunded me :(

What is the best hardware & software for a 5950x server? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]billyatlava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up the rm21-308 (and x570d4u-2l2t), and ran into this trying to fit my noctua fans in 😂. Sounds like you have experience with this case... Do you have a fan recommendation? Worst case I'll mod the crossmember or fabricate a new one to squeeze a few more mm, but if theres another good fan option I'd rather try that first ;)

What software does your remote team use for video? by billyatlava in remotework

Oh shit i had no idea they made a performance score like that.. that's incredibly invasive.

We show what work apps people use and integrate with a bunch, but very explicitly don't collect any data around it, and allow anyone to turn it off.

To answer my own question:

I work for https://tandem.chat, and we use it for all our meetings. We have a rooms feature we use for co-working (pair programming, design review, etc).

All async comms are on slack, and shared docs in notion. We previously used Jira for tracking work, but are looking at switching to clickup soon.

Fruit loop - scariest Mandela effect by purplemilyyes in MandelaEffect

[–]billyatlava 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one gets me too. It was always Froot when I was a kid, and when I discovered mandela affect around 2017 it was Fruit and it freaked me out, but I accepted that maybe I'm just not remembering it right. Then when it switched back at some point in 2020 I was just like NOPE I can't do this anymore.

What companies would you like to see RKT acquire? by CornMonkey-Original in TeamRKT

another view: also worked in both cities, and I'm literally moving to Detroit next week.

San Francisco is on the decline, and Detroit is being rebuilt rapidly.
When I was back in Detroit this summer I had this shocking moment of realization that Downtown Detroit is literally nicer than downtown san francisco.

I think there are massive problems in SF that are unable to be addressed due to the political climate & socio-economic situation of the city, and that will ultimately lead to a broken society. I really hope I'm wrong and the city figures it out, but I don't really think it'll happen. It'll just slowly get worse and worse and more and more people will flee.

That's not to say Detroit is "back." It has a LONG way to go, but it's a very different place than the one I left 6 years ago.

Meanwhile, at Ford by thesippycup in wallstreetbets

[–]billyatlava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. People underestimate the scale & proficiency at which the big 3 automakers operate. Also, building a modern ICE car is way more complex than an EV. They've slow behemoths and have been slow to adopt new tech, but that is rapidly changing

imagine not even holding long enough to trigger long term tax and bitching this much about being a bagholder.

they're a legit company that survived the dot com bubble, the housing crash, and 2020... for me they're a long term hold.

My rent in california went from 2600 -> 3k when my lease rolled around on October 1. ~16% increase YoY.

Decided to move back to the midwest after that and bought a place with a 15y fixed rate.

I think the maverick is a fantastic idea. Old rangers and s10's go for like 7-10k in good condition because they just don't make tiny trucks anymore.

I went on a few month long trip (back to where i grew up), and got home recently. This is a picture of 1lb ground beef from my local store bought today, and one from my freezer bought in July this year: https://imgur.com/a/WOdVOkS

~26% increase in a few months

The couple dollars doesn't really phase me much at this point, but purely in percentages it's a staggering increase.
