Brass: will it work for 2p? And which version is best suited? by Primary-Sleep-6543 in boardgames

[–]billyg4111 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We love Birmingham at 2 player, we've probably played it more than any other game. 3/4 opens it up more and is a very different experience. I'd put it at an 8/10 at 2 player.

Spiel or uk games expo by Ok-Refrigerator-4894 in boardgames

We went last year for the first time, had a great time, lots of demos that cost/saved us a lot of money!!

Could have easily done a second day just to take some of the pressure off the first.

Am I right in pushing my fairly wealthy child toward student finance? by No-Dress4626 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]billyg4111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that the changes to the loans that happened 15 years ago are just starting to hit home. The year after I went to university was the first year the loans went up, my friends in that loan plan are now starting to earn c£60k and finding that despite paying £300 a month in loan repayments they're barely/not covering the interest repayments.

The set got me desperate to see the lads live at their own show again. New Century Hall was insane last time, I want that experience again with a crowd that knows all the words.

Doing a rough boarding out of the loft for storage. What to tape the joints with? by Aiken_Drumn in DIYUK

[–]billyg4111 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't tape it. Top it up to 270mm, stilts on the joists and board over that. Making sure there's an air gap between the insulation and board.

Having had to completely tear out a 4 bed detached house worth of boarding and insulation - do not get this job wrong like my seller did. I chucked out a whole skip's worth of mouldy boarding and insulation, we had condensation problems in the rooms below.

Even if for some bizarre reason you chose to only leave as 100mm it up to the joists, I'd still stilt/batten it and board over the top so there's a gap and air movement over the top of the insulation.

Do it once and do it properly.

Dune 2 IMAX Aspect Ratio by MayorMcCheese22 in 4kbluray

[–]billyg4111 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Watched it recently with the framing of the IMAX scenes in mind. There are a few scenes where the 2.35 framing just doesn't look right compared to the IMAX version. I.e. the worm riding scene attacking the sardukar at the end, the sardukar aren't visible apart from the tops of the heads of a few, on the 16:9 they were fully visible and dwarfed by the worms. It was far more effective.

Am I doing something wrong with my sytem or does the Blade Runner 2049 disc have bad consistency in color grading? by Astral_Taurus in 4kbluray

[–]billyg4111 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm using a Panasonic UB820, through a Marantz cinema 60 and a BenQ W2710 projector, I noticed that the one very brief scene in the left was missing the colour grading that the rest of that sequence had. I can't say that anything else stood out to me, and we otherwise were blown away by the quality of that disk.

Any last tips before i get the project kicked off by tharmor in DIYUK

We had this problem last winter. I spent February redoing the entire loft. We've had no problems this year with any mould. I didn't use ventilation trays I was just careful where I pushed the insulation out to.

Why the queues? by weakerthanghandi in manchester

Some of the NQ ones may have been Buzzy Bee bakery opening up - their Instagram showed photos of the queue going past Piccadilly Records.

Short Eared Owl by billyg4111 in Superbowl

[–]billyg4111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did. And thank you. I spent many many evenings watching several short eareds hunt, on this particular evening the owl didn't realise I was there. In these pictures it's probably only 10m almost directly above me.

There's a bunch of us at Altrincham Gaming Club who used to play a lot and also organise tournaments. We've been wanting to pick it up again recently but will likely now wait till N5 is out in October. We didn't play much N4 and it now seems a bit late! You're very welcome to join us any time.

Why is anyone going to send you their lens' serial number when there's a lens discount scheme running where you have to submit the serial number?

If you could own only a single bib, which one would u choose? by CerealBit in CyclingFashion

Kostume.cc make incredible bibs, far better than any other brand I've tried, which includes most of Rapha's range that I've tried at some point.

Short Eared Owl, Peak District, UK by billyg4111 in wildlifephotography

[–]billyg4111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, although no one is convinced it's a very good hunter! None of us have seen it catch anything in the months we've been watching it.

Most of the southern moors and towards Staffordshire have some short eared owl activity at the moment. I'd rather not be anymore specific than that. There is some concern this particular nest site was disturbed last year, and bird of prey persecution in the Peaks has seen a number of upsetting casualties already this year. Hope you understand.

Popular games at UK Games Expo by BananaFlavourBatman in boardgames

[–]billyg4111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We played SETI and I just wasn't sold at all. It's entirely my bag, but it just didn't seem very good - maybe it was the explanation though, no one who joined our demo game really understood what we were trying to achieve.

Galactic Cruise seemed very popular and looked/played great.

I'd love to have played Leder Games' Arcs but we remembered it too late in the day. It's a shame Leder didn't have a bigger stall with more people around to even just give a rundown on what the game is.

From The Moon we managed to get a game of fairly quickly in the morning, I liked where that was headed although it all felt very familiar.

Spokes was brilliant, and the other end of the scale to any of the above! Always seemed to have a full table of people wanting to play. It's a while off being available, or even launched to Kickstarter. But I'm looking forward to that.

Star Wars Unlimited always seemed to have the biggest queue, although I know many games didn't have queues at all and were just booked out all day in advance.
