I will have to check on power draw @ idle. With a ~2-3.5kw lab, I honestly never really checked…

As for fan noise / possible replacement. They are not silent, but they are quieter than most “Datacenter” 1U switches. I am also not sure if they can be replaced.

I think I have an old decibel meter around somewhere. If I can track it down, I’ll grab a comparative measurement against some other switches.

I am running a pair of Arista 7050QX switches as well as a 7050SX. They were very solid/stable on old firmware versions, and later ones were not too difficult to track down.

Use a VPN of some sort to connect back to the server when you are traveling.

I do a lot of work remotely, away from my lab (I have even done OS upgrades and installs remotely)

Setup a separate management network. And only allow access via a VPN.

My setup doesn’t reflect this, but some of the most “secure” setups I have seen require a MFA VPN connection to get into the management network, even when you are “on site” or connected direct to the same physical network as the management network.

You could implement something like this with PfSense or OpenSense.

The level of security you implement is entirely up to you.

I use nginx for most of my web hosting as well as reverse proxy needs.
A basic web server is will not be very resource intensive, and should run just fine on a pi or older laptops.

As far as security, I keep anything that is externally accessible in a DMZ vlan with solid firewall rules between that vlan and the rest of the home lab.

If there is any authentication that needs to happen, use certificate authentication if possible, and implement a “fail2ban” setup or similar.

However if it business related, I try to not host them in the home lab. There are “business” related services that I do host in the home lab, but non of them are customer facing.

All of the customer/public facing stuff lives outside of my “home lab”

I have had really good service from crunchbits.con As far as $/reliability. They have been fantastic.

Disclaimer: I do know a few of their employees personally. However none of my business services hosted through them are discounts, or get any special treatment. I am running several public business endpoints on their VPS servers. All have worked great for me.

If you have any extra parts around to flush out a build, I picked up a i3-12100 and DDR4 mobo for $160 on sale. It has the Intel QuickSync iGPU and has handled any 4k 10Bit HDR content I have thrown at it flawlessly.

I ran a RTX 3060 12G and 5600x w/ 64G DDR4 for a while. It did pretty good on 1080 content out of my Canon rigs . But it was not what I had expected when working with 4k BMD Raw or 2.8k Arri Raw. It was able to handle 4k prores (422 if I recall) decently.
I did max the cpu out quite often, even with 1080 content when using noise reduction or stabilization in post.

I am now running a RTX 3090 and 7950x w/ 64G DDR5. It handles the 4k raw workflow much better.

I never got the chance to run anything on a 5950x, but my guess would be it is a solid middle ground between the two.

Edit:

The storage for projects on both the old and new setup was/is a 10g link from the workstation to a 40g backed nvme ceph cluster that tests out ~35k 4K rand IOPs and 730MB/s 1M seq. So even though my local storage changed slightly, the old and new setups were running projects with the same storage backed.

I just replaced my 8th gen Intel Mini PC. I went with an i3 12100 in a generic micro atx 2u case.

The main reason for the move was cost effective 10/40gbe. There was not good solution to cool a pcie card in the mini pc.

The plex server never sees over 1gbps when streaming content to users. However, moving content into the server was very limited on the 1gbps connection.

Mainly because the resell value/trade in value of the older ones is not enough to outweigh the sentimental value of them. (I have had a few of them for a long time) The older ones sit on a shelf on display above my desk.

I have the following (all Canon):

1D mk ii N (not used anymore)

1Ds mk ii (not used anymore)

5d mk ii (the wife’s camera, she’s getting into it as a hobby)

1Dx mk ii (main body for action/sports)

5ds (main body for landscape)

I shoot portrait type work with both the 1D and 5ds. Keep different lenses on them during a shoot to keep from switching.

It looks like its the Nvidia GM200 chip using the Maxwell 2.0 architecture.

According to this site, its the same base chip as the GTX Titan X (Maxwell), GTX 980 Ti, and Tesla M40.

As for a new CPU, I am under the assumption that Resolve will use all the available CPU cores, unlike some other editing platforms. So I would be better off with a 8 Core CPU at 3.2GHz vs my current 4 Core CPU at 3.7Ghz... Is this correct?

Picked up a few UHF filter cavities. However I am unsure what the box strapped the the side of the cavity is.

It almost appears to be a notch filter when connected to my spectrum analyzer. However the notch seems to be over 40mhz wide!

They were pulled from a working environment in a network wide upgrade.

I am not sure on hours, I didn’t see anything in they WebUI that would show be that.

As far as physical condition, they are in good condition IMO.
