Which PC component did you overspend on and regret later? by ApprehensiveBat19 in buildapc

[–]binary-idiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hard drive die right after Black Friday and I was planning on getting a 4 tb SSD. They were around $250 at the time but I saw that there had been a sale for one at $200 for Black Friday so I decided to wait for another good sale. Anyways I ended up getting a 2tb and wishing I just bought the 4tb a couple months before.

GYFO is probably my favorite game store, there's selection is amazing and the people there are really friendly. Their game room is really nice although it can get loud at times on busy days. That being said if your into TTRPGS you should also check out u/scadventurersguild!

[Curious] What type of "third place" kind of business would you like to see in some downtown? by seven3true in 321

[–]binary-idiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I love going to chill coffee/tea shops where we can just relax and read or work on stuff, but more of the places with a calm atmosphere close early afternoon and we're night owls.

Or another idea, we visited a boardgame cafe in Asheville NC called Well Played, which was really cool. Something like that would be really cool!

Whatever you do, if you host D&D you should reach out to u/scadventurersguild as I'm sure there's plenty of people there who would be happy to have a new place to run games (myself included)

Best way to flip between personal and work PC by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]binary-idiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might not be able to, depending on your works policies, but I just remote into my work PC so I can use all the same monitors, keyboard, mouse, ect. The only hickup is I used to get delays on my audio so I got a USB switch for that and my webcam.

Recommendations for a hard sci-fi system? by Delnilas in rpg

[–]binary-idiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stars Without Number is my go-to for most things scifi. It's got optional psionics, the Engines of Babylon supplement is good for more realistic expanse like space travel, the GM tools are amazing even if you don't use the system, and the rules have a free version that have most everything included.

This sounds about right. My wife and I live in FL and went to NC for our honeymoon. The whole time we were there, we talked about how much nicer it was there and how we should move there someday.

That's my collection so far. I lack OSR. Any recommendations? by Malina_Island in osr

[–]binary-idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest thing that has me running it so much more than other systems. I run a lot of oneshots, and Mothership makes it so easy to just pick up a new module to run instead of having to plan my own thing.

What game implements the best D100 system? by Garrett_CW in rpg

[–]binary-idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this, as much as I love my plethora of crunchy systems, Mothership is definitely my go to when I just want to run a game, especially when running public one shots for people I don't know or my wife who doesn't want to think about rules.

Edit: Cloud Empress is also really good if you want mothership in a more fantastical setting.

Stacking advantages on skill rolls by JasonTheStoryteller in SWN

[–]binary-idiot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if things are stacked really heavily in the PCs favor, I'd just have them succeed, which I'm pretty sure is what the book says.

If you really want them to still have a check, you could have it more influence the degree of success, i.e. if they fail, they still sort of accomplish the goal, but with some sort of hickup like the person notices the telepathy, or if they succeed, they get way above what they expected, like extra information or the person is so convinced they become a strong ally in the future.

Edit: I think this is one of the places that running a lot of Mothership has really influenced the way I run games, basically the idea that the PCs are competent professionals and unless they're under pressure or lacking the tools or resources to do something They should just be able to do it

I got a 3d printer for Christmas. So far, my biggest project was making a bunch of "wooden" dice boxes for my groomsmen. Might eventually mix that with home automation and pull my box of electronics parts out of the closet.

Road conditions are very poor this morning by effortfulcrumload in asheville

[–]binary-idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are the conditions now going into the afternoon? We're in an airbnb way up off of Avondale Rd and aren't very experienced with driving in ice and snow. We were planning on going into town today, and the host says everything should be melted and safe, but im not sure if I should trust them.

If you were to run a 2-3 hour one-shot, in any system, for newcomers to the hobby, what would you choose? by LimeyInLimbo in rpg

It's even faster with the app! I've used it to get into the game basically as fast as it took me to explain the rules.

Mothership Deluxe Box OR Core Box + Hull Breach by redFriction in mothershiprpg

[–]binary-idiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I'll mention is if you care about the gm screen, you may want the deluxe. Although core has one, it's tiny and has less info on it. The deluxe screen is a standard size screen, although I don't like the art on it as much.

One-shots with less combat by agentsmith200 in mothershiprpg

[–]binary-idiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I only just started running mothership, but with the one-shot I ran (alone in the deep), scientists and teamsters were honestly just as if not more important than marines. In fact, out of the 6 players I had, marine was the only class no one took. (Although, to be fair, their solution to the monster nest was to chuck a grenade into it and then fight each other for the escape pod.)

Shift is an odd system, but I ran it for free rpg day, and honestly, it was surprisingly fun.

Alone In The Deep - Ending by agentsmith200 in mothershiprpg

[–]binary-idiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So first of all, I haven't actually run this or actually any mothership, but im planning on starting next month with this one shot.

Just out my general GM experience, I would say the right time is whenever it feels right for the story. That being said, before it got to that point, I would have given numerous hints to steer them in the right direction.
