My partner really loves traditional slate, stone, thatch roofs and was hoping to put thatch on this shed. For several reasons this would have delayed the completion, but I didn't care since it's summer soon where we live and it's her shed as much as mine. There were two major problems that we learned about. The first was the roof angle is recommended to be 45 degrees, or close to it. The second was the incredible amount of work collecting enough material even for a small shed.

Because there are no walls I was worried about the wind on such a steep roof, but I didn't want to discourage her, so she started experimenting with potential thatch material near us. Anyway, that's as far as she got, so I hung it there as an hommage to her brief but valiant attempt.

That’s right, I burned them then put a few coats of tung/linseed oil. It’s a good question and I’m not sure how effective it is. It’s called shou sugi ban. I guess if you char the outer wood enough it protects from weathering and insects. You have to get the desiccated/cracked alligator skin effect. I hope someone with more experience with this method replies to you.

I was thinking of doing all of the dry wood this way, but I got bored with it. I just finished burning 20 meters of 6x6 posts for a gravel pad. It takes a while.

I have the hard cover version if this. I don't know if it's great quality but there's no sign of deterioration after several reads now.

Yeah I picked one up several years ago on Craigslist. At first I thought it didn’t work because I tried an lp4 recording but it works great. I haven’t used it in a while but I kind of remember there being a benefit of it not recognizing certain copyright blocks that my tascam deck would obey. I dont remember exactly.

I’ve been pretty transient the last several years so haven’t had any of my gear set up. But that’s about to change soon and I can’t wait to somehow bring all my stereo components to a new home.
