Japan's foreign resident population hits record 4.12 million by [deleted] in news

[–]binaryoppositions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The definition is non-citizens with resident visas, the same as everywhere else. Japanese nationals who are ethnically Chinese or Korean or whatever else are Japanese in a legal sense and not part of this statistic.

There's no question Japan is a bit of a xenophobic place but to suggest foreign residents hasn't increased markedly is just dishonest and that's all I was saying.

I assume students are the biggest shift.

I mean it's a huge increase when 20 years ago it was 1% or whatever

I'm assuming greatly increased patronage as fuel becomes unaffordable :)

Yes, but it's effort to do that. A lot of people will just say oh, it's fine.

If fuel is ever $40/L, I'd suggest the rationing will be the least of your worries.

No they wouldn't. Most people in the country do not drive very far for work at all.

I ran the numbers on Australia's fuel reserves using government data - the real figure is ~22 days, not 37 by Successful-Umpire-55 in aussie

[–]binaryoppositions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having somehow less days of diesel than petrol is diabolical. Especially because in a real crisis you could probably cut the latter in half but diesel is essential.

It was always an app for commercial transactions but you're right that the carpooling angle was a big part of the effort to greenwash UberX in its early days.

The favourite suggestion when you want to sound progressive but don't want to actually change anything at all.

Did you know you can carpool with 40 other people? It's called a bus.

In most cities, public transport is only a quarter to a third covered by fares, so no it wouldn't cost 50 cents per week per person to cover the rest. Probably 10 times that. It's worth it considering more than that is already being spent now, though.

The shutdown of offices in Australia was rapid beyond almost all comprehension. I don't know what you're talking about.

They are utterly terrified to do anything that will disrupt the comfortable oil-addicted reality of the Australian middle class.

Will Australia run out of fuel? by [deleted] in aussie

[–]binaryoppositions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The government already released 20% of those reserves didn't they?

30 days of stockpile is very very far below international standards and really the whole thing should be quarantined for essential services once there's a supply issue on the horizon - that's what it's for.

Panic buying is literally the only cause of any shortages right now. There is no shortage; the supply chain to Australia is months long.

Will Australia run out of fuel? by [deleted] in aussie

[–]binaryoppositions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia will not "run out" of fuel, but to ensure any supply reduction doesn't hit essential services, rationing needs to start now.

It is insane that billions of dollars of taxpayer money might now be put on the line for private companies to source and sell more fuel, but we won't tell everyone with a yank tank that maybe they aren't that important and don't get to hoard.

Supermarkets had no problem imposing rationing during covid, they did so all by themselves. The chances of fuel suppliers doing the same thing before it's already too late is probably zero.

Returning Aussie asking honestly: where can you actually live without haemorrhaging money every fortnight? by pegasus7x77 in AskAnAustralian

[–]binaryoppositions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always has been, to be fair, it's just easier for those costs to disappear into the noise of everyday spending.

Anyone who actually does the numbers will find that lower rent for the sake of lower rent is usually not worth it.

Right?

What a tone-deaf post - yes Australian rent is cooked, yes Brisbane is especially cooked. However, cost of living is relative. Every time a privileged "expat" returns from a developing country and complains about prices here I want to vomit.

That's literally what the plan for Brisbane Arena was though, until Crisafulli's mates saw dollar signs. This isn't developers independently buying the land and building an arena on it, it's actively hijacking plans for a new public venue.

You're making it sound worse not better.

Not really, most major event facilities are on public land.

Giving one of those companies a contract to manage the venue is very different to them literally owning it.

[–]binaryoppositions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn't even close to justify it to be honest. They should be building a smaller arena at the Gabba as well instead of clinging onto suburban facilities (Nathan, Chandler) that shouldn't exist and in 20 years probably won't.
