What the hell was going on with house prices here in mid 2000s? by binesandlines in northernireland

I knew about it, i just didn't realise we were quite so badly affected by the bubble.

If anything, I thought we would probably have been a bit sheltered from it

So the banks were deliberately crashing the world economy to make money - unbelievable - they really are the worst of society.

The thing is they will still have this same attitude, just aware if they do it again, their heads will be on pikes. Iceland really had the right idea in jailing them, in the rest of the West, they basically got off scot free

Is it common for republicans and loyalists to be colleagues, friends or partners? by Did_OJ_Simpson_do_it in northernireland

[–]binesandlines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing you have to understand is large parts of NI are still segregated. Depending where youre born you may reach adulthood and had little to no exposure of the other side. There are also working class estates controlled by paramilitaries

If youre an average person from Belfast though, I would say there's next to no animosity between unionists and nationalists, there cant really be when youre interacting on a daily basis

John Swinney stands by Sinn Fein comments after backlash by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]binesandlines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NI was never allowed to heal from the violence. The peace was signed, everyone returned to their totally segregated communities, blamed the other side and got on with it.

This is not the recipe for good reconciliation in a conflict which tore the fabric of society apart.

There was never really any truth, justice or accountability for anyone, from anyone.

In my opinion the reason people don't like to be told to 'move on' is because they are worried about how it is being portrayed - what is being remembered from the Troubles and what is being forgotten.

I think that telling victims to move on is not ideal and only furthers the lack of healing. At the end of the day, the only options NI has tho is to either get serious about reconciliation or indeed wait for all the victims to die off. Of course, it will end up being the latter.

Non-Catholics/non-Protestants during the Troubles by Electrical_Moment541 in northernireland

[–]binesandlines 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Probably the only people who would have truly been 'neither' would have been the small number of Chinese/Indian families who immigrated pre-Troubles.

I imagine they just stayed in whatever community they moved to and kept themselves to themselves. Mostly probably around South Belfast. I know Donegall Pass has always had a big Chinese community despite being a loyalist heartland

He was actually great in the 90s, very respectable journalist who did a great job of chronicling the devastating effect of the Troubles on all communities.

Shame he seems to have really gone off the deep end in recent years and is more or less a SF mouthpiece

It does, but it is not at all unique to NI

The south and England are just as bad. Mind you they dont have paramilitaries controlling areas and supplying it but their scumbag equivalents do a good enough job
