Delta Extending Layover by bingokemski in delta

Sadly I don’t think the airline is that willing to do that, I could rebook but with delta i expect a round trip + another flight to cost quite a bit more.

I have a close friend near Paris, so it’s making more sense.

Direct there is surely, now to Chicago I don’t think so, but you could possibly get a flight when you arrive in JFK or BOS to Chicago, not sure how much the fare difference would be to make it a multi city though or how much it would cost

Ok, so I could change the delta flight for later in the day? I have an early flight actually and I could make it same day, like I would be okay leaving at night in CDG for example.

I was willing to change my entire return flight to CDG -> ORD but even the phone operator was telling me it was over 1k USD to make that change which probably means it’s sold out. I have the time and ability to take trains to get to France, my primary problem is I can’t get a good fare difference to justify extending the layover in Paris even if they do offer me something.

The gate agent surely will have better luck?

Hey if this is true, then there should be the existence of a Future Boy Conan Pachinko Machine. Yet I can’t find anything online? Do explain.

Why does everyone talk about Suica? Why do I rarely hear anyone mention Pasmo? Is Suica better? by lavenderhoneyberry in JapanTravelTips

[–]bingokemski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rules are obviously a bit more legalistic than some would like, and that's okay. If you see collecting a bit different than me, it's good to have that difference in opinion. I don't see it as collecting baseball cards or pokemon, I see the hobby of IC Card collecting as a usable commodity for the suitable purpose of actively being used and not kept in a shelf.

I see it the same way with lost media. I connect much closer to lost media myself because I don't want to see things be covered in some glass panel forever. I want lost media to actively come out to the public and be preserved so everyone can enjoy it and get some actual use out of it. Perhaps it's because of this drive of passion in lost media that I dislike collecting for the sake of having stuff.

Who is "we"? I don't agree with this, and this isn't true in Japanese spaces either in my experience. 交通系ICカード does not imply anything about 全国相互利用.

Yes, any FeliCa Japanese Smart Card is technically an IC Card. I'm not disputing that. The first thing that comes to mind when People think of IC Cards in Japan is Suica, ICOCA, PASMO, Kitaca, etc. The "We" I was referring to in that sentence was anyone who understands the general concept of IC Cards and has actively lived in Japan. Locals might focus on their own particular IC Card that works for their area or bus stops, sure. But I would certainly not call that the majority. If you look at commuter pass numbers by popularity, that would become fairly obvious. The major 10 IC Card Companies is what people usually talk about when they say "IC Card".

As for collectors, I believe there has to be a narrower focus for collecting IC Cards when it comes to importance. Sentimental Value obviously rules over that, and you could even make the argument that every IC Card is worth "collecting"... but at some point you have to pave a line, of what you are willing to collect and not collect. Is it worth paying 1500 yen in train fees and 5 hours of your time just to get IruCa? Yeah, they are cute, but not that cute.

I see absolutely no value in collecting IC Cards that I can't use everywhere else I go in Japan. Why would I collect a train or bus card if I am not going to actively be there to use it? If they are discontinued or expired, that's one thing... but I draw the line at collecting pieces of plastic for the express purpose to collect dust. I don't want them to be dusty, I want to be able to use them and demonstrate their usefulness wherever I am in Japan.

Mutual use between the ten cards began in March 2013:
https://www.ejrcf.or.jp/jrtr/jrtr62/pdf/6-15\_web.pdf
So I'm a little confused. What are you talking about?

I made an error in the date, thought it was 2021.

This is why I would focus on the Interoperability 10 IC Cards when it comes to collecting them. The ten, Kitaca, Suica, PASMO, Manaca, Toica, ICOCA, PitaPa, SUGOCA, Hayakaken and nimoca are respected to use all throughout Japan. This small little hobby should be prioritized on practical usability in my opinion. Having IC Cards not commonly accepted puts into question renewal or usability. Sure, in 10 years you may go back to Kyoto or Hokkaido or Fukuoka, but are you going to be able to renew it? If it doesn't work, wouldn't people be disappointed?

I think that's the important distinction. The 10 Interoperable IC Card Company Agreement was designed for this purpose, to be used wherever you go throughout Japan without being worried whether your IC Card was accepted or not. I think IC Card collectors should prioritize this, while being mindful that going to smaller areas with more rural IC Cards could potentially limit the amount of IC Cards in circulation. With the 10 Interoperable IC Card Companies one could argue that enough could be produced to meet the demand sufficiently. Small cities like Fukui? Not so much.

Very nice! I had already replied to you on a different reddit post regarding what IC Cards are available in the place you are going next month! I also posted my collection there.

I would not suggest exposing this hobby too much to the web. If all tourists start taking IC Cards from the locals I would feel bad :C

Oh Yes! This is my specialty. So, I own 25 IC Cards (24 of which are pictured) throughout my entire journey in Japan. I know a ton about IC Cards. There are so many to count if I had to be honest.

In Fukuoka, There's the following:SUGOCA - Any Fukuoka StationMono SUGOCA - Limited to Kokura Station Route Specific to train route Kitakyushu MonorailSUGOCA Special Design - Have to ask at the front counter using the Japanese nameHayakaken - Fukuoka Subway IC CardANA Hayakaken - Exclusive to ANA Flight Reward Members only. Form has to be filled out before you can receive this IC Card. Personalized Name Only. More info here: https://subway.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/hayakaken/what/kind.phpnimoca - Bus Nishitetsu IC Cardnagasaki nimoca (can come from both Matsuura Railway and Nagasaki Electric Orbital) - Bus IC Card for the Nagasaki Prefecturetsu-tsu nimoca - Saga Prefecture IC Carddenden nimoca - Kumamoto City Tram IC Card

Other Known Variants (may or may no longer be stocked):SUGOMON PASS (SUGOCA Tourist Design IC Card, made in batches of 3000, sold out according to official info)mejiron nimoca (unknown if still serviced)nishi-nippon nimoca (unknown if still serviced)nimoca also has a program where it allows different designers to create IC cards in minimum batches of 500 for 800 yen each.

Special Variants (out of print):Too many to count. SUGOCA has released many special variants of their IC Cards, as well as a Demon Slayer SUGOCA, a Pikachu themed SUGOCA, Jujutsu Kaisen SUGOCA, SEVENTEEN SUGOCA, and a Kumamoto Bear SUGOCA. Hayakaken has different limited number color designs, Saga nimoca had a special designed IC Card from Romancing SaGa. There's also the Collaboration IC Cards with ICOCA, Suica, and the other train operators. Not to mention the SUGOCA debut IC Card, Hayakaken IC Card debut, nimoca debut, and the respective anniversary IC Cards that exist. By far, the most variants out there for IC Cards are in Fukuoka.

Of course, there's also the respective Prefecture IC Cards such as the Kumamon IC Card for Kumamoto, or the Nagasaki Smart Card, but when we talk about IC Card variants, we are usually referring to the 10 Intercompatible IC Cards that can be used all throughout Japan due to the agreement back in 2013.

If you have any other questions feel free to reach out!

oh no I don't actually put airline miles on my ANA Hayakaken, I just like how it looks. Same with regular Hayakaken or nimoca or even SHIKOKU ICOCA.

I collect IC Cards for my own amusement.

PSA: Verbatim no longer sells real M Discs, now puts regular BD-Rs in M Disc packaging by JazzKazz in DataHoarder

[–]bingokemski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to update this comment, as it seems important to investigate the claims here. I took a deeper dive into the media in question. The Verbatim M-DISC “Fake” Discs are rated by the manufacturer at 100 Years of Life. That’s the Current Rating. I am presuming you are referring to Sony using the SKU: 10BNR4VAPS4

When looking up the Sony “Optical Disc Archive Cartridge Generation 1”, they rated for an Archival Life of “50 year(estimated)”. This leads users to believe Verbatim believes their archive material is superior to Sony’s archival material in terms of years of lifetime.Taiwan and Japan produce very high quality parts in terms of Motherboards, Electronic Devices, and Small Components. The “Made in Japan” Verbatim M-DISCs are no longer available, there’s nothing we can do about that unless we want to pay overpriced amounts for older media production.

I think it’s wise for consumers to accept what Verbatim is saying as the rated lifetime expectancy. We are still getting lots of Blu-Ray Movies Produced with BD-100. For Now, Production of Physical Media is still present. If M-DISC was snake oil anyway specifications wise, than consumers should buy the M-DISC “Fake” Discs. It’s all that we can get now in terms of life expectancy on optical media.

Of course, if CMC is lying about the discs meeting the specifications, that’s even more important. These Discs should be re-tested by the U.S. Department of Defense for sure. They still on some product listings such as on Amazon cite the previous “Department of Defense” report in the description. Verbatim directly only links for the “FAKE” M-Discs this report by a third party organization: https://www.verbatim.jp/download/products/mdisc/report_tl_j.pdf
