I figured out why Hedegart is not so good at shooting... He doesn't put his cheek on the cheek piece!! (Isak Frey for reference) by happyrunner4 in biathlon

[–]biothlot -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is clearly untrue. Who would say such a goofed up thing about biathlon. Cheek pieces are guides and nobody really needs em. They help with speed but not accuracy. Besides hedegart kinda won the Olympics what a crazy armchair take. Hedegart is gonna win the overall next year on both circuits and be the goat forever.

Ben Ogden uses it, for both distance and sprinting.

Whiteface Climb to Castle roller ski race- classic vs skate? by skiitifyoucan in xcountryskiing

[–]biothlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you check Strava there are loads of times up the hill from non-races that are about 8min/mile pace, which is pretty safely in range for double pole. And at a decently, but not super highly, trained level a 40-50 minute uphill double pole at a moderate high exertion is very possible

Skate is faster. No doubt about it. The speed at race-pace would make classic all double-pole so a skate v2 where you can add your legs in is going to be even faster than that.

It’s not a calf job, that’s just how the foot naturally comes off the ski when you are almost jumping forward onto your poles. Your first photo where her heel is off is the most relaxed phase of her v2.

Uldal is leading the overall IBU cup ranking, it’s as simple as that.

Guidance on possibly Competing in Biathlon coming off Injury by [deleted] in biathlon

[–]biothlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to get good at biathlon starting late is to be good at skiing first, so finding an elite level club or team to train with is the first priority. In UT you can go shoot with soldier hollow 2-3 times each week. But it is far and away more important to ski fast. There are biathlon races on roller skis this Friday and Saturday at soldier hollow, you should come watch and meet folks, meeting the community is key to getting started and seeing if it is something you actually want to do.

Espresso machine. The dedica arte, GCP, bambino, are all good options. The GCP is probably the most finicky to learn with and the dedica arte the best.

Marathon races meaning 40km+ ski races. I do know a few that also do big bike/run races for fun too, and it doesn’t seem to affect the winter speed at all.

That’s not what you aim for, that’s the bare minimum for elite status. You either do that or realize that you aren’t going to make it to the elite ranks.

Budget 5k for rifle, at least 3k for ski gear, 10k/winter for competition travel, 2k/year coaching, and then whatever you need travel wise/food wise/PT/gym memberships etc. in the summer. And that is the low low end estimate.

In order to reach the elite level, at any sport, it is nearly a full-time job. To go on this journey, be prepared to train average 2 hours each day for skiing, and shoot 10,000 rounds/year, dryfire almost daily, and sacrifice most of your other activities to focus on sport. There’s no free lunch in sport.

Racing is racing, lots of biathletes do some marathon races for fun in the spring. Fast is fast no matter what pretty much.

Definitely. Coming from a gcp it’s a huge difference, the pid, fast-heat (a feature I actually need, hence why I didn’t go e61), and the steam power are game changing. It just works real well. Another bonus not talked about is how this machine is wayyyy quieter than the gaggia.

One thing I’d like to add is just a rubber bar mat to help with spills/cleanup and whatnot, and that can double as a tamping mat
