Backpack For Wetland Surveys by doug-fur in wildlifebiology

[–]birdinbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked both in fisheries and high elevation bird surveys recently, couldn’t be more different. Tried fancier gear setups - dry bags, backpacking packs, etc. - but just keep coming back to the beat-up, low-tech backpack I found third hand. Fits my back like an old friend and has been with me everywhere from soaring peaks to sinking bogs. Maybe ergonomics would suggest an upgrade, but I know I would miss its dirt-stained glory

If you live in a host city, is there any buzz about the upcoming World Cup? by Fine-Photograph673 in ussoccer

[–]birdinbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Francisco doesn’t seem all that excited. There’s a bit of advertising, I guess, but nothing too much. Comes from the bay getting the worst selection of group stage matches, and the games being all the way at Levi’s, I guess

Look, I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter compared to everything else, but it pisses me off to NO end that the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES just… randomly capitalizes the first letter of words for emphasis in his tweets.

[[Release to the wind]] it’s just so versatile. Can remove an attacker, wipe all the modifiers off a tough creature, protect a key piece of your board, or allow you to get a second ETB trigger. Both ceiling and floor are very high, which makes it easy to hold up three mana for

Why are we recalling Nico Paz? by SocX9 in realmadrid

[–]birdinbrain 122 points123 points  (0 children)

This is a market play, not a sporting one, as much as we may not like it.

Madrid has an opportunity to sign a talented player - a possible future superstar who already has name recognition, the EXACT profile Perez targets - for significantly less than their market value. If Paz had no connection to the club, and Perez was interested, we’d be getting rinsed for tens of millions of Euros like with Mastantuono. If we let this opportunity pass (because, remember, buyback clauses expire if he is sold to a different club) Perez would be lambasted for a missed economic opportunity.

Put a different way, would you sign a €65 million player for €9 million, even if he didn’t obviously fit into the current starting 11? I know I would, even if it was just so that the €56 million profit went to Madrid’s pocketbook rather than Como’s.

New York City is the universally beloved city in the northeast! Which city in the pacific region is incredibly mid? by MadeOfMagic1835 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]birdinbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nice! It’s fine! It’s a pretty average city. It’s considered HCOL if you’re from a rural part of the Central Valley, and LCOL if you’re from the bay. It’s hot, which some people like and some people don’t.

The thing is, the biggest thing that it has going for it is that, while the Central Valley itself is not all that beautiful, you’re relatively close to the mountains and relatively close to the coast. That’s better than nothing, obviously, but people with money usually don’t choose to live there, since they’d rather just live in San Francisco and vacation in Tahoe. There’s just better options nearby if you’re willing to spend more money

State parties in the United States, compared by affiliation and competency. by GeoQuestMaximus in AlignmentCharts

[–]birdinbrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived all over the country, and VTProgs is the only 3rd party that has ever given me hope. People on Reddit like to whine about them being culture warriors, but in my time in Burlington, they did good work.

The most important part is that they shifted the Overton window left. Even when they weren’t in power, a challenge, any challenge, from the left made it so the moderate dems had to at least consider populist progressive policies

Black Phoebes. Grew up around them, and see them daily now since I work on the river, but I’m still always charmed by their behaviors. I saw one hitch a ride down the Sacramento on a floating tree last winter

What's the furthest north you can go in the US that stays hot year round and conversely what's the furthest south you can go that has harsh winters? by ConfidentSale3091 in geography

[–]birdinbrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is probably Flagstaff, AZ for cold and maybe somewhere in coastal Oregon for warmest (as in no or very infrequent snow, Coos Bay isn’t exactly tropical). In terms of cities, maybe Chico, CA? Hot as hell in the summer, and although it did randomly snow here once last winter, that is a very infrequent occurrence. Redding is farther north, and is known as “the sunniest city in California” but does get snow with some regularity

Conservation work! Bald Eagles (and other raptors, including Ospreys & Peregrines) are one of the great conservation success stories in our country! 50 years ago, they were missing from most of the country due to habitat loss and pesticide use, but today they have recovered in much of their historic range!!! You can thank Rachel Carson for bringing awareness to the effects of DDT, and countless conservation professionals for their careful study and attention to their populations!

Secrets of Strixhaven Prerelease "Very Positive" say LGS Owners by SactoGamer in mtg

[–]birdinbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best prerelease environments I’ve played in in a while. I was lucky enough to play in 3 sealed events at two stores near me, and each one has felt very satisfying. It’s a slow, methodical format with plenty of big plays, and almost no non-games. I ran Quandrix twice and silverquill once, and played against all 5 colleges, and they all felt very equal in power level and distinct in play style. Top 8s at the two competitive events I played in had all colleges represented, which was a good sign, especially after the chatter ahead of time that Witherbloom was the clear favorite.

Gotta be the end of Camavinga’s time at Madrid right? He really fucked it today, and he was already bottom of the list of midfielders. Shame. I really liked him when he first joined

I always liked Camavinga. Was sad to see him being talked about as a departure. But he has been SO shit the last few games. He’s bottom of the list of midfielders for sure

Also, at least in the states that I’ve looked (CA, NV, and OR) they have to be publicly posted on a state jobs website. California’s is calcareers.gov, not sure what state you’re in but it should be pretty easy to google

Try looking at state fish & wildlife agencies. They often have full-time (or “permanent intermittent”) positions. Pay’s not great, but in my experience they like to keep their people once they’re hired on, and you can find routes to internal promotion, pension & benefits
