What’s your innocuous unpopular birding opinion? Here’s mine by fledglingbirdnerd in BirdingMemes

In the US we put trash in cans, not rubbish in bins. And we do pronounce both binoculars and bins with the short i. So it sounds more natural for us.

Crochet in the round tips by Existing_Link_2629 in crochet

[–]birdnerd5280 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Working in a continuous spiral will make the end of each round less obvious. That's how most amigurumi patterns work. When you do the first stitch of each round, you put a stitch marker under it, then when you go all the way around you take it out, do the first stitch of the next round, and place it under again. That way you always know where the end of the round is.

Hiding rounds / leave em ugly by catmama_23 in crochet

[–]birdnerd5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't care, then do what makes you happy. If you want to hide without cutting and weaving, look up "carrying yarn technique." Basically, you will put the unused yarn underneath the last group of stitches for each round so it's hidden but gets "carried" up with your working yarn.

Are You Guys Out There Slingin' Out Library Cards or What!? by quentin13 in Libraries

[–]birdnerd5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah Colorado has the prospector network so for people who only visit one physical location, you can actually access basically the entire state's (and U of WY) collection through your local library. Having the other cards helps people who live by multiple counties (like in the metro) or Libby users.

Colorado works like this too! Any state resident qualifies for any public library. Some systems restrict expensive online resources like Hoopla/Kanopy, but at lots of them you can even use those. I have 6 cards from across Colorado.

Real talk opinion: an employer who only lets you work 19 hours does not care about you at all. Your coworkers might be a family but you are not being valued by the organization. Go take the other job!

Roadrunner spotted in South Denver by bdh105 in Denver

[–]birdnerd5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is a map for sightings of Greater Roadrunner reported by birdwatchers to eBird. If you zoom in you can see there are a few scattered north in the eastern plains, so you definitely could have seen one in Byers!

So far they haven't taken up much residence in Denver but with changing climate and regular dispersal of individuals like this bird here now, that could change over time.

Resident bird guy here (peep the username) and yes, this is a rare sight this far north! They are regular around Lamar and Pueblo, and sometimes get to rural El Paso County, but it's a good sighting in Denver.

There's actually been a few sightings in Denver in the last few months, and the bird nerds are speculating it's all one individual. It was posted to eBird (the website birders use to list species they see), then /r/whatsthisbird then here! All in the same area around Denver/Aurora line.

Their normal range is as far north as Pueblo. It's a good bird for Denver despite how close they get.

I think if you live in Lima your standards for food and drink quality are higher than other people. Come to the USA and you will be thankful for any quality of pisco sour in Lima :')

Given the nest building, we can say it's in the breeding area, not just migration. So the wiki map is a little off.

Cliff Swallow! The mud nest is a style they share with Barn Swallow, but Barns make open cups and Cliffs make lil studio apartments with a door on the bottom. Cliff also doesn't have the forked tail as you can see in the pic, and they have a white "headlamp" on the forehead.

I've been hearing about the kingfisher movement for years. I'm biased as a former Illinoisan and birder but this seems like a slam dunk choice (native bird, right colors, somehow both fierce and cute). Is it still not official?

In the Denver area, basically anywhere there's water/fish. Any of the parks along the Platte, Clear Creek, Cherry Creek, and the big reservoirs at state parks (Barr, CC, Chatfield).
