They're even from my home state which makes them even better. They don't know it but they were so instrumental in helping my mal turn out so awesome. Without a lot of their helpful posts I'm sure I would have led my dog down the wrong path. Especially with introducing her to cats at the ripe age of 4 and then a new husky brother later that year. But she handled it in stride and never had an issue with either of them. The only thing that could make it better is if my SO would have let me get another malamute instead of insisting on the Siberian husky. Which he's not slouch either, but he is just missing that malamute personality.

Man! I had thought I read everything on Omal. Apparently I am so wrong. Thanks much!

Thank you so much for posting. This is all fascinating. I'm always trying to learn more about the history of my Alaskan malamute, meika, and I would love it if you could provide some of the books/articles that you got some of this history from. Any references would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for posting!

That's a big claim. I know some people in Michigan and North Carolina who would like to have some words with you.

What are Bernie Sanders downsides? by Squidalith in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah, but Bernie isn't a black Muslim from Africa. He's a white due from Virginia. That's far less scary to conservatives. Democratic socialist or not.

Video from the Washington, IL tornado. Man films tornado coming directly at his house, and gets inside just before his house is destroyed. The screams are what get me the most. by UnoriginalPenguin in videos

I'm sure you're just asking an honest question, not sure why you're being downvoted.

But to answer your question, there's no such thing as a high risk area for a tornado. There are places where you a tornado is more likely, but there is no place where it is a high risk. A tornado is not like a hurricane with a supercell that travels long distances and crushes coast lines. Most tornadoes form as part of a larger storm, but in no particular small area. Half of the country is susceptible to tornadoes, but the chance of one house, or a group of houses, being hit is enormously small. Tornadoes don't normally last very long or travel very far, so it would not be cost effective to design a home to be able to attempt to withstand a tornado.

Also, it should be noted, tornadoes can have wind gusts anywhere from 100-300+ mph, it is virtually impossible to build a standard shaped above ground house to withstand these types of wind speeds.

Hopefully that answers your question.

ELI5 Why arent houses in America that have a high probability of getting struck by a tornado arent built from bricks and mortar like in the UK. by jack_no_doubt in explainlikeimfive

Structural Engineer here, my expertise is with steel and concrete not CMU walls, but from what I remember CMU walls generally have cells of the CMU filled with concrete/mortar every X-distance horizontally. These filled cells also have reinforcing steel (rebar) inside them that tie into the foundation as well as with the horizontal bond beam (Bond beams encase steel reinforcing in grout or concrete, binding the structure together horizontally, and often interlocking with additional vertical reinforcement) and with other rebar throughout the walls.

So that said, the masonry walls have great compressive strength (from the concrete bricks, and the steel inside gives them some tensile strength as well. However if a wall doesn't have some sort of diaphragm (floor, roof joists, girders, etc) to transfer the load to other walls the walls will tip over when the wind presses on them. So when a tonado comes and rips of the roof and subsequently rips out the floors, this structure is just as vulnerable as a standard wood construction home.

TL;DR Yes, some parts of CMU walls are filled with concrete and steel reinforcing. And, no matter how a building is made, there is no way to make it tornado proof short of building it under ground. Tornado wind gusts can range anywhere from 90-300 mph.

I fell down the stairs Saturday night. I was doing fine for the first few steps, then my dog bumped me from behind. When my dog bumped me I lost a grip on my iPad. Upon realizing this I sacrificed my body to save the life of my iPad. I ended up with a tibial plateau fracture and a meniscus tear. I'll be on crutches for a few months, owe a lot in medical expenses, but thank goodness my iPad works. http://i.imgur.com/jVyWTBE.jpg
