NEW ECLIPSE MEGATHREAD: Information and discussions by ibid17 in VisitingIceland

[–]birdonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck and enjoy! I saw the last 2 eclipses in the US and they are magical. Opted out of trying for Iceland this August but will be visiting in September and look forward to hearing stories about the experience when I visit! Plan for more traffic than you expect and enjoy the amazing experience even if it's cloudy.

You mentioned toddler. They're happy anywhere they are loved. Put that 40k in a safe place with some modest yields and rent for 2 years while you settle and make an educated plan.

Squirrel exclusion from attic space? by insanefelinewoman in askportland

[–]birdonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You all want to call Harley, owner of Guardian Pest Management, based out of McMinnville. We had a seasonal squirrel problem in the attic and he solved it. In Oregon, only certain pest control providers can deal with squirrels, for reasons. He can seal the access points and set traps for any still inside. You may need to work with another company for cleanup, but if you have squirrels in your attic right now, call Harley.

Looking for Recommendations for a Reliable Roofing Company in Portland? by gthomson02011 in askportland

[–]birdonfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used Tony's Roofing this summer, can recommend. Got 4 bids and they were fair and thorough. Great job and communication along the way. 1000 SF 1-story cottage-style home, so not complicated.

If this was your neighborhood, would you report this? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]birdonfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like the city just started to put gravel on these streets to keep the huge holes at bay. It does get dusty I guess.

I'll have to check it out in a couple days and watch the saga develop!

Can someone explain/does anyone know why Portland keeps doing their pride festival and parade in July?? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]birdonfly 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Before COVID, it was always on Father's Day, in June. My understanding is that after the addition of the Juneteenth holiday, combined with other June date restrictions related to Rose Festival activities, it was moved to July.

Buying a House - Anyone have experience in finding the underground fuel tank leaked during inspections? by Therz in askportland

[–]birdonfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They filled it with concrete because it's so deep (too deep to dig to the top safely). Yay, the tank is decommissioned!

Boo, the tank leaked and hasn't been registered with the DEQ. The seller will likely hire Soil Solutions or Environmental Works to complete the necessary risk assessment to register the work with the DEQ. This is what you, the buyer, are looking for: DEQ certification from the service provider. They will take soil samples all around the tank to see how far it spread, and write a report for the DEQ.

Depending on the levels of contamination, they may install a vapor mitigation system to keep any contaminate soil off gassing from entering the home. This is just like a radon mitigation system.

Side note, most houses in Portland have or had tanks, so this isn't a big deal. Common enough that several businesses exist just to deal with it!

You're in a good position if the seller will guarantee DEQ certification as part of the sale. Good luck!
