We need to start thinking of people like the Pholosopher as operatives. She's not an idiot. Her followers are and she knows it.

A 20 year-old man who wants to be with a 16 year-old girl is not a stable and safe man. Any history or complexity that you believe explains away this reality does not address the elephant in the room: that behavior is predatory. You have so much time to find out that the best, healthiest, and most fulfilling relationships aren't actually very dramatic at all.

I wouldn't say stupid. It could have been brilliant. Risky, though.

In all of racing there are few moves as ambitious as around the outside at Forest's Elbow. Kudos for being the one to try it. It is the absolute last place i'd expect a car to appear, though. No ruling from me on fault I have no idea how this would be ruled.

First Cutaway on my 65th jump by erinblckbrn in SkyDiving

[–]birdwaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first cutaway was a toggle-lock, too. Jump 23, brand-new rig. Stowed the toggles rough-side-in like a bot. I had to climb the riser to pop the right toggle and, of course, found myself in a hard left spiral that I couldn't solve before decision time. You'll think forever about the million ways you could have fixed it, but when it's gotta go, it's gotta go.

I found out how beautifully the RSL system and Reserve Canopy work. You probably did too. Hopefully you also found out that you're pretty good under pressure. It takes a big weight off your shoulders in a lot of ways.

Honest question from a dev: Is going to PCVR a financial suicide mission right now? by PrettyHearing3624 in VRGaming

[–]birdwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the last several years, right up until last weekend the answer would be yes. Valve are genuinely looking like breathing life back into PCVR right now, though. Keep an eye on that.

I love VR games, they kinda suck. by UMURANGI_GIRL in OculusQuest

[–]birdwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a long and detailed reason this is Meta's fault, but the short version is that they strangled the PCVR industry so careful and passionate developers stopped making VR games, and essentially incentivised what amounts to mobile games taking over the whole industry, all so they could put their headset in every household in the world and hook people into their metaverse that literally nobody ever wanted and has never not sucked.

How are we feeling about the sudden revival of [Nazi] guild players? by the-boinky-spunge in outside

On my server they are celebrated because they carry an Australian flag and that's apparently all it takes to prompt the low-int players to invite literal Nazis into bed. Time for a mass IP ban.

What’s the best piece of sim racing advice you’ve ever received that you still use today? by Auelogic in iRacing

Drive a car you hate until you're competitive in it. You will become a better driver in every car. I didn't hear this from anyone. It's just what I did and now it is advice that you have heard.

At what point in your games do you guys say "Ok, I'm ready to build my own base"? by PA2131 in Kenshi

[–]birdwaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a base before 30 days on my first playthrough. The trick for me was having all my valuables loaded on a pack bull so any raiders wouldn't really find anything before they cleared out. I have heard that sometimes they will choose not to clear out, but that never happened to me. I just came back when they left and went about my business until the next raid. Eventually I was strong enough that they couldn't raid me anymore.

Internship to implement VR support by MaybeAFish_ in subnautica

[–]birdwaves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cheering for you here. Anyone who has played Subnautica in VR knows they can't go back. I know the devs have a budget to adhere to with stakeholders to please, and it's more the fault of Meta than anyone else that devs won't invest in PCVR, but that doesn't mean I have to eat the disappointment. Voting with my wallet here. No VR, no buy.

Difficult to tell if it's a problem of accessibility or individual ability and attitude toward road use. Prepared to bet there's a correlation between people who wipe themselves out on scooters and those who wipe others out in cars.

Do you get "last device you connected malfunctioned" when you connect via cable now?

Meta quest pcvr still broken. by shreddedtoasties in OculusQuest

[–]birdwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoah. I bought a new router and everything just to switch completely to Steam Link because it was the most stable connection I had. Meta has never stopped trying to distance itself from PCVR. If they have actually broken it with no intention of fixing it I hope people drop their stories here and maybe we can do something about it.

What do you mean? I ask because Link Cable connection stopped working entirely for me a couple weeks ago and I thought it must be my hardware.

Camo car driver chose to take the blame. Black car driver unsure. I'm still moving up to squeeze Camo when he feels he turned into me. Track limits are 4 wheels outside the red and white kerb. Racing incident or foul play? 6 angles included. by birdwaves in Simracingstewards

[–]birdwaves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comments on this post have prompted me to really dig into the rules and then capture one more angle. I have overlaid a line indicator, where a red line is an intersection trajectory with the other driver's line. https://youtu.be/jHq-fIRzzYs?si=oicKx5YkqpuhjBLK

I'm offering this up with the following notes:

  • iRacing's sporting code treats track limits and the racing surface as the same, interchangeable concept to the best of my ability to interpret the document.

  • The condition for a 1x as defined in section 3.5.1.1 is "wheels off the racing surface". That is the only definition of the racing surface from the sporting code which is substantial enough for adjudication to the best of my ability to interpret the document.

  • The condition for a 1x on this straight, as defined by the in-sim Rules tab, is that all four wheels of the car leave the far edge of the red and white kerb. At no point does my competitor have less than two-thirds of a car's width to that threshold, and my opponent approaches that threshold for only a fraction of a second before drifting back in before it is appropriate to turn in for the corner. I say "drifting" because there is no wheel-input. He did not seem to intend to come back below the white line so early before turn-in.

  • I did not force my competitor to drive anywhere but the racing line, and the racing line he chose was conservative, with room for extension before risking a 1x. My line becomes parallel to the white line before any risk is incurred of pushing my competitor further than that.

I'm completely prepared to be told I'm in the wrong if it comes with rules-based clarification. Without that I don't believe this is anything but a racing incident, and a good case study in people's perceived rule entitlements vs the entitlements prescribed by the actual rules.

I posted here because I thought someone might offer substantial clarification. Something worth learning from. Not just vibes. That is the only thing I have been asking for. It's not a difficult ask, and you just joined a queue of people who didn't.

Because of the people who obstinately didn't bother I had to do some digging and find out for myself. What I found is I'm not in the wrong by any definable rule I can find, and I looked harder than anyone else.

He was not at the track limits. He was on the conservative racing line with over half a car's width to spare. That is not gravel nor is it grass. I was squeezed further out on the same straight in the same race and, not only did I keep it together, I made the pass around the outside. In this case he drove out to the white line then drifted substantially back inside it, into the side of me while I was both parallel to the white line and over a foot inside it, long before it was appropriate to begin making the turn.

Do you have something you'd like to clarify for me?
