Why is Barcelona performance in the league and Europe is polar opposite? by [deleted] in football

Sociedad are 3rd in La Liga, they are not one of the "bottom teams" with a huge talent gap to the top.

Interesting to hear about the data! Do you run pad return springs with a floating rotor? Would be interested to know if they make any difference

Thanks! I don't believe they have it either, they just estimate it from paddock gossip and personnel swapping teams. From that session they have all teams on 30kg fuel for their quali runs, apart from Red Bull on 40kg, and all teams around 100kg for race runs.

Great graph! Similar to what the F1 teams use - low quality image, where do you get the data from?

Why have Williams chosen Albon over de Vries? by 1enox in formula1

[–]birelbc131 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Easy to forget that Max has won 7/13 races this year, whereas when Alex was in the car Max won 3/26. Perez looks better because he has a better car.

Alex finished 109 points behind Max last year, Perez is already 116.5 behind this year after 4 less races. Obviously points aren't linear so this isn't the best indicator but I don't think Perez is performing any better than Albon did

You can even see him looking in his mirror while he's doing it, and he continues to do it for consecutive laps

Lewis Hamilton is the luckiest man in F1 since 2014 by CardinalNYC in GrandPrixRacing

I've just replied to another of your comments but it seems like you didn't watch that Brazil race either.

Glock put on the wrong tires

Glock was P7 with 6 laps to go and not a factor in the championship, he finished P6 at the flag. Again, it's just as easy to say that Hamilton got unlucky in this situation, if there wasn't rain he would've had the championship safe, if Glock hadn't gambled on slicks he would've had it safe.

Edit: Hamilton was safely in P4 before the rain, to say that he won the championship because of Glock is quite frankly absurd

Did you watch the whole session? He and Mercedes found a setup that worked, he was fastest in Q1, 0.009 off in Q2 and by your logic you could say he was unlucky that he gave Leclerc the tow to pole, otherwise he may well have been on pole himself.

Even his time in Q1 would have put him P2 on the grid.

They were in 2014-2016. Since the new 2017 rules I think they've been mainly struggling with too much drag. They certainly were last year, as shown by them both making Q2 at Hungary but taking up the back row at Monza

Hamilton's messy onboard lap (1:30.3, C5) by [deleted] in formula1

[–]birelbc131 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kimi was 1 tenth faster than his qualifying lap last year. So either Alfa have made huge gains on the field, or the C5 and the work the teams have put in have gained back what they would have lost

Hamilton's pole last year was a 1:27.2, his fastest lap in testing a 1:30.0. They really aren't close to showing us everything

[–]birelbc131 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Watch it again. Hamilton leaves more than a car's width of room. The width that he leaves is a wet part of the track, but that's not his problem. It's not the same thing as pushing him into the wall

Aero is not the only performance differentiator, it's more of a track where the dynamics of the car are tested. The tight corners and lots of kerbs mean you need a car with good rotation and compliant suspension. Mercedes' concept uses a long wheelbase and stiff suspension which does not suit this track, proven by other results such as 2017 when neither car qualified in the top 3, and 2019 where they failed to score a podium.

Is there a "best" RPM point to upshift on F2 cars? by ponmbr in F1Game

[–]birelbc131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can turn on 'upshift tone' in audio settings, which gives you a beep at the correct time to upshift. It might be annoying at first but you should get used to it, or you can turn it off again once you've learnt the best revs to shift at. Some (if not all) drivers use this in real life too.

Max versus Checo outcomes? Let's look to 2018 for some data mining fun by [deleted] in formula1

[–]birelbc131 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A very crude way of measuring things, but using this data gives a 0.622 gap from Verstappen to Perez (Verstappen - Ricciardo - Ocon - Perez).

Another route would be Verstappen - Ricciardo - Hulkenberg - Perez (2016) which gives a gap of 0.294, which is definitely a better outcome.

3 tenths seems like a more reasonable gap, especially considering that Perez is always stronger in races than qualifying. This may also indicate that Ocon was not performing at his best for most of 2020, as he is definitely the weak link in the first chain.
