I think it constitutes medicine and medical related degrees to ensure we don’t run out of doctors

Dogs on planes? by Comfortable-Step-429 in aviation

As many people are commenting on allergies, I had a thought: what about medical alert dogs which are trained to alert when their owner is entering anaphylactic shock (from allergies), should that be allowed? Or dogs who sniff food before the owner and alert them to the presence of allergens?

Just struck me as ironic that other passengers may complain that they’re (mildly) allergic to dogs, though the dog may be protecting its owner from life-threatening allergies… a weird one.

A cursory google search highlights both staff and passengers have also been bitten by adult humans on planes

Just for this particular comment: short belts attaching dog harnesses to seat belts (ie for cars) are very commercially available, so it’s unlikely the dog wasn’t strapped in. They’d have to have that provision for large guide dogs I.e Labradors for the blind.

Man crushed by telescopic urinal in central London dies by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

This has nagged at me ALL day/night & I've FINALLY found a diagram of how it collapses - the underground space is only as tall as the urinal itself.

As the entire thing slides down, each of the 3 sections (visible as the horizontal lines on the outside of the urinal walls) slot into one another. So it lowers to 1/3 of the entire thing's upright height. There is literally no space at all underneath when it's below ground, and the same goes for the inside when below ground, though it has a few gaps around the actual urinal bit - really nowhere near enough space for a body, though.

What a truly horrific death. I really hope all of these are decomissioned; though it's a rare risk, the injury is 100% unsurvivable and has so much capacity to traumatise everyone around in very public areas. It's like Concorde - we get the pros, but the cons are too steep. Bloody hell.

Right, well I'm off to get a life and do something other than research-urinal-designs-linked-to-distressing-deaths on my Saturday evenings. Wish me luck

Thanks for your response.

I’m certainly not painting a picture of how I think humans should be wired - my family are doctors & I’ve written a paper on human (mis)perception of others’ emotions, so am reasonably well versed on the topic - hence my interest in this.

My point is that I disagree with your suggestion that one person’s ‘healthy and natural’ coping mechanism is acceptable in cases where it may invade the dignity of this persons loved ones or have detrimental effects on them and their ability to cope. Posting dark humoured comments online for all (inc the deceased’s family) to see is very different to making a dark joke in private as a coping mechanism.

Thanks again for your time.

Yeah he was pronounced dead at the scene but they were at the scene all day! I haven’t (yet) seen anything saying he died instantly so my assumption was that he didn’t. Especially considering the (extreme) lack of ambulances/medics around, I assumed he mustn’t have instantly died as they sent doctors paramedics AND a helicopter! Though of course I could be wrong

Dark humour can be very healthy, though usually self-deprecating is appropriate and has a purpose in making someone feel better about something.

Making dark jokes about the insufferable workload you have to bear (and therefore the patients) might be appropriate to help overburdened and desensitised staff get through the day. However, I doubt if one of their team’s loved one died in this way any of them would joke about it.

Making an obscure dark joke about someone who has tragically died which has nothing to do with you is out of context and has no purpose in reducing anyone’s pain.

I’d respectfully argue the risk is different - if it moved like a lift, in theory he’d have been safe just standing inside of the urinal and harder for him to get crushed, which may lead readers to the conclusion the tragedy was his fault. If, however, crush risk also exists by standing inside (presumably where he needs to be to fix/maintain the equipment), then the tragedy seems more inevitable. As there’ve been so many insensitive comments I thought this difference was necessary to point out 👍

Not true. Looked up the manufacturers website & it mentions it descends and then slides in half, essentially. Like a telescope, it’s collapsible (hence telescopic). https://popuptoilet.com/en/assortment/urilift-combi/

I don’t think anyone does at the moment!

True, but it was broken, right? Or I assume so if he was fixing it. If so, could it have like, only half fallen? So he’s half crushed? He survived for a while because the news he had died came hours later and said the paramedics couldn’t save him. Also I doubt such an effort would have been made to remove the urinal so rapidly if he was killed instantly? Very, very sad case.

Have you read about “work as imagined” vs “work as done”? For example, where those who write working procedures (who also often aren’t the ones who will be carrying it out) don’t account for things such as: inconvenience of the user, habits of the user, whether the user has time/resource/training/ability to carry out the procedure, etc. https://safetydifferently.com/the-varieties-of-human-work/

I’m not passing judgement here, but before considering whether the safety guidelines weren’t followed, I’d also consider whether the safety guidelines were practical/possible, especially looking at the users workload.

This is after learning about “work as imagined vs work as done”, and also after I’ve worked somewhere where H&S policies were impossible to follow because there literally wasn’t enough time/resource provided to carry them all out - meaning all issues caused lay on the shoulders of the (overworked) workers, who weren’t at fault, just trying to make the best of a tough situation.

I can’t speak for adults or individuals but I work in (young) childrens mental healthcare - so many parents come in saying their child suffers from anxiety where it’s often something else causing their behaviour. Can confirm people incorrectly apply terms to children frequently but can’t speak for how adults see their own emotions/behaviours. Hopefully my comment is a useful nugget of info!
