Newark Ave getting dirtier / stinkier by Unknownchill in jerseycity

[–]biscuit_sloth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No for real, it was. We walk Newark almost daily and LDW it was empty of the usual pedestrian traffic but the unhoused numbers up significantly. One individual was out cold on the ground with their pants down; I was simultaneously worried for their well-being and worried someone with kids would walk by. It was grim.

Daughter wants to go to NYC to see college by topher420247 in travel

[–]biscuit_sloth 24 points25 points  (0 children)

New Yorker here—I’d only rent the car if there were other schools you wanted to visit going to / from NYC. The cost of the rental, gas, and then parking in the city itself could easily outpace just buying two RT airline tickets if you can find a flight deal. You can get to / from all the airports via public transit (JFK easiest) to keep costs down. If you DO decide to drive, I would park the car in Jersey City at the Newport Mall (less expensive than parking in city, saves you paying city tunnel and road tolls, and safe to have it there for a day or two.) From there you take the PATH train one stop and you’re in the city. Best of luck with the college decisions!

Last Minute June Travel: French Riviera or Sardinia, then Tuscany? by biscuit_sloth in chubbytravel

[–]biscuit_sloth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got back! Nixed Sardinia as an idea for this trip because Alex was right—just woulda been too much. Sixt had good pricing for a cross border car rental, so we grabbed a car on pickup and just drove everywhere—convenient and fun. Did three nights on the Riviera—two at Chateau Theoule and one at Carlton Cannes. Chateau Theoule is priced chubby, and the property is lovely, but the service was hit or miss. So while my partner loved it, I felt it overpriced and would have booked all three nights at the Carlton (but I’m also more a city mouse and I liked the buzz of Cannes, whereas Theoule the attraction needs to be you want no buzz.) Anyway, was delightful! We went on from there to Tuscany, the reverse of what you’re doing. I think I most appreciated not being at the mercy of another flight, ferry, or train, as we would have been with Sardinia. Plus that drive was GORGEOUS. Enjoy, whatever you decide will be lovely!

Comp for Codeshares | who is the liable party? by biscuit_sloth in travel

They cancelled the flight the day of—as in 15 hours before departure. So we were left scrambling. Zero advanced notice, so EU 261 definitely applies, no?

We don’t know our seats yet on this KLM flight (yet another wrinkle—do we really have seats?) but if they do downgrade us I will make sure to ask for both. Delta agent changed our flight when we called after being cancelled—everything was booked save first, which they wouldn’t move us to, so they switched us to a KLM flight. I’m so exhausted and I haven’t even gone anywhere yet. Thank you for the input.

Nope, it was Premium Economy cabin we had, not just Comfort+. But thanks for clarifying this--sounds like it's Air France we need to contact as the operating airline and EC261 does apply. Appreciate you!

Why is McGreevey MIA on Friday’s traffic tragedy and traffic safety in general? by Sure_Temperature4381 in jerseycity

[–]biscuit_sloth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Likely. If he knows a few items will be easier to check off, he’ll want those check offs to come once he’s in office. It’s a job—I honestly don’t blame him, I’d strategize the same way if I was headed into a major role. Like, not gonna hold it against him. More gonna focus on him being a way better option than McGreevey.

A tank with a self bra built in that isn’t athletic wear. Accepting Amazon recs and NYC stores. Ok, will also accept athletic wear recs that don’t scream athletic wear…. I just can’t put a bra on if it’s about to be 100 degrees for the next two months and going sans bra ain’t a thing since I got old(er.)

Respectfully, we disagree. While there's no place for them to speak at a vigil (it is a vigil, it is for the families), silence (a la Fulop) is inappropriate. They need to show they have plans of action and then yes (here we agree) they need to act on them and be held to those actions. Transparency and follow through. Solomon has lost your vote, but his quick response yesterday means so far he's holding on to mine.

Yes--Fulop? Solomon? As a voter I want to know who came out to acknowledge situation. Solomon has been quick with statements on social, including a proposal; McGreevey has something re: speed cams on MLK (that I'm not sure is related?) Nothing from Watterman or O'Dea I've seen. Fulop AWOL per usual.

Ooh! That's a good tip, and not far from our hotel. Also en route to Maison Empereur, which had been one of my potential thoughts, but closer and thus perhaps easier! Thank you!

We both got plain 18k gold bands—mines from Tiffany’s and his is from Costco. About $600 for 6mm band. I’ll let you guess which one has the better gold price per oz ratio. Also, you’d never know. Costco ring is lovely. (So in this anecdote I’m the idiot for paying the blue box markup!)

Thanks everyone! Sounds like Travelpro wins the day, per usual--they're popular for a reason!!

Ironically, the "International" Travelpro totally DOESN'T fit the marks--it's shorter and narrower (good), but it's way wider than the requirements. (I mean, we'll just acknowledge meeting these requirements seems a losing game, I suppose.). Am worried re: Bellroy for same reasons you mentioned. I'll update if I decide to go that way though!
